I just love the fact that every Servant that meets Archer is absolutely baffled by his existence.

The VN really strikes that point home. My only problem with the anime version is that Archer doesn't have the same mysteriousness that he has in the VN. You see him with his bow in like every action scene, including this one. This scene in particular I think is better when he doesn't bring it out because that's what baffles Lancer the most ... that an Archer could be strong enough to survive his onslaught without using his bow.

@@GriFFonRec4 I don't think that part is really the surprising part for Archer? There do exists archer heroes that didn't fight with their bow. Teucer from greek mythology for example fought with a Spear after Zeus broke his bow. What's really surprising is his bizzare arsenal and skillset. He wields CHINESE swords, shoots a EUROPEAN bow, wears a HOLY(Christian) Mantle and then pulls out a GREEK Shield. And when Lancer calls out his lack of pride under the impression that he was a Knight (notice how everyone refers to Archer as "Red Knight"?), Archer basically responds with "I'm not, though." What the hell is anyone supposed to make of that?!

@@lackusshock I don't doubt your history, but for the scope of the VN I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be odd that most fights you see Archer in up to this point are melee fights. Also, like Lancer points out, what kind of archer has an indestructible shield. All I'm saying is the anime shows off his bow too much. In this fight he busts it out in CQB while doing anime flips. In the VN, that is a death sentence; if at any point he didn't have swords to defend himself with, his head would be cut off or his heart pierced. Even in Hollow/Ataraxia, he loses to Saber/Shirou because he found himself favoring the bow too much. If he had been like he was now, he would've been ready for their one and only counter attack.

@GriFFonRec4 Well you have to see that in Hollow Ataraxia, his tactic with the Bow defeated Shirou and Saber a lot. Only after „Shirou“ understood the time loop was he able to see Archer

Archer clearly lost with the Shield of No Loss (he was very wounded while Lancer was fine) and the Lance of Sure Hit did not hit. Both of them failed to do their job.

@@Sir-Cumference Aias actually protected it's weilder from the attack while gae bolg didn't managed to kill the opponent. So aias did it's job while gae bolg didn't.

Hang on. In UBW 2014, Archer said "Unfortunately, I am devoid of pride." but here at 4:35 it says "fortunately"... I listened, and they both say the same thing, so which translation is correct?

Old comment but I'll explain anyways. During this line, Archer says "あいにく ainiku" which literally translates to "Unfortunately". But in this context, he means "Unfortunately for you" and "Fortunately for me". So the translation can work both ways.

He IS. Archer is struggling to keep up with Lancer here. Lancer has the advantage against him on almost every level. So what do you do? You make use of your wits, resources and play dirty. Frankly, I'm surprised that Archer didn't just trace the Caladbolg to invoke Cu's geas.

The anime basically made it look like Cú was still going easy on Archer, when in fact based on the video, while he was faster, stronger, and basically superior, he was struggling to even land a deadly blow on Archer.

The only way Archer can work around Lancer's offensive advantage is by baiting him into openings that he can at least manage, even if he couldn't avoid. It's right there in the text. In their first meeting, it was an even duel because Lancer was only there to scout the competition on Kirei's orders. If anything, Lancer could have slowly cut Archer to death, but Archer insulted his pride and gave him the one route with the highest degree of success which was even then, a gamble that resulted in Archer's tactical defeat but at the same time, a parting blow to Lancer's pride. One on one, Archer isn't a good fighter. He's outclassed by physically-inclined servants by a fair margin. What he excels at is exploiting avenues of victory that most of the recorded Heroes of the Throne would balk at.

@@Sizdothyx well he did dominate him, sure everyone agrees with that, but not to the point where he "dominated him while still going easy on him" like what he did in their first meeting. I mean Cú, the fastest servant with his fast attacks that even made Archer's hawk like eyes utterly useless in the fight, was basically going all out on the poor guy but still Archer, while barely with the use of tactics that he acquired as a veteran of countless battlefield, managed to block him. Note that it is mentioned in the text that Cú wasn't even going easy on the guy, he was just reluctant to use Gae Bulg's anti-army attack at first because of Rin. And Cú even stated that this wasn't even a fair fight since basically he was fighting a Bowman in close quarters; that it would only be fair if Archer was fighting in long range which is basically true since Archer couldn't even use Caladbolg II since he would get caught in the explosion. All in all, Cú is superior than Archer in terms of physical combat, heck I bet Archer would still have a hard time fighting Cú even if he is in long range since Cú's Geis would activate only if Caladbolg was to be wielded by an Ulster-born. But still the fact that Archer, while at a severe disadvantage, could still, while barely, block off all of Cú's deadly blow without even using his Noble Phantasm shows how NOT SEVERELY inferior he was. I'm just saying that people shouldn't really underestimate Archer too much just because he had a hard time against the fastest Heroic Spirit in a fight where he had a clear disadvantage.

Archer DID use UBW to project Rho Aiss, and well ... i guess Cu, was just sort of ... pissed off enough, and decided not to mess with the *bowman* who produced a shield capable of halting the Gae Bolg

Archer is a little bit hard to read. When archer says that he takes the best path to win he implies that he is still working for rin. Even though he now is not her servant. So after the fight lancer understands that archer is with him too.

Their dialogue exchange made it obvious that Lancer realized Archer was playing Medea. But also using UBW would have been pointless. Protection from Arrows B makes using projectiles of any kind useless against Cu. Archer only lasted as long as he did because he fought a Cu who was holding back significantly before. And now against one who wasn't it was taking everything he had to not get killed and even then Cu wasn't absolutely trying his hardest to kill him.
