I think projectile makes things way too easy and way too boring for the game. Every weapon that aims down sights should use projectile, and every weapon that hipfires should use hitscan to balance things off first of all. Then, all the projectile weapon categories should have perks and drawbacks that justify why each weapon is a viable option: -Assault rifles have low drop off damage even at longer ranges, which means you can hit someone from far away and each bullet will still do lots of damage, but the recoil is high, so if you want to be able to do that, you truly have to be a master at aiming, incentivizing good marksmanship; but in almost all cases, you're forced to tap fire at longer ranges, which limits your ability to beam people in half a second from farther away. -Sniper projectiles will travel faster, do large amounts of damage even at longer ranges, and always come with a scope by default. The drawback is that the reload takes forever, and it takes a long time in between each shot. It also gives away your position using the default scope due to glare, and also, the ammo count is much lower. Due to all these factors, it's an incredibly easy weapon to punish at closer ranges. You have to decide if you want to take up an entire inventory slot just for this. -SMGs fire very quickly, and have extremely low recoil. You can straight up beam someone from mid to long range because low recoil makes them so easy to hold and shoot; however, the fall off damage is incredibly high, meaning you basically tickle them at mid ranges. Even if you put scopes and 2x optics on SMGs, they really only shine at close range. -Shotguns are so short ranged that the projectile/hitscan debate has very little to do with them, but basically their role is exactly what it's always been; great at close range, terrible at long range. To make clear, each shotgun should have a long firing cycle, so that a missed shot can be punished hard; sort of like a high risk/high reward mechanism. If you take into account all of these factors, it justifies every single weapon type as a viable option, because right now everyone just picks one shotgun and one assault rifle, and no one ever picks up an SMG or pistol for the love of god; but with these new traits in mind, someone can easily justify carrying around one SMG for close to semi-mid range without the fear of getting punished by whiffing a shotgun blast, and a sniper for longer ranges. Or perhaps someone picks up an SMG because the assault rifle's recoil is too much for them at mid-range, and they'd prefer to use an SMG even though it's weaker at range simply because the recoil is so low. Assault rifles are still great, but you can't die in half a second by getting beamed because the recoil is so much higher and the projectile allows you to be more evasive as you flee, but if you tap fire and put on a 2x optic for example, then with a little bit of skill the assault rifle can still be your all-rounder weapon capable of autoing at close range, shooting in controlled bursts at mid range, and semi-auto tapping at long ranges.
