Fun fact for anyone who doesnt know, the silver fins on the chest are called "vortex generators". Basically makes little pockets of air swirling on the surface so as wind hits the surface, it reduces drag using the vortexes as cushions. Think of it like how water flies off surfaces treated with hydrophobic chemicals.

That's neat lore, and it makes (some) sense on the Zeta. That said, it seems like a rather hollow excuse for a Katoki design flourish, and a pretty unnecessary excuse at that. The fins are there because he thought they'd look cool. They're there for the same reason they're on the Nu Ver Ka for the same reason they're on the ZZ Ver Ka for the same reason they're on most any other mecha design. (They're also huuuge. Vortex generators are supposed to be tiny, dozens and dozens of them scattered along a wing or something, not two big honkin' blades on each side of the chest. At "full scale" you could probably repurpose them as wings of their own for a small drone...) And besides, any practical benefit they might provide is minimal at best. Wave Rider mode already doesn't look particularly aerodynamic; putting vortex generators on it isn't going to suddenly turn it into a hypersonic VF-25. To me it looks like putting a sail on top of a high-rise apartment building and then pointing at it, proclaiming, "Look! Aerodynamic!".

Thanks for your information, tho I still didn't like it. Fortunately, there is still decent (or better, imo) 2.0 available. Unlike ZZ, Wing Zero EW(Custom), and Nu. But the ZZ is still tolerable for me personally, but not for the rest. And basically almost completely closed the opportunity for those kits to be released as anime accurate MG 2.0.

For a Ver. Ka, the design is very simplistic and Anime accurate. Which is unexpected for a Ver. Ka because most of them are hyper detailed. But it’s a welcome surprise because it shows Katoki made this with love for the series in mind.

"most of them are hyper detailed" what? The only MG ver.Ka kits that are considered very detailed are Nu and Sazabi and his recent work, WingZero EW. The rest barely have any surface details, they rely on massive uses of marking decals.

Only his MG nu, Sazabi, and RX78 has the amazing extra surface detail. The rest are pretty much not really that different in terms of extra details except Unicorn and SInanju stein, but both are his creation since the beginning, not reimagining other designers work like he did on the three.But yeah, I really want this kid to have at least similar style to the RG ones

I think people who say this haven't built it, the frame is ridiculously detailed, and the accents and color apps on this kit are stupid. If you've built the Gunpla Evolution Project Zeta you know what I mean - endless stickers and still missing colors. This thing has painted silver parts poking through all over. The armor itself is fairly plain and flat, it's a clean design and the kind of clinical aesthetic I would actually expect, without needless panel lines. It's busy enough as it is, and it goes together in an astonishing amount of layers. Each panel line you see in the armor frame is from layered parts. The behind the knee frame is actually marvelously detailed, as is the frame parts underneath the armor skirts. The leg build alone is layer after layer of individual plastic pieces that fit together like a puzzle. The hip armor also has a mechanical rotating hinge joint, and a hinge with the beam saber inside. The wings are also more detailed than other Zeta kits with additional color apps and hinges. It's probably one of the most complex builds I've seen, let alone built myself.

A neat bit of trivia, those silver fins poking out of the chest that are synonymous with Katoki designs are actual funcional parts of an aircraft, they’re called vortex generators, you can read more on them online but the gist of what they do is basically help keep an aircraft stable during flight and reduce drag

But it's different situation for MG ZZ, where that kit just released as old, outdated kit or the newer and better Ver Ka, but with design flare that I don't like. Kinda like "Just take it, or take it then modify it yourself, or leave it".

The Ver. Ka. is really impressive and there's a lot to appreciate, but i think i prefer the 2.0 based on the proportions and the color difference. That said i would love it if they made a new Zeta Plus C1 out of the Ver. Ka.

I’m thinking the hyper mega launcher and launch base will come with a titanium finish version of the kit or something when Bandai eventually makes that. The 2.0 F91 was missing the rafflesia action base that the 1.0 MG had, but the titanium finish 2.0 came with it as an extra. This way Bandai doesn’t have to *kill* the previous version, there are still valid reasons to get it (other than just aesthetics)

My last build was the MG full armor thunderbolt ver ka. which took me about 2 months because I did everything including all the waterslides and finished with topcoat. It wasn't too hard but it was definitely a marathon build that seemed like it would take forever to finish. I think I'll stay away from complex builds for a while

I think the way the flying armor pulls out and extends on the 2.0 helps give the wave rider mode a better look. Personally the Ver ka waverider looks kind of chubby and like it would have trouble flying. That being said I think it’s not a huge issue if you have no plans to display it in Waverider.

The Gunpla itself is sturdy, amazing to play with and overall amazing to handle. The details however IS more simplistic compared to other VerKas. But that's the glory of this kit. You could always add some of the Katoki style decals for that extra flare, but its better without it.

i doubt it, if you know all the wing EW MGs are essentially Ver.Ka's. redesigned by katoki himself. The only reason i feel the Wing EW Custom was made into a VerKa was bc the OG kit was old and outdated and wasnt included in the EW MG redesigns. Now if i had to choose a kit they could release for its 30th anniversary, it'll have to be a Wing Zero EW Custom Snow White Prelude or the REAL Snow White Unit as only Katoki himself knows how the Snow White unit actually looks like

@@Monvo707 actually Katoki designed all the EW kits, just they weren’t ver kas in the performance sense. Katoki wanted to make them more realistic. He didn’t touch the Epyon other than minor color changes on the legs. The most requested Wing Ver kas left are: Deathscythe Hell, Heavyarms Custom, Epyon and Talghese. If I was a betting man, Deathscythe hell would get it. The MG of it has aged quite badly and it’s the second most popular Wing kit outside of the Wing variations.

