I didn't even realize that Unity had such a bad reputation, all I ever heard about was how historically accurate it was. I was always interested in the games from the perspective of wanting more detailed open worlds to explore, and the idea that these games are essentially detailed open worlds depicting a particular cross section of earth at a particular time in real history was appealing to me. I think a big part of what makes games like GTA so appealing is that while there is a central story, you can do so many things and explore so freely that it does just feel like a life simulator, a truly open world first game. I think the AC games should push more towards that, because i think the whole "i just wanna explore this cool world" thing is probably pretty common. I also think exploration being a more core tenant of what Zelda is is also part of why that series is less controversial. Exploration is something a lot of people want to do in video games, because it often sucks in the modern real world.
