There's a trick to leveling up MUCH easier. Once you reach enough XP to level something up, skip it. Skip the second and the third. Then it won't level you up until you reach massive points. Beat a boss, then put the gem in the altar. It always gives you enough XP to reach your next possible level, so you can get thousands of XP, and level up a lot of things all at once. Game gets MUCH easier then.

with respect, I completely disagree, especially the clip at 5:37 you're referencing here; its only difficult if you don't understand the game. In the sequence shown, the character is under-powered for that moment in the game, and he also doesn't use the spells and buffs available. people just didn't "get" that this game is an rpg. they tend to not raise their levels optimally, and forget to use spells like extra jump or shield to make the combat/navigation easier. sure, the game can be hard if you don't know what you're doing or if you don't bother to learn the game. but its by no means a "difficult" game, especially by NES standards.
