I was one of the artists that worked on this game. Thanks everybody for the kind words. This was by far one of the most fun projects I had the pleasure to develop and I look forward to building a triple AAA version of this game someday! By far one of the most fun games to play test. Thanks for the excellent review. I think you did a fantastic job. Just a note about the lore, our office manager Steve Moore was also a brilliant playwright and contributed to much of the character of the game. Also, Beverly Garland was one of the best art directors I ever had the pleasure of working with and had so much to do with creating a cohesive look and feel for this game. So happy to see people are still playing :-)

Oh dude.... please don't tease us like that... I can only imagine what a modern version of this game would be like with a fully fledged story and everything. Thanks for contributing to this absolute masterpiece. It is criminal that the game didn't sell enough copies. It was ahead of its time.

Super cool to see one of you on here. Thanks for the great game, it was an enjoyable and memorable experience in my childhood. I'm an adult and a developer now, and Netstorm is part of the inspiration for my recent swan dive into the world of indie game dev. The art and design made it feel nice for my eyes to take in the game world, even as my structures crumbled. The essence of the game was wonderfully unique, and even the frustrating challenges I'd unintentionally create for myself (in a moment of poor strategic planning) would turn into fun puzzles to work through/around. Thanks again!

Really appreciate what you guys did with this game. To this day this is one of my favorite games of that era. I remember getting to know about it on a demo version that I played to hell and back. Many many years later I would actually go and buy the full big box version. You had some absolutely great ideas here and the game stands tall to this day even comparing it to classics such as StarCraft. Absolute shame you didn't get the proper recognition and sales at the time... the game deserved a lot of success.

It's weird how much of the themes of this game made it into Sacrifice which came out in 2000. Floating islands, a central priest character, a Pantheon of Gods representing elements, these aren't entirely unique themes, but it's weird how much they parallel each other.

Yes, this is one of the best games ever created. From the unique mechanics (a combination of chess, go, and tetris) to the unique setting, this game was amazing. I know that many people remember it for the multiplayer, which was indeed way ahead of its time, but I think that the devs also put a lot of effort into the universe that they created. All the units and buildings were so original and each came with its own flavor text that added so much to their character. "Stone Towers are built from the outside in. Their builders give their strength and courage to the Tower, so much so that in every third layer of bricks is the body of a brave man." Together with Mark Morgan's amazing soundtrack, these tiny details really manage to set the mood. Glad to see it get more recognition!

I still remember playing this in the 2002-2003 and loving it. I got it from a random demo disk but i think it must have come already hacked or something because it was the full game. I didn't have internet at home back then so i just played it singleplayer and loved every minute of it. It felt like it had so much personality and so many cool little details. Like you said from stuff like the turret wind up sound and priest chanting to seeing all the tiny villages built into the sides of the islands you're fighting on.

Used to play this game with my brother and friends when I was young. Loved every second of it even if I lost. The sounds (especially the priest ritual) was atmospheric as hell and so was the music. There was something special about the music/ambience of older games, whether it was Netstorm, Hexen, Heretic II, Fallout 1&2 or even WoW vanilla / TBC that we don't see anymore. I think Fallen Earth was the last developed game with a foreboding and dark music track that I played before it all became modernized.

I remember playing hours of netstorm back when I was a teenager, racking up truly ridiculous dial up bills. It must have been during the open beta cause I couldnt have paid for it. Back then, your units would get stronger the more priests you had successfully sacrificed and by the end, some of us with more time than sense pretty much couldnt be defeated. Before i lost my internet privileges, there was a tournament profile which gave you just acces to all elements and I think thats what I played for the remainder of my time in the world of Nimbus.

I used to play this from time to time. The odd but compelling setting and the puzzle elements with very hard counters felt like a quite unique take on the genre. I played Netstorm quite devotedly when it first came out and for quite a few years afterwards. It was my first experience of online gaming. It was a very good game, and even after Activision withdrew support, it remained playable for many years. Community-made patches corrected many of the bugs and imbalances present in the original release version of the game. I still tell people about how revolutionary it was for the time. The bridging mechanic added what was essentially a high-speed spatial IQ duel component to every game that was incredibly tense and satisfying. "Bridging" was the most important part of the game and was quite a skill because there were hot keys for each bridge slot, but also a cooldown for each one, so you had to find ways to use even odd or inconvenient bridge pieces as you raced to get around and cut off your opponent or prevent them from cutting you off. Very fun mechanic.

I remember this game actually being pretty heavily marketed here in Sweden. There were ads in different gaming magazines for this game, almost as many as you would expect for some really big title (we have fewer ads in our magazines than folks do state-side (comparing Swedish and US PC gamer from the era, there were less than 1/3 the number of ads in the Swedish version), so seeing this many ads for a game was pretty rare.) Game was really cool, if a bit janky. Shame the spiritual successor seems to be dead in the water :( Also, what was it with games about flying islands at this time? Stratosphere: Conquest of the Skies was released within less than half a year, and that's another game with the theme of fighting on floating islands, though this one was more actiony and your islands could have motors attached to them.

