Oh, interesting! So they were planning on taking the "turns you into a Fairy" idea from Zelda II into the third dimension, eh? I'm kind of imagining how this might have been used. In Zelda II, you could fly, making certain paths passable that wouldn't have been because of a sudden steep rise; here, I can see that being used, as well as perhaps using it to slow your descent so you don't take fall damage. In Zelda II, you could go through locked doors without using a key; certain 3D Zeldas wouldn't be able to use that, exactly, as the locking mechanisms aren't accessed through holes in the door, but through external hardware, so perhaps a Fairified Link could pick locks, or certain rooms could be connected through small holes in the wall. And there might be other applications.

Feature bloat and time constraints, for the most part. As neat as the six spells would have been, they were clearly struggling against time at the end. It's why about... 5 enemies in the game react to Ice Arrows, now quadruple that for special reactions to Wind/Shadow/Spirit Arrows. Turning into Navi could have been entirely broken, we have nothing but a text description on how that would have worked. The Shadow Medallion is actually the function of the Stone Mask, so I guess that was probably done but lacked real use in the final game. Light Medallion was some kind of attack, as was the Ice Medallion. I could understand why some of this stuff had to be streamlined in order to make a more cohesive whole.

Should have had the bow junctioned to L, and holding L and a rune with C could have worked to combine them with arrows, so that you could use it as a item with C to do a special or area of effect type of thing when not using your bow but still use that medallion with the bow right after on the fly. I see that as workable and not overly complicated. As it is though, that ship has long sailed and we're in a much different time for zelda where we can change our bows and weapons with the D pad, and runes are fundamentally ingrained in all aspects of what's happening and are foundational to undertaking anything freely in the game. I often wonder if going back to an inventory is worth it anymore, and the absence of some of the coolest gadgets like the Hookshot or the gust jar or things like that have any place in zelda anymore is kinda still makes it seem they're losing something in the new way. It'd be funny if that dragon "statue" south of the dueling peaks came to life. It's big enough and has the same architecture design to be a divine beast. There's a npc that also mentions a dragon split the peak in half and the hole in hebra peak's side was also made by an irrant divine beast (creating a champion might've insisted it was one of the four we know, I can't remember). I actually ran straight from hebra peak and to the other side of the map to see the potential position of where a divine beast would've fired from...and ended up near dueling peaks; though it's still possible it shot from the top of mt lanayru. It just seems very convinient that a dragon "statue" is mostly buried within the same peak a dragon was said to of split in half, and possibly fired from. I hope they don't forget that it exists and make use with it during the story. It definately seems older than the other divine beasts.

Shadow of the Colossus was originally going to have way more boss fights than in the final game, so it's cool how Ocarina ended up being bigger than it was originally planned.

I think it would be kind of cool to see these ideas come back in some way in the future, in particular the last three ideas: The whole "Ganon's castle being the whole game" thing could work for a spin-off; would like to see the return of multiple magic & arrow types outside of Fire, Ice, Lightning, and Light; the cute animations of Link training in various ways to upgrade his stats.

Sunken Hyrule is one of my favorite areas in all the series too just for the vibes it gives. The whole area is like a haunted castle. Even the music is muted and “dead.” It would’ve been great to have gotten more content in this cartoon fantasy Hyrule.

Unused content from the first Monster Hunter game is pretty crazy. It’s always cool to see how developers were thinking when designing a game

Nice timing on this video, as I'm currently replaying OoT on the Switch. I just got to the entrance of the shadow temple today, and was thinking to myself about that fire medallion symbol on the floor.

Even way before I was aware of this unused content, I invented something very similar, but called it dark arrows. It’s basically like Prime 2 Echoes. Dark arrows are effective against light creatures. My Zelda idea also brought back the concept of a dark world and the return of time and masks in Majora’s Mask. It’s very ambitious. Based on the 3rd adventure of the Hero of Time.

