Sergius Posad is on of the great historic towns of Russia. The original settlement grew around one of Russia's greatest monasteries - the Trinity Lavra established by St. Sergius of Radonezh in 1337.
The settlement grew in size as the importance of the Monastery developed and in 1742 was granted town status.
During the years of the Soviet Union, Soviet authorities changed the name of the town first to just Sergiyev in 1919, and then to Zagorsk in 1930, in memory of the revolutionary Vladimir Mikhailovich Zagorsky, born in Nizhny Novgorod of Jewish parents. Following the 1917 October Revolution, he was appointed Bolshevik Party Chief in Moscow, serving in that capacity from September 7, 1918 until his assassination in September of the following year.
The original name of the town was restored in 1991

Nigel! You do amazing work. Insightful. Illuminating. Clever. Informed. Just like man you got your stuff together. Difficult to imagine that this was 1970 Russia. What a pile of manure we were fed about the evil USSR when I was growing up in New York at that time.

Dimitri. Thank you very much for your visit and comment. My first visit to Russia was on a school trip in 1969, aged 16!! The trip made a great impression on my young mind - seeing the Quayside at St. Petersburg thronged with happy, flag waving children.. The overnight train trip to Moscow and waking early to see the passing countryside and villages. Queuing for over 4 hours, snake like through Red Square to visit the Mausoleum. Marvelling at the MSU and the views over the city.... Life seemed so normal, I recollect...and travelled the length and breadth recollect....From that moment, I fell in love with this great country travelling length and breadth... However it was not until the internet came along that I was able to really find out about the true history of Russia. Thru my videos, my aim is to cut through this "Deep Manure" and show a positive side. For over 70 years ( and it still occurs today) we were force fed lies about the Russian Empire from the Soviets. And during the Soviet years we were force fed "Lies" from the "West". And, as I see it, my quest is unending!!
