A zebra foal is kicked by another zebra in the Namib Desert. At the end Hartmann's mountain Zebra does a mud roll

I think with a newborn foal, the group was more nervous than usual. And with a jackal present when they first showed up, I suspect that this added to their group nervousness, making them more reactive and flighty. I watched this scene a good half dozen times at the time, and I think that's why the foal got kicked - I think the zebra still had the jackal on its mind and reacted before looking.

Before becoming hooked on watching these Live Streams I thought zebras were the best animals ever but I have since learned that they are very paranoid and the least little thing sends them over the edge

Awe...what a sweetie pie, look at those long back legs🥰 Looks like there might be a few more "expecting" female Zebras in the group.

There is at least one more due any day now, if she hasn't had it already. And then there's a third who looks like she might be a fair way into her 12 month pregnancy. She's the mother of the last foal born last year.

@@BellaBarossa Agree, there is at least 2 more expecting in the group.

Eh what a kick for a baby!

It looked more like a bump than a full-fledged kick. I know when I was working around horses, I was told if I had to pass behind a horse, I should stay close. That way, when the horse kicks, you're more likely to get bumped and less likely to be injured. The baby seemed to be fine afterward.

Zebras are behaving like a-holes here, which isn't something you often see. Usually, they work as a team at the pan. They're still ostracizing the dirty zebra, too.

Strange how it's the Hartmans zebra that rolls and the Birchills zebras don't.

If you watch zebras enough on this KZbin live -- you'll come to the conclusion that zebras can be MEAN and very "gassy". They are not "cute horsies" in striped PJs. Truly wild, wild animals and the baby will grow up to be just a tough!

This time I kept my eye on the mother of the foal and you can see she's a good mother, at 2:12 you can see how she runs towards her foal to protect her/him. The kick by the other zebra was just an accident because the foal walked behind this zebra and prey animals can get a big fright when something approaches them from behind.

The baby seemed pretty disoriented afterward, considering it walked straight through the water, startling the other zebras. But the mother is clearly attentive as she's seen chasing the others away from the baby then and kicking a bit herself.

Whenever there are zebras there will be drama. I don't think they are very smart compared any every other creature that comes to the waterhole.