Here's what I think they should do for the Zelda series over the next 5-10 years: instead of just designing new games every few years, they should remaster games like OOT and WW and include all this cut content. Remastered remakes are always awesome, but including a bunch of cut content along with that would breathe so much new life into these great games AND give the developers extra time to come up with ideas for totally new games in the future. It's a total win-win and I wish there was some kind of petition we could all sign that would act as the catalyst for this type of thing to happen.

i would love to see a more item and magic focused game in the series, similar to LTTP with it's arsenal of items. The magical arrows and various spells make it seem more like a DnD adventure than a normal Zelda game. I also think that having such a large variety of spells could make for some interesting combos!
@marhawkman3033 жыл бұрын
heh, go full Metroidvania? :D it could work. :D
@gagamer72513 жыл бұрын
@@marhawkman303 maybe not a full metroidvania, more along the lines of BOTW's open world with the exploration and wide open areas for shenanigans, but with more dungeons and caves like LTTP for more combat focused areas. And do away with shrines, there are far too many, and 80% of them you go to once, and never again.

I still think to this day that OoT is a masterpiece, but at the same time is only a fraction of the game they were planning. My favourite cut and scrapped content is OoT related, like the forest we saw in older screens with a Poe and Link with the bow, the Castle Town made with real polygons, the sword beam, the screens with a twilight in the desert, all the Link's combat animations that were cut etc. When you read about OoT ideas that were scrapped you realize there were so many of them that to this day they're still using them. For example Ice and Wind dungeons and sword combat when mounted in Zelda TP, the masks giving abilities (yes they were planning that for OoT) to Zelda MM, a sword strike that begins with Link pointing out the sword tip to the sky (Zelda SS); the ability to cut down trees and to catch and tame wild horses (Zelda BotW)... All these ideas were planned for Zelda OoT. Just imagine what game it was going to be. Probably hardware limitations, time constraints and the change from 64MB magnetic disk to 32MB cartridge made all this impossible.
@Flaris3 жыл бұрын
I think the last one makes a fair point. Not every idea scrapped was better off in the game. Sometimes things get cut and the game is better for it. I can't even imagine that game without Hyrule Field and the huge open space. It just helped make it such a classic game.
@BloodScorchedSun Жыл бұрын
Damn we really dodged a bullet with that last one. Also, the fairies watching Link work out just furthers some other theories.
@Kinosho_Kawakami2 жыл бұрын
you know not everything that was dropped in the final version is due to time constraint. sometimes things were just bad or didn't fit the story or character and the fairy cutscenes prove this. they were silly, out of character for both Link and Great Fairies since they use magic to grant power. physically training Link would've looked stupid (as it does in those cutscenes) and would've made no sense and i'm glad Nintendo thought so too.

I would’ve loved to have seen that UFO in BoTW. I especially like how that game incorporated more technology into the Zelda world. The medallions concept would’ve bloated OOT so I understand why they were dropped. Similarly, I’m glad the whole game didn’t take place in Ganon’s castle, doing so would’ve given credence to the early skeptics of OOT who cynically dismissed the game as “Mario 64 with a sword”.

On the shadow magic making you invisible part, I wonder if they decided about the Gerudo hideout sneaking segment before scrapping that. Because if they had made it before, the shadow medallion would have made sneaking around to rescue to the carpenters a lot easier.

I agree that it's a good thing the Ganon's castle and painting idea wasn't used more in OoT, but I'd really love to see it explored in Zelda. Maybe a 2d one and with Yiga as the villain? He makes sense for the whole painting connection

I wonder if the cut yellow and black tunics from Ocarina of Time was Link under the effect of the light and shadow medallions, respectively. You'll notice that there's a fire arrow and a red, fire-resistant tunic. I wonder if Link, at one point, had six arrows and six tunics. EDIT: It's always amazing to see what gets cut from Zelda games. It's like "You could've made it even better!" just about every time.
@Tustin21213 жыл бұрын
There’s a Ocarina of Time mod now that transforms it into a (partially speculative, as accurate as possible) recreation of the Space World 97 demo, and has reimplemented some of those cut medallion and arrow ideas. ZFG, OoT speed runner, did a stream playing it that I watched here on KZbin, if anyone’s curious.
