This great old song is not only part of the Soviet/Russian music legacy loved by many but also it became an unofficial anthem of people working in Russian space industry (astronauts as well of course).
Below is my take on translating the song's lyrics into English. It's not a literal translation and has slight improvisation here and there either. I did so because I thought word-for-word could ruin the mood and the beauty of the song. So the following text is made to convey the meaning and the mood of the song though it still stays quite close to the original lyrics. It's not intended to rhyme but it does sometimes. And I'm not so good at English as you might notice so I believe there are some mistakes. Anyhow I'm sure it's understandable and gives to those who don't speak Russian an idea what this song is about well enough!
So here we go...
The Earthmen - Grass By The House
Verse 1:
Earth is in the viewport, Earth is in the viewport
Earth in the viewport is clearly seen
Like a son misses his mother, like a son misses his mother
We yearn for the one and only Earth
And the stars above our heads, the stars above our heads
Are slightly closer but as always cold
And like when the sun is missing, just like in the time of an eclipse
We're waiting for the light, we're dreaming about Earth
Chorus:
And what we're dreaming of is not the roar of a spaceport
Not this icily cold and bluish view
What we're seeing is the grass by our houses
Oh this bright-green, this bright-green lively grass
Verse 2:
We're flying in the orbits, unbeaten murky tracks
Of the vast that's riddled with meteorites
Our risk and valor not in vain, the cosmic music in our veins
We feel it when we talk and when we work
When evening glow or day break comes the soft mist clasps the globe in its arms
And slowly lets go when it fades away
The son misses his mother, the son misses his mother
And the mother waits for her son and so does Earth
Chorus:.

This is an update to the description: In 2009, Roscosmos announced that this song will be the official anthem of the Russian cosmonauts and it's played every time when new space crew is about to board their bus which is driving them towards the launch site in Baikonur.

And rifhtfully so. Afterall, earth is our OUR world, not the harsch coldness of space. Earth is our mother. We, as a species, will and should always be thankful to our mother earth.

I just discovered this song after KZbin recommended a video of the "most surprising/uncommon instruments"in VoiceKids. For me last year two young girls from Russia took the song and did their own magic with it. (Other then the judges I loved the slow piano part so much). And oh wonder - it brought me to the original. I am not from Russia, but I learn the language at the moment and try to understand more of this fascinating country. Maybe a myth, maybe just a prejudice, but it is said that Russians have their own melancholy mood - maybe like a cosmic background radiation.. For me, you can feel it in this song.

And speaking of Yuri Gagarin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn21gXqcp92HrrM I rode with Yuri Gagarin alone above the Earth "You're far from home, now what's in this for you?" I'm an American but I'm falling in love with Russian music the first time I watched valeria kurnusukina katyusha. It's ironic because I'm a supporter of Germany as far as all the World Wars and such cuz I cannot stand the Bolsheviks for one thing but I love Russian culture and Russian people I think they are just about the strongest most beautiful people in the world. Is there a culture is definitely the most beautiful. I watched lera buskina and maniyza Villanova perform this song on Russian The Voice Kids it was absolutely wonderful. I love all good folk music and cultural songs of my fellow children of mother Europa. But I had to think that the Russians are my favorite. Especially Sophia fisencho. But Angelina Piper from Belarus is awesome. I love watching Eurovision in such especially the children's versions because it is so free of all the sexual perversion you find in American modern pop culture which I cannot stand. I do not like it when little 7th grade girls are trying to twerk it's disgusting. My mother is up there with yours so I send you my love and respect god and goddess bless you.

KZbin Bane I wanted to like your comment, especially when I read that you are a supporter of my country (Germany)... but than I read it again. Wtf, the World Wars are over, thank god, and I can‘t thank him enough that Germany lost and our country is free. Never heard of people supporting a country’s army like a football team 🤨 But I agree on Russian music 🎶 🇷🇺👍
