What I love about this sequence over the episodes with Vegeta is he's starts at 24,000 Dodoria, then he gets beat by Zarbon (heals and powers up), beats Zarbon, then gets beat up by Recoome, gets a bean (heals and powers up), he can see Goku's movements but he's not at Goku's 120,000 level yet, purposefully gets harmed, healed by Dende (powers up) … so by this point he's likely stronger than Goku as he landed BUT lower than Goku who is now healing and comes out to take on Frieza. It's an nice sequence of beat down come back beat down come back over and over that really gets across how Saiyan bodies follow the whole "That which does not kill you makes you stronger" mantra

@38kob3 жыл бұрын
yep. we get several great, subtle character moments for vegeta; excellent exposition and forward motion achieved through crisp, believable dialogue; pertinent references to the series' central lore; clever foreshadowing (vegeta's line that it's a shame zarbon doesn't have his scouter - ironically if he'd had it, zarbon would've known he could stomp vegeta after transforming, which would've removed all tension from the scene); and rock solid line-by-line writing in general. the fact that the conversation's dynamic is mirrored by the power struggle in the ensuing fight is just the cherry on top. i'd say this might well be the best-written scene in the entire franchise
@jeanlundi21412 жыл бұрын
Your comment is valid, but please don't "mwuah" at the end of anything. It's quite cringe.

@@38kob nailed it Jakob. You can do an entire deep dive about the pinpoint perfect story beats of the namek saga up into I’ll say when goku arrives. To me that is truly the pinnacle of the entire DB franchise from the first episode. As great as super saiyans are, everything before Goku arriving on namek (the pinnacle) is leagues beyond anything after.
@38kob2 жыл бұрын
@@TactileTherapy i agree, although i'm also really fond of the arrival of future trunks (specifically the revelation of his prophecy, and his parentage) up through...oh, say, cell absorbing no. 17. still some nice moments in the rest of the cell saga but nowhere near the level of intrigue and competing villainy of the android/early cell arcs. also love pretty much everything about the majin vegeta portion of the buu saga, though obviously after his suicide is wasted in order to continue lining toei's pockets things start getting absurdly messy...
@TactileTherapy2 жыл бұрын
@@38kob I would agree and say the Android saga is extremely underrated. In fact, it is just about the only saga I watch over and over nowadays because 17 and 18 have arguably the best character dynamics with the main cast I’ve seen in the entire show. There’s an element of nuance to them that shonen anime doesn’t often portray. Their presence is far from trope-like and their goals and interests and how they approach is also refreshing. I do like future trunks as well especially his forthrightness when compared to some of the idiotic decision-makingthe main cast are often associated with. Japanese Gotenks is my favorite dbz character and prolly the only thing that stands out to me in the entire Buu saga. That’s not to say I don’t like the Buu saga or majin vegeta but not nearly as much as other people. Also I believe Gotenks was a sort of return to form for toriyama and I can see it in the manga and the tone of the character
@TheAzulmagia3 жыл бұрын
Something I find kind of weird: in the manga, Zarbon tells Vegeta that Frieza is able to transform after he turns into his monster form, which is how Vegeta knows later. But no version of the anime ever includes that exchange between them despite him telling Frieza that he learned from Zarbon later on.
@38kob3 жыл бұрын
i think the anime writers made a wise move in removing it (it would disrupt the pitch-perfect momentum of the scene as it is here, and it's better for vegeta and the viewers to be surprised by the transformation later)...then forgot they'd made the change by the time the later scene came around =\
@ballzcorps51462 жыл бұрын
@@38kob I disagree, it makes Vegeta's loss to Zarbon more devastating. He's basically told he has zero chance of winning and Zarbon follows it up fantastically saying: "How do you hope to defeat the Master if you can't even beat me!!!". It's overwhelming.
@38kob2 жыл бұрын
@@ballzcorps5146 this scene has probably the best dialogue and momentum in the entire franchise, so above all else i'm much more interested in preserving that. also don't know why we the audience should be despairing for vegeta at this point, when we're just beginning to be seduced into rooting for him (a known villain) and want to believe he has a chance of at least complicating freeza's plans. his showdown with freeza is a more effective time to play that card, since by that point we have that much more reason to empathize with vegeta. this is one of dozens of scenes where i think the anime improves upon the manga, the only drawback is them forgetting the omission and creating a minor plothole later
@ballzcorps51462 жыл бұрын
@@38kob While I do agree, I don't think the point of Zarbon mentioning was to be despairing for Vegeta. But it was sort of a realization on his end that he wasn't anywhere NEAR the strength Frieza had. Zarbon saying it was the kicker, that cherry on top the shit sundae Vegeta was forced to shovel down. He's desperate to get immortality and even begs Krillin and Gohan to the point of promising to leave them in peace if they help him, it makes his team up makes more sense and why he hypes them up towards Frieza. He gets too big for his britches. If he fought Frieza and held his own without goading Frieza into transforming, we wouldn't truly feel how terrifying he is and how much of a miscalculation Vegeta truly made. It would feel more of an asspull that Dragon Ball is now mocked for. Thankfully Zarbon foreshadowing it helped make Vegeta's suffering feel more deserved despite the pity you feel for him by that point.
@38kob2 жыл бұрын
@@ballzcorps5146 the only thing i have to add at this point is that this is probably the only scene in the entire franchise where the (really subtle!) momentum and power dynamics of a conversation are mirrored precisely by the fight that ensues. it's just about perfect and i really do think the transformation reveal derails that flow, it's clear to me its removal was no mistake

