That seems like a massive oversight on Toyotas part. I mean pumping your brake is something that should not stop your brakes from working in any situation especially when your accelerator is stuck wide open. How scary.

Even if. There as a handbrake which is an different systen (for safety) and both automatic and manuals can be put into neutral. Putting an transmission into neutral disconnects the engine from the wheels. Meaning its basicly as if your accelerator is no longer stuck and the car will decelerate

The big lesson here is the old proverb " what you fear shall come upon you ". Immediately spirit of fear came over everyone in the car and they automatically made the assumption that they were all going to crash, it's called Target fixation and they could not get their Thinking Out of the Box. All the driver had to do, or even the passenger, was to turn the ignition key off. I'm still astonished at all these hundreds of comments pouring in that 99% of them are not thinking about this. I think it needs to be a part of public education so it's ingrained in people's minds that if anything like this happens, turn the damn key off, with all due respect

For those wondering why you would lose power assist brakes at full throttle. The majority of power assist brake systems use vacuum from the engine. At cruise and light throttle you have vacuum that is stored in the booster, but once they used their brakes and use all the vacuum in the booster and now that’s it’s at full throttle there is no vacuum anymore. This does not happen with vehicles equipped with hydro boost or electronic hydro boost systems that use power steering fluid pressure to assist the brakes

@@ShamrockUSA kind of correct, but you didn’t get to the essence. The condition is high rpm no throttle(such as blipping the throttle and let go quickly). @keithgood7181 2 жыл бұрын
Well IF that was your only 2 choices it would be easy. He probably figured if he slams into cars in the intersection him and his passengers are going to die anyway! SO.. why take others with you! Plus you probably have a better chance of surviving going off the road cuz you're not slamming into a bunch of cars or trucks! NOW... that said, there's no reason they should've crashed in the first place when there were two or three other options that he had to stop the car without incident! Like put the car in neutral and use the emergency brake to stop! Or turn off the car then use the emergency brake! Or put it in neutral, the wind resistance is surprisingly stronger than you think! It will slow the car fairly quick, then use the emergency brake if the regular brakes don't work. If neither brakes work, after the wind resistance has slowed the car he could've got behind one of those big trucks that he passed and hit the back of it. Since they're both moving it wouldn't be much of an impact at all. And the driver if the truck would've most likely instinctively hit the brakes slowing both of them to a stop! There's even a couple more options but this text is long enough! But realistically, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO IN SITUATIONS LIKE THAT'S IS.. "DO NOT PANIC!!!" Which I'm sorry to say it sounded like they were all panicking! I just pray that they were all believers in Jesus Christ!!!

Quick tip. I might save somebody's life in the future is letting people know that in an automatic vehicle and a manual vehicle you can force shift the vehicle from drive to neutral without having to step on the brakes, disengaging the transmission. Some people argue that it might destroy the transmission, which isn't true in the majority of cases for vehicles. However, even if it destroyed the transmission 100% of the time, I think that's worth your life and others. Again, when you were driving you can shift into neutral without having to step on the brakes disengaging the transmission.

Bingo throw it in neutral let that motor blow up . also you never hear about people killing the engine by turning it off . This is why I don't like key less cars or cars with paddle or Dials. @@wranglerdave6452 using the hand brake would likely cause the car to go completely out of control and crash. Some options in that situation are: 1) Shift into neutral 2) Shift into lower gears, If it doesn't start at low speed this may not be possible. 3) Last resort would be too turn off the ignition but you risk losing power brakes/steering and if you turn the key back too far the wheel lock may engage and you may lose all steering ability. Given it sounds like his brakes may have failed, I myself would have shifted into neutral and pulled off the side of the road as safely as possible then turned the key off just enough too shut down the engine so it didn't blow then possibly down shift the transmission manually gear by gear too the lowest gear allowing it too engage if it can until it's slow enough I can safely use the emergency brake too stop the vehicle. This isn't advice by any means just what I would do, Because I have had too do it previously due too a bolt or socket getting stuck in the intake.