Why do you guys have less ads? That was half the purpose of a gaming magazine back in the day imo. To let people know X game exists.
@AFnord
@AFnord Жыл бұрын
@@rubz1390 I would guess there are two reasons, first of all Sweden does not have a very big population, so fewer people to advertise to and fewer companies who can advertise. Second reason is that people here don't generally like being advertised to, and if a magazine is predominantly advertisement people are less keen on buying it. The advertisement they had were regularly criticized by readers (at least they chose to include such things in their mail section), and they said that without it price would be even higher, but there's a balance. There were even a few times when they would bash their US counterpart for going overboard with the ads. Also when it comes to finding out what games are being released, that's what the articles are for!

I played this religiously back in the year 2000 and got in a lot of trouble with my mother for the long internet usage on our dial-up modem. You haven't really describe what multiplayer was like so I'll as good a summery as I can. When you first start playing multiplayer you create a multiplayer save which determines the shape of your island and your starting generator, more on that later. Unlike other RTS games there are no "factions" exactly, it's more like the different types of cards in collectable card games like Magic: The Gathering, it goes deeper than that as generators are like lands in magic, For example wind generators create wind energy that helps create wind aligned units, but sun units need no specific energy. You start of as a level 1 and you only have the ability to create Sun Disc throwers and sun cannons. and each priest you sacrifice for anything other than storm power grants you a new level. You can ether sacrifice for knowledge of a new unit type that's limited to the level of your altar; so in a level 1 altar you can only get sun barricade, stone tower, wind generator, sailing skiff, rain generator, acid barricade, thunder generator or bulf. Or you can upgrade your altar without destroying it so the next priest you sac grants level 2 units. But having the knowledge to make units isn't the same as being able to make them there's no way a max level player can implement all their knowledge against a level 1 player because there's only so much space on your home island for workshops and slots in your workshop so it's like building a deck from a collectable card game in real time.

I found this game randomly browsing around... 2010, maybe? The playerbase was very active at that time and I quickly became addicted to playing online almost everyday. I kinda sucked but still was able to level up my island to the max level. There was a "rank" thing that used to reset the knowledge in exchange for a permanent attack/defense boost, but the new devs removed it, probably to avoid infinite grinding. As the years passed it became harder and harder to find someone to play against. Also: wind was OP.

One of the best games I ever played back then. But I only played the campaign offline. Some levels were really difficult. But you can find an easy way to win safely. Simply surround the enemy with bridges at early game. The AI didn't know how to break through these bridges. But it was fun anyway. Personally, I don't need it as multiplayer. I downloaded the game through abandonware but it keeps crashing whenever there is thunder sounding off in the background. Anyone know how to fix this?

If you're planning to review more old games I suggest Dark Reign: The Future of War (another 1997 RTS from Activision).

The joke of naming your company Titanic must have been less funny after the game's release... way to tempt fate. I'm not so familiar with RTS sales number, but is there any with no campaign or an afterthought one that has ever been succesful ? (outside of Sins of a solar empire, which I think is not only a RTS but a light 4X as well) I mean Ages of, XXarcraft, C&C, even total anihilation or dawn of war... all the classics had a good/great solo basis before multiplayer, I think that's a factor

Hey Zade, I was just wondering how you upload so quickly!? Do you have an editor by any chance? I'd love to be able to upload as often as you do! 😅

No editor, just me! This and the last Company of Heroes video were made in unison somewhat as that first vid was sponsored and had to go out at a said day. So this one was done too and I figured it wouldn't make sense to wait around and not release it. Look like you don't release too infrequently based on the last couple of months! It's all just a time thing though. Different lives mean different amounts of time we can all allocate to making vids :P

Thank you, its something I've been focusing on this year in particular. Last couple were more inconsistent for sure. There'd be times where I would a video for 4-6 weeks 💀💀 feel free to dm me on Twitter if you wanna chat more!

I never had the original game but I did have a pirated version. I must admit as a kid I sucked at this game. Would love to have a crack at it as an adult especially since I grew up playing other RTS games.

I really loved this as well....its a shame the remake has kind of died as well :/ I'd love to see a new version of it. Preferably keeping the spritework, i am not really a fan of "updated" graphics in remakes made into 3d. It never looks as good in my eyes as the original. It looses its charm. I thought the flying squids were terrifying....and how their icewall towers simply regenerated. Even though the mighty thunder cannons seemed poutmatched you still were outgunned. So many incredible memories from seeing my brothers play this as a little wee one. Even cooler to get to try it out myself. Thank you for this review :) well done!

I feel like the box art killed it almost as much as people just not knowing it was a thing. A lightning bolt? That's it. What is is? What type of game? There is nothing there except it's namesake to get your attention. I'm not a marketing guy. So I could be horrible wrong about this. But I wouldn't even pick it up off the shelf, thinking it was some kind of virus blocker software.

@@Zade_95 I had to keep it hidden from my very religious father. It was a pretty bold move to make the instruction manual a bible for storm worshipers. Thanks for the video. This is a great way to tell people about Netstorm without my friends thinking I made it up.