As french We were lucky enough to have a very good voice actor for Vegeta and we kept the music and sound effects from the original Japanese version and I'm very happy about it because I grew up with it. When I think of the version that Americans had to watch with dark techno rock and some really bad times, I feel sorry for them
@Megrez-Alberich4 ай бұрын
Meh... Yes, the voice actors are very good, I'll give you that (even though I don't like Patrick Borg as adult Gokû). Yes', at least the French dub kept the original score by Shunsuke Kikuchi. But appart from that, boy was the French version of the show atrocious!! Heavy censorship, ridiculous name changes (Piccolo renamed Satan Petit-Coeur, seriously?), vomit inducing openings (as soon as Arianne started to sing "Dragon Ball Z, Z, Z, le gentil Sangohan ♫", it made me want to pierce my eardrums!), and so on and so forth. The awfulness of the old French dub is the reason why I started to look for bootleg copies of the Japanese VHS tapes in the early 90s. That being said, the French dub is still vastly superior to the US dub. Which is not really something to brag about, mind you, seeing as the FUNI dub is probably one of the worst - if not *THE* worst - American dubs of an anime.
DBZ’s BGM is incomparable, one of the best ever. but GT’s is perfection in its own right, and just as good. a kikuchi score would’ve felt so awkward for that show.

The very first line from Zarbon really shows how overly reliant on Scouters the Frieza force are. Zarbon Can't find a village without a scouter reliably and he can't sense energy. What was he expecting if Vegeta didn't show up? He was flying around blind.
@thedawsonator16285 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it was Toriyama's goal with this sort of thing, the scouters weren't accurate things and rather outdated and unreliable. Consider that Raditz scouter broke at a reading of about 22000 and that Frieza's broke at Vegeta contesting his 1st form. I can't be sure about the Japanese but I'm sure the english explains that Goku raised his power so fast and lowered it with each move that the scouter did not detect it. Also that Goku's moves were so fast it looked like he was a ghost.
@LennoxLewis86 Жыл бұрын
I’m late to the party but scouters break due to system overload, not because of too high of a power level. When someone powers up and the scouter is trying to process the climb in power level, the scouter simply overheats and explodes. Can happen at PL 1,000 or PL 100,000,000. Doesn’t matter.
I always love those 2 sound effects at 2:20 when Zarbon extends his hand out and grasps it with the other.

At this time he has no allies, and just wants to kill everyone that stands in his way, become immortal and rule the galaxy. Still a villain here.
@KrackHead12319 жыл бұрын
Honestly I think he became a 100% good guy when he sacrificed his life in an attempt to kill majin buu. Looking back on the events of planet namek he was never a good guy and even during the android/cell saga he was still an evil bastard. Its a very interesting show when u look at the whole series including dragon ball. I'm referencing the Japanese version, I don't acknowledge the English version, In my opinion its straight garbage. Its not a black and white show. Even goku whos supposed to be the hero of the show is not exactly superman, hes kinda selfish.All he cares about is fighting strong opponents and in dragon ball when goku was fighting piccolo jr. kami said something like "The fate of the earth doesn't seem that important to goku" Goku through out the series was saving earth almost inadvertently.
@TheFLAMEXD9 жыл бұрын
Bobby T That's where you're wrong, Goku isn't selfish. He does care about fighting strong opponents but he also cares about protecting the ones he cares about. If he didn't, he wouldn't fight. And Vegeta also wants to fight string opponents too. They're BOTH Saiyans. Goku loves his family and friends. Vegeta loves his family and friends.

My point is its not that black and white. Maybe goku loves his family but its not for certain.
