It's because she's the lead woman role for the series. Her character will be much bigger in the next movie. It was pretty obvious too. Like every time Peter left the school, they would always cut to Michelle watching him go with a curious look on her face. They weren't just going to leave her character like that lol. Also in a deleted scene, Michelle says "I don't know who Spiderman is, but I have my suspicions." I think it's obvious her character has a liking to Peter and suspects something and whatever it is, we will find out July 2019!
