A bit off topic, but Americans being pretty much the only people in the world who refuse to play songs in foreign languages is very sad for them. And yet we're all expected to listen and love songs in English. I grew up listening to songs in English, not understanding a word. I also remember songs from Japan, France, Italy or SK that were all huge hits in my country
@MilaTejana9 күн бұрын
What Americans are these? I've always listened to music in multiple languages and had radio stations that played no English music here in the US, even in the 90s. I think people imagine Nebraska when they think of the US.
@desmond1078 күн бұрын
@MilaTejana Well, I always got the impression that most radio stations or TV stations wouldn't just play songs in foreign languages. There are exepctions, of course. But I remember Ricky Martin, Mark Anthony and even Shakira all talking about this. How they had to make songs in English or feature American artists if they wanted to be played in the US, even though they were massive superstars everywhere else. BTS had to change their whole sound too, to make their music 'US radios friendly' and their most succesul songs (in the US) are their English releases,, even though they're by far their worst songs. Tatu were massive in Europe and Asia, with their songs being in Russian, but then they had to make English versions for America. I always see people say it's normal, because they need to understand the lyrics "to relate" but the rest of the world was always expected to consume English content we didn't understand. Again, I'm sure there are exepctions, but this is the impression I got. It goes for movies too. So many American movies are remakes of foreign films that are still too new to need a remake
@MilaTejana8 күн бұрын
@desmond107 Yes, I'm from Texas, where nearly half the population listens to music in Spanish so it's not that they are listening to music they can't understand. And we had a radio station in Hindi but, again, for the people who understand it. I think the US and Latin America are very different than Europe in that the amount of media that we can consume in English and Spanish makes us very accustomed to doing so. Still, I grew listening to music in mostly English and Spanish but also Urdu, Turkish, Arabic and many other languages but I was raised in a very multicultural community. The US has a lot of diversity, so I get defensive when I feel like everything is erased but a 5th generation American of European descent. My family has been here longer than that and yet I speak a second language, also studied a third but I'm not very good lol, and enjoy media from all over the world. I was shocked when I was Italy that I heard so much music in English and Spanish. I was like, where is the Italian pop music being played in restaurants or train stations? I found that strange. In summary, sorry for my terse reply and thanks for the convo. I do agree that we like to understand lyrics.

Also, Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony are both American to give an example of our diversity.

I started learning italian when i saw Maneskin in London in 2019 for the first time and I immediately fell in love with this language that I've only seen mocked by american comedians. So i started translating the lyrics and I discovered a universe. It's clear Damiano has americanize himself, he changed a lot (also his mannerism) and i'm not saying that it isn't normal because growing is changing. He said that it's easy for him to write in english cause it's not his first language and he feels less judged, maybe now he has this need, he wants simple things, simple lyrics, he wanna dance and be carefree, and it's ok, but i hope some day he'll get back to his beautiful mother language cause those songs are really in another league. (yes Zach, people consume english music all day, so why can't americans also open up a little more to the world?)

Also on maneskin they have always had english songs so why is this such a big deal now. They said, him,, vic, thomas that its a break and they will go back - so why all this drama? And more importantly, why is he the only one being sabotaged and bashed for doing the exact same things as the others? From the start he was a star and that was evident since xfactor, but he always was a team player, pushed the others to the front with 0 ego. How many others frontman do that? So to see how same fans bash him on every interview/post, demonise him is sad and not fair. I wonder how it will be for him when he will go back to the band and see those people who bashed him, all of a sudden will worship him again. Ever since he went solo, I hear nothing but him whining about how miserable he felt in the band, not being his true self etc. Who is advising this lad? This was so unnecessary. He's lost a great deal of MA fans because of that. Nothing wrong with exploring new paths, but management-wise it was a total disaster. Sadly, there is also some fatigue to his voice and looks recently. Cigarettes addiction messing him up maybe? I assume he's intelligent enough to know he needs to take care of his vocal cords. I love all his Italian songs, they have depth to them. When comparing Vent'anni, Il dono della vita or Duemilaminuti to 'if i was a cactus you would be a balloon' I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry.
