Sinopsis: Muar is a town steeped in history and rich culture, characterized by its unique blend of eclectic and classical architecture. Historically, it was a prominent center for Islamic teachings, with a number of madrasahs (Islamic religious schools) located on the outskirts of its townships. These centers played a significant role in the development of the traditional Malay dance and music genre known as Zapin, through the introduction of Arabic zaffin by imams and visiting Arab scholars and traders. The Malays who attended these schools later stylized, personalized and propagated the genre, resulting in the rich and diverse Zapin styles that are found in Muar today. The Langkahan Muar performance is a showcase of this cultural heritage, featuring a medley of five different Zapin styles from various parts of Muar. Carefully arranged and choreographed, it begins with Zapin Parit Sakai and ends with Zapin Lenga, the latter of which is considered the oldest form of Zapin in Johor. The performance also includes Zapin Ginjat/Dinjat, Zapin Pat Lipat, and Zapin Mahpom, and is accompanied by infamous and emblematic zapin songs such as Ya Ladan, Semerah Padi, Bunga Hutan, and Lancang Kuning. This performance is a choreographic reinterpretation of the essence of the traditional Malay performative style known as Main Zapin. It breaks down the boundaries between dancers-musicians, while celebrating the communal enjoyment and pure pleasure of Zapin play-performance.
