Annunciation to the shepherds
The annunciation to the shepherds is an episode in the Nativity of Jesus described in the Bible in Luke 2, in which angels tell a group of shepherds about the birth of Jesus. It is a common subject of Christian art and of Christmas carols.
As described in verses 8-20 of the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke, shepherds were tending their flocks out in the countryside near Bethlehem, when they were terrified by the appearance of an angel. The angel explains that he has a message of good news for all people, namely that "Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
After this, a great many more angels appear, praising God with the words "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." Deciding to do as the angel had said, the shepherds travel to Bethlehem, and find Mary and Joseph and the infant Jesus lying in the manger, just as they had been told. The adoration of the shepherds follows.
Chapel of the Angels
This site is marked by the magnificent Chapel of the Angels (Chapel of the Shepherds’ Field), designed by Antonio Barluzzi in 1954. The chapel is shaped like a field tent that the shepherds may have used. Above the chapel entrance is the bronze figure of an angel. The chapel has a cement and glass dome that lets in light symbolizing the great light brought by the angel. The church holds breathtaking murals depicting the angel appearing to the shepherds; the shepherds paying their respects to Jesus and celebrating the birth of Christ.
The Franciscan church encompasses an ancient cave that the shepherds may have used. Alongside the Chapel of the Angels are the remains of a 4th century church and monastery; this shows that the site was identified as Shepherds’ Field as early as the 4th century.

All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water, and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us.

Zahi, thanks for The Shepherds field. From outside the church reminds of a resting sheep. Inside it has the most delightful paintings of the angel who brings the message to animals and humans. (Look at the dog!) At least one day is needed to enjoy it all, caves, wine- and oil presses.

Shepherds are an important part of the story of Christ: they are workers, which gives us a foreshadowing of the type of life that Jesus will be living (he will not be living in a palace, like Moses); Shepherds are also found throughout Jesus parables and sermons; Jesus uses the lives of Shepherds to tell us how we should live our lives; Shepherds keep watch over their flocks, they do not leave even the smallest sheep behind, they go out to find the lost sheep and bring them home--every sheep is important...they live a nomadic life, they count on God and the elements to care for them, they travel lite and unburdened by material goods...they way that they care for their flocks will influence their ability to sheer wool and sell it and create a living for themselves through the year...the good from their sheep (wool) is vital to survival in the winter/cold months...wool is vital for blankets, coats, sweaters, socks, pants and all manner of goods used for warmth...dts/usa

People who have traveled in the US, but not in Israel, will understand cave dwelling countries from the Southwest of our country: New Mexico; Mesa Verde in Colorado, Arizona (and the Grand Canyon)--there were cave dwellers in all of these places: it was a way of life...even today in Jerusalem, we are seeing centuries of buildings built on top of the original caves--I still believe that the closest present day structures that exist that are similar to the original Jerusalem would be Petra (Jordan) and Goreme (Turkey) (along with the Pyramid structures in Egypt, of course)...that would give us a closer understanding (perhaps you will video those places for us someday, Zahi?--they are also already online)...dts/usa

Danny does a great job of showing the production of oil and wine for the Israeli area (probably the two most important crops: grapes and olives--along with maybe figs/pomegranates...and a barley meal/lentils of some kind (for unleavened bread)...they would not have been eating yeast bread...Israel would have been close to the Silk Road and if not a center of commerce, Jerusalem would have had a high level of commerce for the area coming off the Silk Road (Morrocco to India)...this would have generated a lot of wealth and is why the Romans would even have been interested in Israel in the first place (it wasn't a particularly strategic military complex)...dts/usa

That is what I have received from your videos that I did not get anywhere else...this was largely a cave dwelling society--the New Testament does not give that feeling at all--it uses the descriptions of the places, an inn, a church (temple), a home, a pool, a room, etc--but nowhere in the New Testament does it say 'Mary owned a home that was part cave at the back of it' (see the House at Loretto)...or the manger where Jesus was born was placed in a cave...or while Jesus was wandering in the desert and being tempted by the devil, he was living out of caves...ir the Pool of Siloam was a pool at the base of a large cave that provided the water source for the entire city of Jerusalem...it just does not say that--and if you have never seen Israel, you don't get that part of Jesus story...your videos have given that mental picture to me...thank you for completing the picture...dts/usa

Danny the tour guide did a great job of explaining the additional meaning of sheep to the Jews and the importance of sheep to their culture: the sheep were the basis of the sacrifice to God on a regular basis (especially at Passover) and of course, then Jesus becomes the ultimate sacrificial lamb for the rest of humanity...dts/usa

Another reason the cave complex is important for understanding: Jesus was raised as a carpenter and his father Joseph was a carpenter--in present day language (and this is what the New Testament translation is: carpenter), but in the meaning of that time, it really meant (to us in the present day), stone mason...Jesus was a carver of stone, he literally carved caves...it would have been hard, back breaking work, carving stones by day without the benefit of dynamite (most likely, mostly for Roman roads) and studying the Talmud at night (most likely in a yeshiva), with one day off a week for temple...being a shepherd (a real one) would have been a vacation, compared to his life...a grueling, non-relenting, backbreaking life...if a 40 day romp through the desert seems like he lost his mind a bit--he probably did--his life would have led to that...dts/usa

Christ was born on Hanukah but it was changed in the calendar from Kislev 25 to December 25. How do we know this? We know because the Awassi sheep give birth in the last two weeks of December... the shepherds were out at night to make certain that the ewes did not have problems giving birth. Awassi sheep are the ONLY sheep breed native to Palestine

Absence of evidence is evidence of absence.