Something similar happened to me in a carbureted monte carlo with cruise control. I switched the cruise control on and while it was on I came to a large hill in the road. To maintain the speed the cruise has to open the carb more. After I topped the hill the car never started slowing down. The acceleration continued as if I were still going up a hill. At 120mph I got on the brakes as hard as I could and switched the ignition off and was able to stop. I looked at it and found out when the cruise opened the carb to maintain the speed the linkage had gotten stuck so even though the cruise had backed off the the linkage caused the carb to still be open to far

This is what and what not to do if this happens to you (Be aware that it might not work, but better try than die) What to do: 1st Turn on the hazard signal of the car and start slamming your horn to make everyone around aware of the threat, if possible get to the road shoulder to avoid hitting anyone. 2nd Put the car in Neutral gear, this will make the engine stop delivering power to the wheels making the car to start decelerating due to friction with the air and road. 3rd, now try slightly breaking, if this doesn’t work slightly pull from the hand break, never go almost the way because you will loose control over the car. If everything goes well you will eventually stop without getting anyone harmed. Extra: Calling the cops can also make this easier as they could escort you or cut the road if this accident happens. What not to do: 1. Dont panic, usually this leads to bad decision taking. 2. Do not turn off the car (take the key out or put it into parking mode) this always makes the wheel stop working so you will not be able to drive the car, meaning you will loose control over the car, and sometimes this will also make the hand break turn all the way on making the situation even worse. I hoped this information doesn’t need to be used, but in the case of need I hope it was helpful. Can I get my comment pinned so this can help all people?

This happened to me about a month ago, in far less dramatic a fashion, thank God. And honestly, the outcome of my own situation, was due in large part to this family's tragic death. Long story short- I entered my 2011 f150, started it, depressed the brake, recognized stiffness but didn't think much about it, shifted into drive and immediately lurched forward. I tried to brake. Nothing. I tried to stand on the brake. Nothing. Meanwhile I'm accelerating at a relatively slow, but constant rate. After my mind caught up, I shifted into neutral, my truck slowed, engine revved. I opened my door, got out as it slowed, and pulled out the floor mat. I was down the street headed toward a T intersection with houses everywhere. Scared the hell outta me. This whole ordeal lasted maybe 4-6 seconds. Estimate. Take-aways for anyone who cares: - Double check your floor mats- I thought I replaced mine (plastic, molded) correctly. Obviously, I didn't. Somehow, the corner or edge of the mat caught my accelerator and was wedged behind the brake. - Don't be complacent- I felt the stiffness in the brake but didn't do anything before I shifted. I should have. - Shifting into Park might not work- As I was accelerating out of my driveway, in my near panic, I passed Neutral and went straight to Park. The truck did nothing. - It can happen to anyone- I'm a firefighter. I'm used to making decisions under stress and bad situations. Mr. Saylor was a CHP officer. This can happen to anyone. Just keep your head, and shift into neutral. - This family didn't die in vain- I'd heard this story before. It was in my subconscious. While I wasn't in fear of my life, I was in fear of taking someone else's. Playing this scenario out in my head several times before, because of this tragic accident, is the only reason I was able to regain my composure and react. I pray God brings comfort to their families and rest to their souls. Hopefully this helps someone out there. Take care everyone and be safe.

Knate, when you accidentally shifted into Park, nothing change? The motor didn't Rev? Am I correct in assuming you did that first and then you came back from Park and put it in neutral? Also does that year of F150 have a key or the ability to turn the ignition off while you're driving? I understand in your Panic maybe you didn't think of that but it seems like that should be a common part of training to get one's driver license. Perhaps I'm wrong but I think every car ever made has the ability to turn off the engine while you're driving whether it's 5 mph or 100 mph. You might lose the power braking assistance because of lack of vacuum from the engine, but the brakes will still work Also can you make it more clear about the mat bunched up under the brake? Was there so much of the mat shoved under the break that it was strong enough to physically hold the brake pedal up and keep it from being depressed even when you stood on it? If that was the case then that's pretty serious and you're correct you should have paid attention to it, even turning the key off would not solve that problem, although at least it would keep the engine from continuing to make you accelerate. In conclusion, after reading so many of these comments and listening to the so-called experts in the video it still boggles my mind why nobody thinks of turning the key off. If the people in the Toyota had done that, especially on a straight open stretch of highway, they could have easily pulled over to the right and coasted to a stop

