I have a slick-tire steel fatbike I built to handle downhill on pavement and hauling cargo, a semi-klunker grocery-getter made from a 27"x1-1/4" old 2x5 ten speed, a reynolds 531 road bike I'm slowly making as optimal a balance of aero and lightweight as you can make steel while poor, a folding bike, and a cruiser frame hanging around to be a "project". None of those are fixies, but I like Zach's content. If I lived someplace flatter I might consider one.

Really got into cycling last year, got my first fg/ss Jan 30 this year in the dead of MN winter. Needed a simple reliable winter bike. Took Zach’s advice “if you wanna try fixed just do it” (or something like that) so immediately flipped it to fixed. I’m 61 and I love it love it love it. Pushing 70 gear inches in the winter (need to be cautious) and 79 gear inches the rest of the year.

I'm both a roadie and a fixed gear rider. It's in no way mutually exclusive. I train and race pretty seriously on my road bike. My daily bike is a fixed gear. Minimal maintenance, I love the style and simplicity. And it helps my pedaling and handling on my road bike

Just catching up on your videos Zach. I tried riding fixed but being a BMX rider and eventually a mountain biker for close to 10 years, it did not really gel with me. I'm already 52 years old and I was not really comfortable with the no brakes and the fixed spinning. I'm just too late to the party and my cycling feels and habits are really cemented in. I really wanted to love riding my fixed bike but I just can't get over it and was really disappointed with myself. Our trails rides are pretty hardcore and you need skills and this simple bike was kicking my ass. Like you the riding experience is the #1 reason we ride bikes. I really love and absolutely think that the fixed gear bike is the coolest looking bike bar none. I turned my Fuji track into a single speed and put double brakes and attached bars similar to Ricky's. I enjoy riding it now but its not looking fixed. Oh well can't have it all. Impotantly, I discovered by this conversion that I really love the "urban cycling" ethos. So now I ride a vintage cro-mo steel 90's mountain bike that I converted into a city cruiser and I really love riding that bike around .

I am 61yo and ride fixed and road. Hats off to you BMX riders! I feel those are skills I will never truly acquire. I started cycling riding fixed in my 50s and it really fueled my passion for riding. Have never mastered an unending track stand or wheelies, and sometimes wear road kit for riding fixed. In sum, not sure I conform to a particular riding lifestyle, but enjoy the ride every day I can. @@codyherring3895 have you an ebike? If no an mtb and bafang mid drive could be for you. They range from 250 watt to 1000 watt. Totally depends on your skill level though which motor you get. (If you get 1) I just built one for a disabled man in his 70's. Also johnnynerdout on KZbin is a smart guy building loads of ebikes and is happy to share information. Hope this helps. Battery quality very important.

I am the only fixed gear rider here in our subdvivision. I ride and try to keep up with roadies and mtb riders who do laps around the block. It’s really challenging but it gives me that sense of achievement whenever I manage to keep up with their distance. You're a fixed gear rider, I get it. I have a 20 year old Masi fixed gear I ride quite often....... But I'm 67 years old, I never go into the drops anymore and my back is tired of bending over. I'm thinking very seriously of flipping the rear wheel and getting some risers. Single speed bikes need some love too. Nothing like a good pedal strike to make someone think seriously about the advantages of a freewheel. Love that purple bike you have with the basket and cruiser bars. I'm a 76 yo bloke, been cycling seriously for 35 years. I own a super light carbon road bicycle, Dura Ace groupset & all nice bling etc..... Recently bought a cheap & heavy single speed bike, mainly to improve my level of fitness, pushing an 11 kg solid steel "beast" has turned me around, big time. Use the single speed almost all the time. Non complex drive line, nothing to adjust or tune. KISS - keep it simple solution ! I'm now a converted cyclist. Single is sweet, the beast only cost me $300 - new.

The ratio question, being disappointed at seeing someone with a front brake ss freewheeling, cycling caps on/off the bike, and ruined pants 😅 Worn bikes are pretty cool. Get good tires. I really like the Schwalbe one for the rain, it grips more. Also weight the rear of your bike more when skidding. If you run straps, also learn foot stopping.

I try to skid the wheel, then fumble for the brake levers. Road bikes don't feel safe. Generally ride 48x19 so uphill comes easy. 48×17 is for tailwinds! 30mph feels amazing!

really dig your videos, I've watched several and have learned some shit. 52yo lifetime biker, been bombing the streets of DC since 1992, and since 2006 riding a completely stripped down track. bike to work every day, bike through the city almost every night. we would get along. anyway, couple others I thought of. when you see someone's bike, first thing you look at is the back wheel, what are they riding. if a rear derailleur, I'm done looking. then checking brakes and where. I have no problem with people who run a front brake, I probably should myself with these knees and hips. anyway, if there's one brake, I'm still warily on board. then you look at the pedals and check the cadence. you can tell pretty quick if someone is fixed or single speed. I have no brain context for single speed bikes, I just don't understand them. it's all the liabilities of a fixed gear without any of the fucking awesomeness. torpedoing through rush hour traffic on a fixed you've been riding for years is an intimate groovy dance, there is nothing like it. I guess the other one is that when you're riding and see another biker and instinctively notice there's no rear derailleur but then you see them coast... I just... I mean I don't dog on anyone that is out there biking, they're already way ahead of the pack. but if the very sight of a single speed fills you with bafflement to the point that you veer out of your path, you're fixed up

Right on! Lugged steel frames, toe clips and straps? I've been riding two bikes just like that for 35 years! The babes say I know how to spin! Steel is real! Columbus SL, SLX, still rock like they did new. Exact same frames as pictured above, except they have 6 speed freewheels, 52/42 chainrings, generous 42 mm Cinelli Campion del Mondo deep drop bars, I-A stem and single pivot rim brakes, Campy all the way. Full fendered daily driver and sport bike, pushing 100,000 miles on each. They're just wonderful bikes that'll get you to the store or the next town, no problem. Cup and cone threaded bottom brackets? Yeah! Timeless. Like fine wine, "vintage" bicycles get better with age!

I don't think I'll ever go fixed gear. But I love single speeds. So I relate to some of this. Especially the bit about people with gears cheating. I always think that in my head when they pass me. 😅

I’ve been riding my single speed more than my 10spd gravel lately, just coz it’s more fun. I did explain it to a customer as a feeling that gears are cheating, lol. I think a fixie is the clearly the next progression, much to the disgust of all the cyclists in my town
