Couple of points, first Eiheiji and other Soto Zen monasteries are just for training young monks who typically spend only 2-4 years there. Of the 15,000 or so Soto Zen monks, 99% inherit their family temples, train for a few years at a monastery and then spend most of their time doing funerals and other rituals for their local parishioners. It's actually surprisingly hard to find opportunities to sit zazen in Japan, but there does appear to be a growing interest. Again, once they leave the training monastery most Soto Zen monks marry and have families. Looking at Eiheiji as typical of Japanese monks and their lives is misleading, any more than boot camp would tell you how the typical US marine spends their time.
@Peekingduck8 жыл бұрын
Glad someone pointed that out ! There used to be some groups in Kamakura that were pretty good and some smaller zen temples in the countryside take laymen students on certain days. If you are a layman you can stay at Eiheiji over a weekend and sit with some guidance but it's no where near as strict as in this clip then.

If anybody goes at this monastery and practice Buddhism Zen for at least one year,that person gonna change for good in incredible ways,believe me.And a lot of people need that to change perception and behave in family and society.This is for good.Hard, not a picnic day.Virtually you dont need money,once youre there you set free and take the path to enlightment.See you there.

To give into joy or sorrow is to give into dualism. There is a stillness within you that is your original nature. It is more pure and peaceful than human joy our emotions can bring. To practice zen is to strip the duality and falsehood of this reality and remind us of our true nature.

I do not follow the way of zen but it must be protected and sustained. The more diverse paths to spirituality there are, the higher the chance of liberation. Many people will disagree and try to find what they consider as the 'true' path. This will waste time. Let the path find you. It will be obvious when the opportunities present themselves. Drop the philosophies and sit. much love, Justin

One of the Buddha's main teachings is that you do not have to follow every instruction that he gives blindly and you can work out which works for you the best. These monks follow every instruction and this is why it is that strict. Do not worry, to be a Buddhist does not have to be that much work. :)

Free will is nothing but an illusion. Yes, I can make some choices about the food I eat, my bedtime,... but are those choices being made freely and independently of others? Definitely not. I am influenced by where I grew up and whom I grew up with. I am influenced by where I live now and whom I live there with. I am being manipulated constantly, and I am manipulating constantly, if I want it or not. I am manipulating you. Right at this very moment that you are reading this, I am manipulating you. I am manipulating you by telling you my opinion, since reading my opinion will probably cause a reaction within you.

Why do you count minutes and seconds spent in a monastery? What purpouse does it serve? Does it bring you closer to enlightenment or to death? You can tell me how many seconds have I been living in my 52 years? But what for?
@swamijoy7389 жыл бұрын
dtseringdorje These monasteries are for people who are dissatisfied with life in general--you don't know when you are ready for that--until you are. On certain spiritual levels time does not exist, but you will probably never experience that.

But true joy can only be experienced in the stillness of the mind. I agree with Eckhart Tolle in that Joy, Love and Peace are not neccesarily emotions for they arise beyond the mind, in the stillness of Being.

I feel the message that you want to convey, and I personally feel ambiguous about monastic tourism. However, I think saying that things simply are and are not seems like imposing an opinion. I feel if people want to see this as harassment, they are welcome to. There is no objective truth as such. Also I think the free will is product of ignorance and separation, but to embark on the path of Zen in this way is living freedom moment for moment. I think the question in the end is misplaced.

in buddhism your comment would be called a delusion. i study kadampa buddhism which is mahayana(the great vehicle). Zen buddhism is also mahayana the way to enlightenment to to liberate all living beings without exception.i think and really dont like passing judgement but i believe in computer terms you are called a troll someone who likes to get people all wound up unfortunatly for you but fortunatly for buddists your are a gem you help us practice patience which is key so thank you.

The repetitive and often compulsory daily tasks these monks perform are a part of zen. Even menial tasks become a form of meditation here. People fail to realize zen Buddhism is very different from traditional Indian/Tibetan Buddhism.
@robertdillon99895 жыл бұрын
No it isn’t . The exposure I’ve had in a Tibetan monastery and Zen are similar, but More military discipline reflective of Japanese culture in Zen. I have taken precepts in both... in the Buddhist world, as the Dharma spread , cultural aspects from the host countries it spread to inevitably became a part of the practices. Ie: the Bon religion on Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism on Chan/Zen etc. , These are natural cultural adaptations of pure culture/self. My guess is that the phenomenon in no way hinders realization/enlightenment etc.

I don't know. I'm not one to speak about zen. I'm barely 17. But something seems vaguely wrong about this level of discipline. Feel free to correct me and offer your opinion, but it seems more like regurgitating learned behaviors and routines than a true learning experience. I say again, feel free to correct me. I have much to learn.

These monks work so hard, wow! A small bowl of rice broth, a bit of vegetables and a glass of rice wine a day? Where do they get the needed callories, vitamines and minerals or protein? Hard work means burning fuel in great ammounts. They work like in prison or military, huh? Meditation, I understand, but poor diet and a toiler I have my doubts. Is this nirvana or annutara samyak sambodhi? You tell me!

Free will? Yeah, free will. You have a choice. A choice to get up at 4.00 A.M. or to sleep up to 12.00 A.M. a choice to drink tea or coffe, a choice to eat tuna salad or a hot dog, a choice to read a newspaper or to go for a walk, a choice to work or to take a catnup on your favourite sofa. So there is a free will. We choose and decide what to do by ourselves. You are not a robot or a machine. Some people even regulate their heartbit by their will. A zen master Seung Sahn for example, who fixed his heart in two weeks when doctors expected four months to fix his heart in a hospital. That is amazing attainment of free will!!!

This, to me, looks an incredibly repressive and masochistic way of living life. I cannot believe that this is Gautama Buddhas vision of how to live our lives. It is obsessive, dry and indicative of why Zen is dying in Japan. This sort of thing can only appeal to westerners who dream of becoming a part of their exotic fantasies about enlightenment. This sort of thing needs to be avoided at all costs.

Having an accent isn't the same as not speaking a language properly. If you don't speak a language properly, it means that you can't use the correct grammar or vocabulary often times. However, you can be perfectly fluent in a language and still have an accent. That is because getting rid of accents is much harder than learning to speak a language.

Nice, Budhist religion was carved out of ancient Indian ways of life. It was a time when existence of God was denied. So Budhisim came in to existence around 2500 yrs ago and has been practised in its various forms. But, philosophically Budhisim is an atheist philosophy where it reject existence of God and says you are god and emptiness is god and you become one with emptiness, which is meaning less. You cannot become God and we all know that and you don;t have to be a zen budhist to know that.

Sharanga Dhanva : a very unenlightened comment indeed! And I think you are creating your own history book! You can’t even spell Buddhist correctly as the final insult to those of us who practice... as if you are an authority on the subject matter? I would suggest to you something called “beginners mind”. Humble, open and hungry for wisdom and enlightenment of the true self and things as they are...as opposition your exhibit of “expert mind”, that of a egoist who is convinced they know all, and drink from only one stream of wisdom.... waiting to be “saved’ by an imaginary entity, relegated to following the heard of non-thinkers depending on books and letters...

To say a person is God is not atheism, its foolishness and its worst than not believing in God. IF you know the meaning of the word GOD, then you will not say. This is display of pure ignorance and nothing else. God is Omnipotent and Omnipresent. Are You ?
