The Youngest Wonderkid Ever

There are wonderkids all over football / soccer in todays world, but what is the true definition? I’m asking because I want to know if it’s possible to be too young to be a wonderkid in the first place. Like for example, is 13 years old too young to even make it onto most of these lists. Da’vian Kimbrough has done what most of us dream of growing up, before growing up, he signed a professional contract at just 13.
I think that qualifies him as a wonderkid. He was the MVP at the world’s best U13 tournament so maybe that just qualifies Kimbrough as THE wonderkid. Regardless, it’s a crazy decision for Sacramento Republic to make to sign someone who is just entering high school, so this video is the story of how and why it happened.
Much Love,
The Zealand

I think one thing that is a little underrated is that Sacramento is not a bad team by any means. They currently are in a fight to win the shield, have made the playoffs all but one year in their 10+ year existence, and made the US Open Cup finals last year. Their academy system is arguably better than some MLS academies as well, and have produced quite a few players that have become regulars in the USL-C and some MLS teams. They know how to recruit, train and develop youth. Not sure he is going to get any playing time this year unless the team is up by a couple of goals late and they give him 10' off the bench to cement his name in record books, but maybe next year, especially in pre-season friendlies, he might get some minutes. Would be interesting to see how opposing team veteran journeyman react to playing against someone the same age as their own kids.

13 is really too young to say whether someone is truly talented or just a physical specimen. Would be nice for both the kid and the USMNT, but it does give shades of Freddy Adu, Bojan Krkic, Youssoufa Moukoko, or Alen Halilovic

And he could as easily become an Iker Muniain where he has a very long career, but his prime development was altered by injury to where he never turns out to be Lionel Messi. As in Iker is still active at Athletic Bilbao but he's going to 31 and barring any Aritz Aduriz kind of trajectory won't ever live up to the hype that reached the maximum some 14-15 years ago when he was knocking on the La Liga roster door. Edit: Iker Muniain could very easily end up in the most prolific La Liga appearance holders of all time and despite this fall well short of what was originally expected from him.

I wish him the best and hope he makes it. The truth is though, that it's rather seldom it's the top talents at these ages that actually make it, whether the reason being the pressure, injuries, not being able to live the professional life with all the sacrifices that requires, which is especially hard for teens or other things. For each Messi of the u13-u17 that makes it there are several that don't. It's why i always say enjoy a player like Larmine Yamal now. It's one knee injury or ankle injury and he might never be the same again.

For the people saying he’s not 13 coz he is 5’10’’, i was 6’2’’ when I was 13 (188cm for Europeans) and I had facial hair (I shaved it however). The kid looks young, he is just phisically one step above his opposition and that is great for his own development since he will be training against a more mature opposition starting at a very early age. Hopefully he won’t be another minala/Freddy adu!

But the whole reason he's miles ahead is his physical aspect. in 5 years there is no advantage physically and than we see what happens with most of these youngsters netting in these stats. Most European topclubs scout the smaller players that get the monster stats in youth rankings, for exactly that reason.

Damien sounds amazing! My concern is that I wouldn't want him to be exploited by a club or media or national federation who want to profit off hyping him as the youngest ever etc. while disregarding his long-term health, both physical and mental. USA Soccer must be salivating at the idea of him playing at a home World Cup. I guess he would be 16 then, which is not entirely unheard of. Damien playing against full grown adults is not the best idea at 13-16 in my opinion. Even if skill wise he is good enough, the injury potential not just from player contact, but also from overuse injuries is pretty high. We don't want him burnt out by the time he's 20. And what about the psychological and emotional aspects? How is he going to have friends on a team when the next youngest player is five years older? And how do grown men feel when a 13-year-old plays better than they do? How will they treat him? How will the opposition treat him? I have never seen this aspect of wonder kid athletes even acknowledged, let alone investigated. How many kids who have been labeled as "the next Messi" live up to their potential? I honestly do not know, but would be interested to find out. The sport I follow most closely is gymnastics, and every Romanian girl in the last 40+ years who has ever been labeled "the next Nadia" has not even come close often due to injuries. It tends to have negative effects on their mental health because of the weight of unrealistic expectations. After they retire, they have to live with the weight of everybody's unrealistic and unjustified disappointment in addition to the naturally awful feelings most retiring athletes experience. I'm very glad you're keeping an eye out for Damien. Thank you for the video and have a nice weekend! 😎

Its absolutely impossible to predict players at such a young age. I played against both Copenhagen’s academy and Vitesse’s academy when I was a kid. We were an amateur English U16s team and we beat Copenhagen and drew with Vitesse…none of the players were particularly special at that age. Can I ask (from a European perspective), what is the point in a second or third division in a closed league format? In other countries you compete at lower levels to try and win promotion to play with the big teams, but what are they playing for in the second division? Is it literally just a shop window where you play well with the hope of getting a move?
@valornash8463
@valornash8463 8 ай бұрын
These teams have rabid fan bases. Sac had 2000 fans fly cross country 3000 miles to see them play in the Open Cup final in Orlando. I would love my club to be able to go up with promotion.. but I'll still support my club regardless of what division is possible.

@@valornash8463 Sorry the question wasn't meant to come across as mocking, I was just curious as the fixed leagues just seem strange to an outsider (and frustrating for those who follow non-MLS teams I'm sure). Do they at least have like an FA Cup style competition where every league gets to partake?
@valornash8463

@@ChiChiChutes No worries! It is frustrating; my team is Sacramento Republic, and we were supposed to be in MLS, but our investor backed out because he didn't want to pay the $500 million fee it costs to join MLS, plus the cost for the required new stadium. So we're stuck. We do have an FA Cup style tournament, it's the US Open Cup and it's the oldest running competition in the US for ANY sport. It's open for amateur teams all the way to MLS, same as the FA Cup. And, just last season, Sacramento actually made the final by knocking out 3 MLS teams (San Jose, Kansas City, and the LA Galaxy).

As a die hard fan of Sacramento Republic, some context here: he will very likely not start for us for 2-3 years. This move is to ward off MLS teams from buying him out, which USL teams have no protection from.

Ladies and gentlemen and MLS-snobs, THIS IS WHY USL EXISTING AND MLS NOT STEPPING ON THEIR TOES GOING INOT USL SIZED MARKETS IS IMPORTANT!!! MNP is cool and has already shown that itself to be good. However, a satellite club that is only a pro academy will never be as good as a proper first team for a kid to grow in to. This is why we need leagues like USL in cities with populations lesser than that of what MLS wants to touch. USMNT is missing so many possible players cause kids in so many cities only have youth football till U13, and then it's just high school, this is USL1 markets, or they have up to U19 academy but the academy might have a real backing so nobody pays attention.