Just to clear up something that a lot of people have brought up: 1. Why couldn’t he push the clutch in? 2. Why couldn’t he shift into neutral/park/reverse? 3. Why couldn’t he turn the engine off? 1. The car he was driving was a Lexus ES350 which only came in automatic(if I’m not wrong)so there was no clutch pedal. 2. The drive selector lever in most automatics doesn’t physically change the gears. It has to go through a computer which then makes the change. So the computer may have prevented him from shifting into neutral when the engine was revving at such high rpm to prevent him from damaging the transmission(because some idiots[presumably 18 year old kids trying to drag race with their mum’s ‘08 Corolla] damaged their automatic transmissions before by suddenly shifting from neutral to drive to ‘launch’ their car). 3. You had to hold down the engine start/stop button for 3 seconds to stop the engine to prevent someone accidentally/mischievously pressing the button and damaging the entire car. According to a NHTSA report, they put drivers in a similar situation and some tried to turn off the engine but did not know they had to hold it for 3 seconds. This was a rental and mark would not have known this.

This happened to me a few months ago in my '02 Celica. Ended up colliding with a car at an intersection at 70 mph in a 45. The other driver and I were both ok, thank God. But seeing the story of this family makes me think about how it could've been worse and I was very blessed. EDIT: For those asking why I didn't put it into neutral and brake- simply put, I just didn't know that I could do that. I had less than a minute to figure it out (between 11:49 and 11:50 pm). My mind wasn't clear, as my worst fear was unfolding in that moment. I'm also a fairly new driver and just got my license at 25 (I'm 26) because I was scared to drive my whole life. I wasn't thinking clearly... I panicked. I just kept hoping that pushing as hard as I could on the stiff brake pedal would do something but it didn't. E-brake started to sort of slow the car down a bit but by then I had reached the intersection and crashed. Hope that answers all questions. 🙂

This is literally one of my worst nightmares. I'm in my 30s and I'll never forget when I got my first car at 17. It was my second day driving it and I was going to a store and when I pulled into a parking spot the brakes went down to the floor and I just kept going down a hill of mulch that went down to a 4 lane road. Thank God a bush stopped my car. I def could've pulled the e brake but I was inexperienced. I'm pretty sure it traumatized me a bit because to this day I have this fear of my car brakes just going.

bro, sorry for your loss, but quick question, when u put it in neutral, did the motor break or something? because when u put it in neutral, when u press gas, it doesnt move but it still makes sounds from the motor. Edit: Just to clear something up, yes, i know that putting your car in neutral while its pedal is stuck or your pressing gas will make sounds from the motor, what im trying to say is if the pedal is stuck, or your pressing gas while at neutral, will the motor break because of the rpm? @cdf-5009
@cdf-5009 2 жыл бұрын
@@JustVacuumBG The engine does not break. When you but a car in neutral it's like pushing the clutch in on a manual transmission, it doesn't allow the engine to put rotation force on the transmission therfore not allowing the car to move under its own power. Yes, the car will still have the engine running and revving but that's because when neutral is activated sincros are moved in such a way that the gear running off of the engine is not contacting and other gear as to transmit power, so the engine can spin freely. So don't worry if put your car in neutral, come to a complete stop and select the intended gear.

As a truck driver I am often very critical about other people on the road, but you have to understand that this was not a super common issue prior to this massive recall. Today it is almost universal knowledge that if your vehicle is running away, you put it in neutral, but at the time, and especially in a panic situation, I would not blame somebody for not thinking to do this.

Mark sailor had just came back from holiday on August 28th 2009. Basically, he sped up to 120 mph and he cannot stop. His accelerator was stuck. His brother in law called 911 while in the car. The woman announcer said that the 911 call lasted just 17 seconds. But due to many dialogues it could’ve been longer. After 30 seconds, mark sailor drove car off into a ravine. And all 4 passengers were instantly killed. If there were 136000 people in this car, then only 1 out of the total 136000 people would survive, or 1 in 136000. Chances are so low that even I can’t survive for impact. There was nothing they could do. The only escape they had would be to just swing the car open and jump out of the car if there’s no vehicle, but that’s still not going to help. The chances would still double, but that’s still not going to be enough. Damage from falling from high places is way more painful. If you could somehow find a way to survive I will be impressed. Sad 😢

I was surprised at the resistance, and it was intimidating to hear it accelerate. I let go of the brake and tried to press harder, just to find that I was now going faster. About to rear end someone, I turned down a side street and tried to jam it into park, which sounded like a nightmare. In hindsight, I probably should have put it into neutral?
