I think extremism breeds when people don't have a good understanding of other people except for others who live in their bubble and think everyone must think like me because I have been enlightened. @@iantroutt6972 that's how misunderstanding breeds, extremism only manifests itself when dialogue stops. It wouldn't matter if we couldn't understand each other as long as we were continuing dialogue and putting a concerted effort into understanding our positions. If that dialogue were to stop, it would show that either one or both parties no longer wish to achieve understanding. When words fail, violence is ,quite literally, the only option that remains. Well, other than completely giving up and compromising on your way of life so you could avoid conflict by _joining_ the other side, but most people aren't willing to do that.

Or a troubled 10-year-old can have all the problems solved by being told he/she has the wrong gender followed by suggesting genital mutilation and puberty blockers encouraged by some far Left lunatic teacher who convinces the child this is the answer ... and no need to tell the parents? Or how about the right to an abortion on demand no questions asked all the way up to the very last moment of the third trimester ... or even after birth. Those seem to be issues Leftists care about. Ranked choice or proportional representation - which is actually what most European democratic systems use. The Best alternative is not a backroom decision by party bosses ~ it’s proportional representation or some form of ranked voting. The American founders knew full well the dangers of populism and direct democracy. The original system saw a weak president, senators appointed by state legislatures, and no primaries. Over time we have creeped farther from this balanced and functional system. The President is overpowered, with radicals wanting them to be near dictators. Senators are popularly elected so no different from congressional representatives, and as Fareed so expertly explained, primaries that appeal to the most radicalized elements of society. Now when we throw Gerrymandering into the mix, we are as close to dysfunctional a system as possible without completely collapsing. If the trends don’t reverse, it will collapse completely.

Fareed Zakaria's explanation of why candidates are more extreme today, points to the symptoms rather than the cause of the problem. There were major Supreme Court decisions including Buckley vs Valeo which ruled that money equals speech, and then Citizens United vs FEC, which blew the doors off any limits that existed to regulate the size of the donations from corporate entities to political candidates, to the extent that they don't even have to identify who themselves. If we knew who they were we would be able to make better decisions as to who benefits the most from any given piece of legislation.

Some proposals to fix this (rejecting the “smoke filled room”): ranked choice voting. The voter selects, say, 4 choices. If someone gets a plurality they get elected. If not, the #4 candidate (in popularity) drops out, and their votes reapportioned. If your #1 was #4, your #1 vote goes to your #2, and so on. Nobody’s vote is ever “wasted.” Another, at least for a limited period of time, is for the voter to be able to select “none of the above.” The previous candidates are all fired, and the thing is run again. So much of our government is on regulatory auto pilot as it is.

Honestly, I would be willing to say ( and this is based off of my own experience so I could be incorrect in the general sense) that most Americans tire from the media and really don't give a damn about it because more than not we think there is an agenda trying to be sold to us. If you're fed enough garbage, you tend to stop eating it so you tend to stop listening to the media all together or at least the crappy part of it and more the news that is hopefully not biased or at least get a bite of news from multiple areas. Water consumption in California is a big issue as well as inflation. I'd like to hear about more solutions that people can make than just "we should do something about it from politicians". True I am just saying "We should do something about it" but I don't know how money and economics works for the inflation part very well and for the water supply, has anyone thought of purifying ocean water like taking salt and other impurities out of it so Cali can get some water? I think this is actually being done but i'm not sure.

Social media as well as conventional media have shifted things. The other "behind the scenes" factor is campaign financing intertwining unrelated campaigns. Both parties expect candidates to raise money.. and give a big chunk of that back into various bodies within the party for redistribution. Control over that shared funding has driven things in certain directions, based partly on how much specific candidates can raise. It's not about who has the best solutions/ideas, but who can raise the most funds. Beneath the candidates and fundraising is an industry of people who live off of that process, making ads, taking in cash and policy proposals, yadda yadda. It goes beyond places making gobs of commercials and into an almost venture-capitalism style of fundraising. All that definitely hasn't helped :(

Not sure about the French electoral system, but I can tell you about the German system: Germany has nineteen parties of consequence, thereof currently six in the German federal parliament, but local and specific parties in federal states exist, too for example the party for the Danish minority in Schleswig-Holstein. Voters have two votes, one for a candidate, the second for the party. It is posible to vote for a candidate and give the second vote to a party the candidate is not part of. The candidate which wins the direct vote in his/her district has the seat secure. The rest of the seats would be distributed in accordance to their share of the second votes. Parties who don't exceed the 5% barring clause won't get a seat in parliament. The party leaders are selected by vote during party assemblies by delegates of each district. Representatives and delegates are voted by their chapter in their district. The current chancellor Olaf Scholz (Social Democrats, 25.7%) has been elected by the parliament. He has formed a coalition with the Greens (14.8%), third in ranking in parliamentary seats, and the Free Liberals (not to confuse with the American definition!), forth in ranking 11.5%. This coalition represents 52% of the electorare. In Germany every German residedent is registered at the municipal office and if holding a German citizenship automatically registered to vote and got his/her ballot by mail several weeks before the election. Every German citizen has the right to vote, either by showing up to the poll station or by mail, regardless whether a convicted felon or not. It is a basic right, enshrined in our constitution.

