i paid 100 CAD for 21-22 taxes in and it was overpriced even at that price. This is what happens when Upper Deck has zero competition.

So I work at a sports card store in Canada. The price is essentially set by the 2 major licensed distributors. The cost on 21/22 and 22/23 hobby has been about 80-90% on retail price since the Bedard hype. So your friendly neighborhood LCS is paying $148-ish for a $170 box of 22/23 Ice that absolutely no one wants and will go down to $125 soon just so they can get Bedard hobby….seriously

It all starts at the source. Sure distributors take a significant cut, but UD is the primary culprit. If they weren't, epack would sell out within weeks. The prices for product there would outcompete LCSs to oblivion.

You see the ole' thumb nail mark on a lot of chrome/foil products. It's like the cards get caught on the roller and they still put them in anyway whether it's Topps, Panini or UD. $175/box is absurd

Upper Deck butchered this product with the 21/22 version, and then doubled down and put out basically the same garbage with the 22/23 version.

Upper Deck really has FOMO when they made this and should be committed to the Contenders feel. Then again, nothing that UD will do to mimic Panini is going to work in the hockey market: the collector base is too crusty and not open to change

I opened my box yesterday and I was hesitant after watching. Fortunately I pulled the gold bubble hockey of Auston Matthews’s #25 so hopefully that pays for the box

The only product that hasn’t gone up so drastically is artifacts…maybe because there aren’t live bedard cards wearing Chicago’s jersey…but for 22-23 and no bedard this product shouldn’t be more than 100$ looks like a fun rip but an easier pass

Great video as always, definitely agree the set looks good and the on card autos are a rare touch these days, but these prices man! The average person is absolutely screwed if they want to open a box. Over $300 for a box of series one? Does this ever correct itself?

The horizontal ticket access suck. They look like they’ve been miss cut. It’s so lazy it’s just a copy of the regular ones, which I do like fwiw. Here’s an idea. Make the horizontal ones throwbacks to old ticket stubs. Anyone who’s over 30 knows what old concert and hockey tickets looked like. Make that and add a name and face. Come on, get a little creative. As presented those horizontals are lazy AF.