Nope, I'm building the V2AB rn and the vast majority of the detail is from the decals. People just think Ver Kas are about high detail since the Nu was essentially a 1/100 RG and that's the most popular Ver Ka

I do actually prefer the proportions on this a lot more than the 2.0 because I feel like the legs sit way to low on the 2.0. But man that wingspan of the 2.0 is a lot nicer in the waverider. I am however disappointed that it still has troubles to stand. I would have preferred a more high heeled look if it meant that it could stand more easily.

The conclusion is, if I'm on situation where I don't own a single MG Zeta and want to choose one as my first MG Zeta, 2.0 is the overall better choice, even being a very old kit (but still comparable to modern MG, tho). But Ver Ka is not a bad kit absolutely, it's a good choice if you already own the 2.0.

The only thing I don't like about this kit is that there is no forward popout for the shoulder, it only hinges outwards like a door. Makes it annoying to do a lot of poses, like swinging the shield out front or properly gripping the rifle with two hands. This is the only oversight I can think of, honestly. A little 15 degree forward rotation would have made a huge difference in poseability. The 2.0 could do this, I believe. It's just weird because they actually have an upwards swinging hinge to make the arm go upwards, which I have honestly never found a use for with any kit outside of a "final shot" pose with the RX-78. As far as not having an ABS inner frame - especially after having built some other 2.0s, notably the Zaku II and the RX-78, this is actually points in favor of the 2.0 in my mind. I am worried about a polystyrene inner frame being a break/fall risk, especially with no polycaps.

To me it seems he mixed Classic Zeta with the Zeta Wave Shooter design. I know Katoki said he wanted it to be more anime accurate but in the anime Zeta was a bit more stout.

The only thing I don't like aesthetic wise is the derpy looking chest. Originally I wasn't interested in this kit at all but after watching the live build and review I think I'll get it. I've had the 2.0 for years but still haven't built it yet.

Objectively BEST probably MGEX Unicorn Ver.Ka. But the price is hard to swallow. Alternatively either the Wing Zero EW, Sazabi, Hi-Nu/ Nu are good options! 👍

I built the 2.0 with a friend a while back, so hearing that the Ver Ka has a new frame peaks my interest since I buy kits mainly based on how the inner frame is like Is the ver ka frame a more interesting kit mechanically than the 2.0?

I definitely prefer the aesthetics on the 2.0 as well, the shape of the head along with the panel lines are what keep me leaning more towards it than the new ver. ka. It's a shame because the colors and engineering of the ver. ka are so nice.

Honestly I'm getting this for the color seperated eyes alone. This is something bandai should have been doing 10 years ago and are just now slowly trickling out with the barbatos, thunderbolt, f90, eclipse and some other MG and Full Mechanics I can't remember.

MGEX SF also has dedicated eyes parts, two of them in fact (gold and clear).

One takeaway for me is that the Ka sort of "loses" because it couldn't completely bury a 20 year old kit. BUT, the Ka is a gorgeous kit in its own right that I would love to own. So really, that 50/50 outlook on which is best is a testament to how great the 2.0 is rather than the Ka being bad in any way. You can't go wrong by buying either. Or both!

Hm... A couple observations: ( 0.) Thanks as always for the review.) 1) Overall, I'm impressed at the lengths they went to... sort of kind of mostly... mimic the look of the anime. titan133760 in the comments pointed out things like the small wings and "deeper chest armor," but for me it's the hands especially. 80s mecha always had honestly a kind of weird look to their hands: vague polygonal shapes for the hand guard and first thumb knuckle plus vague tubular shapes for the fingers. I'm not a big fan of that look honestly, but I do think the kit was surprisingly successful in recreating it. 2) I'm surprised at the lack of shoulder articulation. Not _disappointed,_ but surprised - from previews I guess I had gotten the impression that they managed to cram a forward-swivel joint into the white shoulder armor. It's hardly the end of the world, but it is, again, surprising. 3) I like that you can get the Wave Rider's leg sections more parallel than on the 1.0 and 2.0, but I was really hoping (based on the CGI transformation promo video Bandai released) the new transformation mechanisms would significantly reduce the height of the legs, make the shape of WR overall flatter and just a tad bit more believable. Doing so would be sacrilege, of course, especially since a major focus was recreating the anime look... but still. (Now I'm thinking on it, I wonder what it would look like if the thighs simply retracted into the calves. Just a big ol' empty space in the lower legs with rails that the knee and upper legs slide along... Hm...) 4) I'm again surprised that Bandai didn't include holding fingers without pegs in them. IIRC they've done so with every kit ever since moving to the swappable fingers system...... okay, no, dalong tells me I'm wrong, apparently they haven't included "non-pegged" holding fingers for some time now, since at least the MG GM Sniper II. -(Showing my Wing EW bias no shut up i'm not old you're old)-
