I have a 7000-1. It works, but has not been overhauled, yet. I really like the Zenith Transoceanic radios. They are indeed, ‘built like tanks.’

When you were talking about "positive" ground with reference to the signal generator, I was just thinking there is no positive/negative when it comes to a sinewave and the signal should go to the Test Point and the shield still to ground, but it looks like it worked regardless. Another great video :)

Correct, ground is ground! It worked because modern test equipment is often not connected to ground (safety earth) but isolated.

Brilliant work: I have a preference to switch the AC input power supplies, and newer electronics there’s a tendency to have a cube (transformer) supplied on all the time and one switches the DC off at the device. This of course means that there is always some residual current pull from the mains, plus there is always a chance of fire with counterfeit power supplies. I usually plug my devices into a fused switchable computer strip. (Your home brew power supply is probably safer than commercially made devices)

I was awaiting this FM aligning video as it was something I didn't do with my TO 3000-1. Unfortunately my sig. gen. doesn´t do FM modulation but still the FM in my radio works very well. One last word of advice: do not grab this radio from the handle; this is very heavy piece of gear and the plastic in the antenna/handle is notorious for ageing badly and becoming very brittle. Otherwise you can end up with the handle in your hand and the radio smashed on the floor.
@electronicsoldandnew4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that piece of advice. I’ve warned the owner as well.

I’ve nothing against German “over-engineering”. In fact, the German radios of the 50s and 60s are great examples of the way that that philosophy advanced the world of radio. As for your second paragraph: Me too. I get to relax because my editing is done for a while, AND I get to watch one of Tony’s videos 😊

The transoceanic line of radios were specifically about being very good battery powered and portable receivers. What is missing on this one is the D cell battery holder, which fills the entire space between the chassis and the back cover.

I have two missing hinges on my top section of the front cover. I've tried something similar to what you did, but I can't get the new sheet metal to stick. Chrome does not solder well of course. How did you get yours to stay put? Also, which trimmers are for which SW bands? You showed how to align the LW band but I have no idea which trimmers are for which bands. Thanks!

What did you use to clean the ‘stickyness’ off of the black leatherette? I have this radio but there is something sticky on some surfaces. What did you use to get the black shiny again?
@harryshector4 жыл бұрын
Try cleaning with alcohol, then use Armor All. That may fix the problem. The feel is caused by the breakdown of the plasticizers used in the vinyl. The Armor All, which should be re-done periodically protects the plastic from the oxygen in the air, which, I think, is what, when combined with age, causes the plastic to deconstruct.