Gerrymandering hurts both parties. The ones doing it get more extreme so they can rev up their base (that they defined themselves, geographically). It also ends up with at least one district that they are expected to lose, and that one will go extreme in the other direction both because the voting block is concentrated but also to campaign against the extremists who gerrymandered. It, along with campaign financing, have done an immense amount of damage.

The Netherlands and Germany have a parliamentary system with proportional representation. 1% of the vote, 1% of the seats, etc. It gives voice to everyone, proportionally and therefore a more accurate representation of the views and priorities of all people. We in the Netherlands have an animal rights party, market-liberals, social democrats, far-right, christian-right, green parties, etc.

Spot on. Two things to add; One, the very system of 2 parties means pitting one side against the other, us against them, a limited, binary choice, where mainstream people feel no party represents them. Two, why have district representatives in Washington? Districts should be represented in the state govs. The states should then send a number of reps from anywhere in their state to the House, much like senators. It would certainly improve the quality of representatives and give the majority a chance to elect non-extremists of any party or independent. And maybe time to put a few job requirements in place?

I couldn't believe that as soon as the 2020 election was over, the conversation turned towards 2024 and has been stuck there ever since. In my country, an election is called, the gov't goes into 'caretaker' mode and then there's a month of campaigning until election day. Most of the results are known within a couple of days and then the new gov't takes over. Rinse and repeat!

As usual, Mr Zakaria takes a reasonable point and twists it to fit his own (and the network's) preferred political narrative. Thus, former British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn is dismissed as a 'totally unelectable far-Left leader', according to Mr Zakaria, who also misrepresents how the British Labour Party elects its leader. We do not have a system of 'Primaries' in the UK (no-one outside the USA does) and the Labour Party leader is elected by a vote amongst the party's individual members and affiliated organisations - isn't that how democratic organisations are supposed to operate? Jeremy Corbyn was deemed 'unelectable' due to a concerted campaign by the Tory Party, small but influential Zionist groups, the entrenched right wing within his own party, and the UK media (including the BBC, who always pander to the establishment) of smears and lies and character assassination... despite the fact that the policies he advocated were actually extremely popular. The problem in the USA is that the Primary system allows for populist campaigns to appeal to people who know nothing about politics, are not members of or volunteers for a political party, but merely 'register' themselves as supporters of a party. No other democracy in the world asks individuals to 'register' their political preference as a matter of course. And to do this without linking it to some form of interest in and commitment to political activity (ie. party membership) is actually very stupid and naturally favours candidates for office who have no real programme or policies but who merely play on populist themes and repeat meaningless slogans. When you add in the fact that US law allows people to hurl the most appalling accusations against others without any legal obligation to back them up with evidence, and the high proportion of ignorant 'low-information' voters, then you have a disaster in the making,.. and you have duly made it.
@swordarmstudios6052

Corbyn was a populist - and populism is cancer. It was an easily winnable election with a moderate labor. Britian is in the same position we are. We hate both our parties and so we pick the one that sucks that least as far as we can tell. Also complaining 'zionists' - That's like legit anti-semitism. Boris isn't great, but he never complained about Jews. The british people were wise in rejecting Corbyn. If the kind of people defending him are the kind of people who complain exactly how your complaining. This is a carbon copy of what a radical sounds like. Blaming other people when your preferred candidate loses, because those dumb voters didn't like what he was selling. If only those low-information voters possessed your political wisdom! If only they understood the greatness of Corbyn, and only if they saw threw the Zionist-capitalist ruse! Jesus man. Your a parody.

A few days ago on a news service youtube video, I made one of my many Anti-Fascist, Anti-New Fascist Republican Party comments... Steven was kind enough to send me a long reply to my comment which at first I suspected of being a rejection. Writing back, I promised him that I would steal his reply and post it where it might make a difference. This is such a place. . Steven D 7 hours ago fascism is: "A system of government that exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with belligerent nationalism." Mussolini was quite straightforward about all this. In a 1923 pamphlet titled "The Doctrine of Fascism" he wrote, "If classical liberalism spells individualism, Fascism spells government." But not a government of, by, and for We The People - instead, it would be a government of, by, and for the most powerful corporate interests in the nation. (It was actually Italian philosopher Giovanni Gentile who wrote the entry in the Encyclopedia Italiana that said: "Fascism should more appropriately be called corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.") In 1938, Mussolini brought his vision of fascism into full reality when he dissolved Parliament and replaced it with the "Camera dei Fasci e delle Corporazioni" - the Chamber of the Fascist Corporations. Corporations were still privately owned, but now instead of having to sneak their money to folks and covertly write legislation, they were openly in charge of the government.

Fareed Zakaria, I fear I have to disappoint you. Here in Germany election candidates get mostly choosen by a small non-representative section in each party as well. There's even something like primaries. It just happens that primaries are less important, because there are more parties. That said, there are also signs of hope. Over the last two years, the three biggest parties put much emphasis on allowsing a lot of voters for electing party leaders. CDU established a process with no less than 1000 electing delegates. SPD newly involved all party members in such elections, made possible by modern communication infrastructure. And the Greens allow every single party member to propose amendements to the party's election programme. The road pretty clearly goes towards popular votes, similar to how the political system in Switzerland works. It's a long way to go, but I'm pretty sure it'll happen. Just look at Bernie Sanders and his remarkable successes. No breakthrough, yet, but the emphasis is on _yet_ .

In Canada we have had 3 viable parties (plus a few minor parties) for quite some time (decades), with our centrist party frequently holding power, especially at the federal level.
