When I was a medical student in Pakistan in 1969 we protested against the dictators general Ayyub Khan and they came looking for me and I had go underground for months. Later I escaped to the USA. One point that Zakaria mentioned in this interview needs to be correct. China generally doesn't allow ANY protests, unless they have government background aiming to show angers to other contries. Although protesting is a civil right written in China's constitution, any organized protesting needs to be approved by government and police, which you'd never succeed. From time to time, in extreme curcumstances people may just go on the streat without approval, and as long as it's not against the government and/or the party, the government may accept their propositions, and even make limited compromises, but also always punish the organizors afterwards. So in this sense, what we saw in the recent protests in the China mainland is real bravery.

Some protests are approved, but they are always ones not aimed at anything domestic, like small demonstrations in front of the embassies to protest various policies in foreign countries seen as insulting or harmful to China. The examples the video listed do happen quite often, but they aren't officially sanctioned, and usually just tolerated and non-violently suppressed and controlled. They're also almost exclusively protesting something quite local. But they are surprisingly common despite the government's wishes.

Westerners don’t understand protesting against authority is deemed as immoral in Confucian culture. Unless you experience indescribable injustice, people are encouraged to solve their differences behind the scene. Once it gets public, in a gigantic country densely populated like China, it complicates things and makes it difficult to compromise. Therefore, it’s not some thought control, dictators or fear of oppression that made most Chinese silent, it’s the Chinese culture. We don’t have your God-people relationship that centered your social compact on ‘rights’. Instead it’s morality and results of governance that bond the ruling entities and subjects together. That’s why in your eyes, zero-Covid infringes people’s ‘rights’, but in Chinese eyes, it’s a ‘moral duty’ to protect the elderly. In November 2020 - three weeks before the vaccine was released - 4 of 15 seniors on that floor died. I personally know two other facilities with worse numbers. The vaccine is a life-saving game changer. No cv19 deaths in that home since then. Americans should be celebrating an amazing accomplishment (the vaccine). If there was still none, everyone would be screaming for its discovery.

During the 1989 Tienanmen protest, CCP politburo under Deng's command waited 30 days to find out who are the traitors and where are the foreign agent cells which instigate and support the protest. The student leaders left the square the night before military sweep, they showed up in the US within a week. The 2019 Hong Kong protests went through the same process, but it die down after the foreign agent cells were destroyed. Just now, Xi and CCP politburo have decided to loosen up the Covid lock downs, started with Canton. I guess the foreign agent cells are already identified. Each event made the foreign cells to risk exposure by performing instigating activities. 🤔😎

For 33 years, since the 1989 protests, this is the first time that Chinese people speak of their wishes for freedom! For years, I had thought that China is full of cowards and selfish indifferent souls. Any protests of certain scale, before this one, were mostly for the protesters’ own interests, not something that concerns all, not something related to value and rights. Therefore, the protests going on now are of significance. People in Shanghai are chanting for liberation of Xinjiang, people in Beijing are chanting cancelling the lockdown across all cities. For the first time, people are protesting for both themselves and for others alike, and fighting for the common value of freedom and dignity. I appreciate these efforts. I love these protesters.
