Zelensky hails 'historic day' as Ukraine retakes Kherson after Russia flees

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said special units of the armed forces were already in the southern city of Kherson following Russia's withdrawal and described the moment as "historic".
Joyous residents welcomed troops in the city centre after Russia abandoned the only regional capital it had captured since its invasion in February
"Today is a historic day. We are getting the south of the country back, we are getting Kherson back," Zelenskiy said in an evening video address.

Russians left because: 1. Man power shortages. 2. The Dnipro river is a much better defensive line. The Ukrainians will have a hard time crossing that river without sacrificing lots of equipment and lives. 3. Ukrainians were blowing up the 2 bridges that were helping supply Russians with food, medicine, and equipment and the Russians wanted to have multiple roads and ways to get equipment to their men instead of having to be sitting ducks on two bridges backed up with traffic getting hit with Himars. I think celebration is natural for people living under military occupation for so long. Ukrainian military knows the implications of the enemy giving up land without a fight. They literally stated this in a press conference not that long ago. The Ukrainian military knows that the place is booby-trapped, zeroed, and that there are still Russian soldiers there. Zelensky knows that too. The threat of nuclear attack is a joke. Putin and those in his government have been nuclear saber-rattling since the Russian army was humiliated in Kyiv. Personally, I don't think nukes are going to be dropped. He's just puffing up his chest and trying to be scary.

Retaking the city means nothing if Ukrainians don't secure the Nova Kakhovka dam upstream from the city, if destroyed it will flood the city. Just today, explosions were set off and damaging the dam; Ukrainian Engineers need to go to the dam and see what damage has been done and repair any if there is and an artillery unit to counter the russian and a missile defense system to protect the dam
