Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons in Escalante, Utah are unique. The banding in the sandstone in Zebra is not like many other slots. The colors are different and nature's design is one of a kind.
Although the canyon is very short it has a lot to offer to the photographer. A crow has taken up residence and made quite a mess down one wall but we did not find it in the way. Another hiker who was there early in the morning commented on the racket the bird was making.
Since this slot is so short and you return the way back down the canyon it may be a good idea to travel in and out in small groups. In other words take turns so everyone can enjoy and photograph. There is little to no room in this narrow gulch.
Tunnel is not that photogenic. It is just like the name, more of a tunnel with little light. It has a spooky feel to it. There was waste deep water when I was there and it was very cold. The trip is only a few hundred feet long. I found it to be quite fun.
One thing that stands out about this trip is the walk to and from. It is a very pretty hike. Another thing I found interesting was the Moki marbles or balls that litter the wash.

Hey Dana this is a great video I love it. ~ 7 years ago I took a random trip down to Escalante and hiked Peek-A-Boo canyon with my now wife & best friend. I became addicted to the Utah desert & have now become a avid canyoneer. Zebra is a great canyon & I love the side trip to Tunnel Gulch. Sure is amazing the beauty and power of nature.

Hey, we went to Escalante. Kinda got lost, bring salt tabs for cramps if your afraid of your legs cramping. Saved me big time, it’s beautiful place. It’s a must see for sure. We repelled into the canyon, we didn’t have to climb out. It’s drops a few times and you need rope and repelling gear. Then hike your way out. Sooooooo awesome!!

Thank you. Well you need to turn sideways a few times. It's well traveled and I never have come across anyone that was stuck for more than a few days! I am of course kidding. Just go as far as you are comfortable. My rule of thumb, if I suck my belly in for more than a minute or two I turn around. You can get to the best of it no problem. Take care, safe travel.

If you are an inexperienced hiker and you want confidence, try an iPhone equipped with Bad Elf or some other GPS/GLONAS chip set. In conjunction with Gaia Topo maps which are downloaded beforehand, you cannot get lost. Some trails do have "unofficial" forks which can be frustrating but do not show up on the topo maps. Obviously deep within a slot canyon, reception will be hampered because you need a line of sight with the satellites. (3 minimum) Don't forget the potential for flash floods as Dana mentions, and high winds which require a tagelmust or some other head wrap to keep you from breathing in clay particles. I keep one in my pack. By the way, how's the Hole In The Rock road Dana? Can a Ford Escort do it or do I need a Jeep?
@danahollister4084
@danahollister4084 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips. Hole in the Rock road is usually pretty good for quite a ways. If you hit it after it has been graded you will be in luck. Kind of hit and miss in my experience. The ranger station in Escalante might have some good info for you. One thing for sure it is always a wash board. You can get to many nice canyons in your car. D

@danahollister4084
@danahollister4084 4 жыл бұрын
With laying it out on Google maps as the crow fly its 1.66 to the main canyon. From there less than a mile as the crow fly to both. I think walking to do both would be about 8 to 9 miles round trip. Plot it on the map and do the research. It's important that you have an idea of what is involved. It is not a difficult walk but for some it will feel a bit long. Other option is do one one day and the other an other day. Hope that helps. Safe travel.

Thank you. It is not far down Hole In The Rock Road. I would say normally a passenger car is fine. That does depend on the weather. It can be wash board. The kind that will rattled your teeth out. But normally an easy pretty short drive. Hope that helps. You can also check at the ranger station for current conditions.

No permit. You only really need one if you're going to be hunting in that area or fishing other than that everything is all to your heart's content the only places you need to watch out is if you're up in the mountains and you see signs that say no trespassing other than that you're fine
