Fun fact: What became the Sony Playstation was going to be the SEGA Neptune. After Nintendo passed on the CD drive for the Super Nintendo, Sony went to SEGA of America to see if they were interested, and they were. SoA didn't think the 32X would sate the thirst of American gamers (they were right) and begged SEGA of Japan to make a CD-based console, but SoJ said no. However, the groundwork had already been laid; Sony set up their Santa Monica studios and were all raring to go to make a console and games for SEGA... until they backed out. It was after SEGA of America dropping their plans with Sony did they say to themselves, "Hey, we sunk a lot of time and development into this console with help from the biggest gaming companies out there. So why don't we just enter the gaming market ourselves?" The rest is history.

Technically, the reason Link usually "never has his old gear" is because it's a new Link. Each new game is literally just a new trio of reincarnations of the same characters. EDIT: Also, the FMV cutscene for Zelda's Adventure reminds me of the ProJared review of Virtual Hydlide. Idk if you've seen the _three_ reviews he's done, but if you haven't, _DEW IT._
@karolkinsiewicz2253 Жыл бұрын
As someone who used to make KZbin Poops with CD-i Zelda Cutscenes back in middle school, this review was even more enjoyable to watch. Your YTP background (and how it bleeds into your content) is one of the several factors why I particularly liked this channel. That was a fantastic vid, Stu, entertaining and informative. You're doing god's work. Also, congrats on getting more subs lately.

Trying to look at this game's art critically instead of just making fun of it, there's lots of good here. You can tell the era these games are actually from since the painted backgrounds use the same technique you see on Genesis games for simple color animations. Look at the water and smoke in the background, it's a pallet being cycled. Based on the dithering, I think there was a process of down-sampling for the backgrounds since they only had so much of a color pallet to use. The animations, meanwhile, are really smooth, possibly animated on 1s but I'm not sure, and they're done at a lower color depth, possibly for length.

You've come full circle! It kind of broke my brain to see the cut scenes unaltered. All in all it's good to see you give it such an objective review. (it's far too easy to just rag on it after all). Also as a fellow Ys fan I can say Adol does lose his equipment a lot, but it's usually from being shipwrecked. I think from Ys 1 to 2 is the only time he didn't lose anything because it was a direct continuation.

The language on the scroll is clearly inspired by cuneiform, the written language of the ancient Sumerians which was later adapted for a variety of Bronze age languages in the near east. Modern scholars can actually read cuneiform, but I don't know if the cuneiform on the scroll means anything. Likely it's just gibberish in the style of cuneiform.

A fellow Ys fan! Adol keeps losing his stuff between games because he cannot be trusted on, or even near, a boat with how often the ships he uses sink. At least in Ys II, he keeps most of his equipment from the previous game, because I guess being magically shot into the air has a degree of equipment preservation you don't get on a boat.
@chaospoet11 ай бұрын
This might be the best explanation I have ever seen. Boats are Adol's kryptonite. You'd think a big bad would just make him fight on one in order to win. 😆

I would actually reccomend Ys if your goal is to clear up the backlog. The games are much shorter than your average JRPG, at least those in the bump and Ys 6 styles. I can say from personal experience that Ys 1 and 2 both take about 6-8 hours a piece, and Ys Origins takes about 15

Mostly it's a completely different link some centuries down the line, and as for Adol, the poor guy can't brush past a boat without it getting shipwrecked. That doesn't explain why he didn't have his gear in Ys 3 but I don't think the running gag was made yet. Maybe he sold all of his equipment for supplies.
