My wife and I are starting out on this marvelous adventure. We are turning our living room into a conservatory. On the one side will be this very large aviary housing about three pairs of finches. Adjacent to that is a 180 gallon Amazon biotope aquarium. On the opposite side will be a library of historic and miscellaneous out of print books. BTW Great video ... Five years old and still has value.

I recently got two zebra finches with a cage (with all the essentials), a bag of food, a few millet sticks, some hay stuff for nesting, a nesting 'box' and a few treats. I unfortunately didn't get any calcium blocks or a bird bath because I didn't think it was very necessary, but now I will be sure to go back and grab some of that. Thanks for the information!

I'm getting Zebra Finches for the second time next week. I had them when I was a kid. I've been wanting to get them sooner, but things like living in a small apartment where pets weren't allowed and my mental condition held me back. Now that I live in a bigger apartment, where pets *are* allowed and I'm feeling better, I'm very much looking forward to welcoming them into my home (once again). :D

People seriously don't have anything to do except post rude comments. Please keep posting. I'm thinking of getting a couple - love the sound they make. P.S. I meant to mention, for drinking water I use this bottle usually used for watering rabbits (a whole lot smaller), a plastic bottle with the tip with a ball in it that the bird pushes up when it wants a drink. The drinking water is always "clean" for them now. When I got the bottle I was so shocked to see they knew how to use it. The bottle is sold in Wal*Mart & probably any pet store. LOL Judie (again) thank you for this very informative video!!!

I used to be a show stock Zebra Finch breeder. I see a lot of people making the mistake and buy square cages rather than a narrow and longer cage. The reason is so the birds can fly back and forth. In a square cage they tend to hope more. If you want to have healthy and fit birds,longer is better.

my finches loved cucumber ,when they had chicks in the nest , they would fly downstairs pick out the middle and fly back up stairs to the nest ,I left the back door open, by accident, in the kitchen , one time they must have come downstairs pecked out the middle of the cucumber and flown back upstairs again , I ended up with so many , I had to give them to any one and everyone, pet shop etc, fun pets , they would fly down and take food from my hand .

If there cage is small I would let them explore outside of the cage. But it has to be a bird safe room. I had a perfect sun room with lots of light and space for mine to fly and exercise without being messed with from other animals in my house. :) They will take time to figure out how to get back into there cage, but if there nest is in the cage they will return! On the male without tail feathers, he has gotten them plucked out by another bird or he is sick. Vet check in order if it was me. :)

what about the gravel? I thought they needed fine mineral gravel to digest their food? I am afraid of mites. what do you recommend as a preventative? years ago we used bird protectors which had a chemical in it and smelled a little like moth balls. Covering the cage is important at night and cage placement is very important to protect from drafts. love your big aviary cage. I am so afraid to let them out...but I see others do as well. great videos! thank you!!!
@esoRdeR9 жыл бұрын
For mites, you can use Avian Insect Liquidator. You can use it on the cage and accessories as well as the bird. I spray my babies with it every few months as a preventative.
@flogreen88189 жыл бұрын
Don't give them gravel it will kill them! Birds that eat feed whole like chickens, turkeys ,ducks ,pigeons, doves, etc, only need gravel but birds that break open their seed don't need it they digest their food just fine I can't remember what it does to kill them but you can Google it and find out😀

Hi!! Not an expert, but I do know that finches need to be in pairs or in a flock or they get depressed. They prefer quality time with other birds and don't like being handled by people. I heard that two females are fine, but two males might get aggressive with each other? Google search can bring up some things. Just Google the breed of finch you're curious about, or just finches in general, and you'll be able to find some overviews of the breed. Hope this helps! Have a great day and God bless you bunches.

Alivia Trobaugh yeah, I wouldn’t recommend them as they can seriously damage your bird’s feet. The grains of sand can get stuck in between their toes and irritate them.

Sandpaper or anything with very rough textures like grit and concrete is bad. Just keep in mind that not everything at a pet store is safe. There’s tons of stuff they sell that actually have seriously injured and killed animals.

@fantasticmrfox765410 жыл бұрын
Ok so the cage i saw in this vid would be the minimum space I would give for any bird. Getting them a cage this size would be ok for two birds if you want four I would buy a really large cage or put them in an avery like mine. Most finches will live with other birds as long as they are not too big. For breeding boxes you need one for every two finches.
