Can you paint the canvas using black gesso instead of paint? General question, not just for this painting..... does using gesso make a difference to the feel (or the look) of the next layer?

No, as far as painting on gesso, there is no real difference, You can totally use it for you first layer. The only thing to be aware of is that if you have to cover mistakes with black paint, it may not match. Won't be a huge difference though so you can totally use it. 💝

With some brands of paint it can be streaky or see through and you may need to do two coats to get a matte black effect

just a question ..why dont you paint the whole background first instead of having to go around your objects?

It is totally different from painting to painting. Sometimes the background is painted in to help with the next layers, Which is more often the case. However, if it will interfere with how the other objects look, i.e, like when the objects need to be lighter as in things like skin tone or other things, you need to paint around those objects. 💜
