After watching you cut the zebra, I did the same to my plant today. I was so frustrated with it, no matter what I do the leaves kept turning brown, crispy & falling off. Short of throwing it away, I cut it just like you did and put the top part in water. I'll see if it develops roots 🤞and the bottom part left in the soil if it sprout new growths 🤞

I have just propogated my poppas one. He's not in the best health now and I had to realise that I was going to loose him one day soon 🥺💔 I only took one stem, will she grow more stems? I removed about 5 leaves so hopefully that's enough to grow some roots. I can't wait to plant her! She's now very special to me as the mother plant was one that poppa chose to have in his house ❤️❤️❤️

I transplanted it two weeks ago and it is growing gang busters. I think I’ll try propitiating it and put one or two outside under another taller plant. How did yours do outside?

Can the plant stay in water?? What type of soil does the plant need??
@mimosveta2 жыл бұрын
mine had aphids too, but small. they were impossible to get rid off, cause I couldn't really get between newer smaller leaves. it also had springtails, as they like most soil, and you can't treat them with anything as they simply jump out of the way. at some point, one spider moved in, and made a net covering entire pot, like a blanket, and he brought the springtail population down, they looked like starry night, net was riddled with them. I don't know what then happened to that spider, but he was gone, and they started to rise in numbers again, and the plant started to lose leaves like there's no tomorrow. so I cut her into small bits, each having a node, and cleared all the soil from the roots, and left her sit in soapy water for day or two, which would hopefully kill all the eggs of anything and then planted it back into the fresh soil, and stuck the bits with nodes in there too. it's been like two months at least since then. the rooted stems have grown some leaves, not as much as yours but bits with nodes are showing no life. I might pull them out soon, if they were going to live, they would show it by now it was in such a bad shape that cutting it into small bits was sensible as it had barely two, three leaves on the very top of it. I tried putting those into water, but leaves just dropped off by the time I pulled the roots out of the soapy water, so all that had remained, were bares stems, so i cut them up, it was like "well, at this point it is either dead, or I will have tons of small plants" none of the bits made any growth above the soil so far none of this happened as fast as you're saying, it was at least two months, probably more, and I'm still nowhere near you number of leaves, I have 5 leaves on two stems

Ecooil spray helps get into all the cracks and then you can spray it onto a sponge and squish it into the cracks and hopefully then wipe away the carcasses.

@ThatFoliageLife2 жыл бұрын
I have seen them kept in hydro before! I would imagine it would do well with that because they love water..! :)
@TarikVann2 жыл бұрын
You should look into getting a basic NAS like a synology 2 drive system. That will mean you alwasy have a backup if you set it up in a RAID configuration. As for not uploading for a month, ofcourse it can make you a little disillusioned to do all the hard work adn then lose it. That puts anyone off investing time into a video if they think it corrupting is a possibility. Take time to feel that emotion, accept its happened and then make a plan to mitigate it like having two files until you upload to youtube. Love your work, great editing and very professional. Audio sounds alot better. I have been scared to cut my one as it was my second ever plant and i've seen it through multiple aphid investations, lacking of sunlight, too much watering etc. So it's survived alot but because of those mistakes it has been getting leggy (same as your story) and so it needs to be cut and the soil replaced with new soil (it has been about 7 years in the same soil). So thank you for taking the dive and giving me the confidence to do the same.

How's your zebra plant going? And thanks for the tips. :)

@@ThatFoliageLife I cut it and did exactly as you did but then went away for a month and the person I had looking after it didn't really do what was required and the water got mucky. As for the stems in the soil they haven't grown back yet, but I think I need to have it in the sun more, it has been kept moist, but it's winter here in Australia and I was away, so no doubt it was sub 10°c alot. Hopefully I can save it and have a much more luscious plant.

Great video! I was also tired of the long stamps without leafs. I have done exactly the same thing you did, and the stamps with leafs in the vase are "sad" after 1 day already. The stamps are already thin so not sure if cutting them shorter will help (like it helped your stamps). What exactly do you mean with showering? Is it spraying + giving normal water?

Are you still fertilizing like you did before you propogated it? I have read too much fertilizer is what can cause leaf drop and curling leaf...your thoughts on that?
@ThatFoliageLife2 жыл бұрын
You're not wrong! too much fertiliser for sure can cause leaf drop, such as when the fertiliser isn't diluted down enough, which means it burns the roots. I don't think that was my problem in this particular instance though.

I have had one of these “Zebra” plants for about a year now. It gives me fits. Some of it’s leaves develop brown places usually on the tip of the leaf. It drops leaves randomly. I cannot tell if I am watering too much or too little. When I first purchased this plant it did really well. It developed many “flowers” and stayed full and beautiful. I purchased this plant in July and it was beautiful but during the winter months it began to act weird. Developing brown crispy places on the leaves and dropping leaves. No bugs. What does this plant want??

So glad to have found you! Wow, love your experiment! My zebra plant is getting spindly and has lovely yellow “flowers” at the top of the stems. Question 1) Is it “safe” to cut off the tops (that have flowers/bracts) to propagate the cuttings in water? Question 2) I read that the flowers/bracts should be cut off after they wilt as otherwise the lower leaves would droop and drop off but my bracts still look lovely! So what do you advise? Technically, for the mother plant, new stems should sprout like yours! Thank you!
