Might be too late as this video is 9 months old, but I had a similar issue with the sniper on my factory five (408 Windsor stroker). The IAC and idle was inconsistent. I also run the hyper spark setup. You have to go into advance settings and disable ignition advance when setting idle/IAC. Otherwise the ignition table is fighting you on adjustments. Once you get idle dialed in you can enable the ignition advance again. Good content, keep it coming!

The Hyperspark is a joke. My Hyperspark Distributor failed. I uninstalled it all and went back to carburetor.

Well, here it is, three years later and video is still helping diy'ers. I tried everything to fix high idle. Idled was ok until car was driven and then I would have to blip throttle to bring idle down. Frustrating. I tried the double wind spring trick. Resetting control unit and finally checked Iac. It was down to around zero. Sometimes 2. Adjusted as recommended and waalaaa. The fix for that problem is in, but it's always something with this Efi. I was driving thru Atlanta, downtown, and car just stopped. Cops called tow truck while I worked on it and eventually, after 25 minutes or so, it fired up. To this day not sure of what caused it and I'm always waiting for it to happen again. My pump is externally mounted, which is not good. Thx...

Set the idle manually with no fans or anything running and the idle air control valve blocked off with some tape. Turn the car off. Fire it back up and fine tune it. Then unblock the IAC.

If you need to just reset your TPS turn the ignition on but do not crank. Adjust your idle screw until the hand held reads zero. Open and close the throttle a couple of time's, let it set a few seconds then check the percentage on the hand held again. Get it to stay at zero every time you let off the throttle and it will be reset.

I blocked off my IAC with tape when setting my idle. One thing I did wrong on the first attempt is that I blocked off the IAC port when the engine was stone cold. In order to get the engine up to temp as fast as possible I adjusted the idle mixture screw to raise the rpm instead of being patient and waiting until I hit 160 degrees. Bad idea. I ended up leaning out a cylinder bank because the sniper had no clue what was going on in the engine with no valid IAC sensor data. I would recommend just running the engine out of tune until it is up to temp before you block off the IAC sensor with tape to set your idle speed. After you lock out the timing to 15 degrees just manually set the idle screw around 50 rpm lower than your optimal idle rpm you want and what you set the sniper to. When you uncover the IAC sensor it should make up the rpm difference and be within 10% or less which is what you want the IAC setting to be at.

Hey Zanes, first of all great video. I didn't see the initial videos and or the issue you had. My CJ5 Jeep has this Holley Sniper EFI but the issue I have is that my car will die at 35/45 minutes of driving around. It feels like something "heats" up or idles because I have to wait around 25 minutes to crank again and then i can drive around but it will die again so that's why I say its something that heats up and wont send the enough gas/power and the car dies. Everything is connected as it should and my mechanic has not find out any other issue than this system.. would you help? Calling this guys at Holley is like talking t o a wall.

Curious if you got your issue resolved. I’ve got the SNIPER BBD installed on a 258 in an AMC Eagle Wagon and my first starts and tuning had the same issue you are describing. Not sure if the CJ5 requires the same sniper as mine but I did quickly find my issue. When I installed the throttle body I had to remove the TPS just to get space enough to wrench the nuts down to mount it. When I put the TPS back on I installed it in the absolute opposite position that is came installed factory. So what I was seeing was the engine would start when cold perfectly, then at operating temp it started running terrible and it would not start at all if I shut it down and tried a restart. When I loosened off the screws for the TPS and moved it all the way the other direction…it resolved it. Hope you found the issue already but figured I’d share my experience. Cheers!

You have a fuel prssure reg on your car How can I instal fuel pressure regulator with gauge on sniper efi 550-516? How can I take out internal regulator out?
@ZanesGarage4 жыл бұрын
My regulator was from a previous setup and it was just easier to leave it on so it isn't needed. If you wanted to install one you just have to have an AN fuel line in, line out and a return line. And the Holley has to have the internal regulator and I haven't removed mine either so I wouldn't recommend that. Hope that helps!

The only issue I've had is the ECU on my sniper died from an unknown reason. I sent the unit back to Holley and they fixed it with no charge and haven't had an issue since. Everything else has just been from me learning how to tune and engine issues

Did you go into the screen and set the # lower and then turn the set screw. Did you take the ac setting to off in the wizard ?? My I C A is all over the place. I finally got it to come down but I had to turn off the A C setting. and put a fixed orifice pcv valve on it. It runs great until it gets hot on a long trip on a hot day. I have heat shielded fuel lines and put a 1 inch spacer . Still have problems. Any ideas

I have 427 small block ford motor, and want to know if I can give it a ruff lopping idle by just adjusting the idle. Or would that be bad for my engine?
@ZanesGarage4 жыл бұрын
Every engine likes to idle at a different rpm but lowering it can cause stalling issues and that could lead to oil pressure problems. Swapping the cam for something with more duration and lift and a better lobe separation angle will be your best bet. Sounds like an awesome engine though!

I cannot get Holley to answer their phone. I’m seeing two things on mine which maybe you would know. One doesn’t really affect driving, but my TPS stays at 0 no matter what. Drove it around the block so the throttle works. The other started during my second drive, The first drive around town went perfect no issues the second Drive went good for about 10 minutes then all of a sudden my AFR started going up to like 35% every time I tried to accelerate and the engine wanted to die.

Hello,what is your idle ignition advance? and how much vacuum engine is performing?
@ZanesGarage4 жыл бұрын
Hi I currently have the engine torn down so I can't go check but I believe my idle timing was around 16 or 18° with a total timing around 32°. As for my vacuum I'm not sure what it was with that Set up.

My IAC position is significantly different when the electric fan is running versus when its not (like a difference of about 10%). Do you tune your idle when its running or off? I've been having idle issues so i might set my IAC closer to the 2% at idle

Hi! My car dies when I put in gear. (Ford 302) My IAC is set to 0. Any ideia what could be ?

With hyper spark you need to "disable Idle Spark Control" to adjust the IAC

Hello, I had the Sniper EFI installed on my 1963 Thunderbird. The car has a stock 390FE motor. While the car runs fairly well, it tends to stall when first driving and stopped at a stop sign or traffic light, while applying gas pedal and attempting to move. Of course, this usually happens when I’m halfway into the roadway and there is on coming traffic. Any ideas why this might be occurring? Thank you, Buzz G.

I've got a similar thing happening on a mild sbc 350 with a manual trans. Once it is up to operating temp it seems to be fine but even then the idle will slow down when you push the clutch in at the stop sign and then pick up again to normal after a sputter. Let me know if you figure it out. Any ideas Zanes Garage ?

Engine is a Chevy 350 bored .030 over. The cam is a comp cams mother thumper cam which is arguably not the right cam for this setup but it works.

@AlQuam4 жыл бұрын
Why is your idle set so high? You should probably try to bring it down to 700-750rpm and see how it responds. My 350 with a more radical cam idles just fine at 700 with the sniper.
@ZanesGarage4 жыл бұрын
Well after taking this engine apart recently I discovered that the cam I thought was a zz4 cam was actually a comp thumpr cam. With that cam my engine just liked a higher idle. But yes, it was a bit high during this video.
@RodeoRanger Жыл бұрын
Adjusting idle speed on my Holley avenger carb takes 10 seconds. You don't need a computer or have to spend $2000.00 . A $15.00 Vacuum Gauge allows a perfect carb setup in 5 minutes.
