Great review Nigel! I especially love the blur on the first tree shot at the end. It's practically abstract! Cheers, Dave.

Thank you for posting a review of this very interesting lens. I have been a fan of Zenography for several years. Always a quality discussion. At the risk of flogging a dead horse, however, the traffic noise did made it difficult to hear everything you were saying. Otherwise, great stuff.

I'm fine with the design of this lens but since I own a copy of the 7Artisans 50mm 0.95 and also the TTArtisan 50mm f1.2 I cant say I'm very excited. Also this one is looking a bit on the soft side optically? It would be great to see an honest head to head with the 7Artisan version and to find out if there are any particular distinguishing characteristics or flaws.

Really like tree shot number 5 (5th image after Lplate.) As Soon as you said apsc I had to Google to find it, something didn't add up, but tta have made 2 50s at 0.95. it's not so prominent on t web ,but the focus ring marking help define it from the less affordable full frame version. Unless comparing the Leica sumolux, Nice they've decided to make it available for different mounts ,maybe there's been more difficulties with adapters than the 1 dodgy Amazon review iv seen. I've been exploring the murky world of Minolta to e mount adapters , only one slip up so far, there's a handy page explaining functional ,partual or not compatibility on the Sony website of all places.
@zenography79232 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a handy resource - I've not had any problems adapting Minolta lenses myself but I hear the mount went through many small changes over the years so I guess I've been lucky!

Dear Nigel, an interesting video though the noise was sometimes unbearable. Apparently as you did not use this lens for vlogging your living room would have been the better place for recording. There is apparently a full frame version for Leica which is about 3 times more expensive. Do you know how anything on the quality differences? One schulmeisterlicher hint: the focal plan has always the same "thickness" (if this term is appropriate for this vanishing smallness of a light quantum) it is the depth of field that is varying.

✋🏼😁 Hi Nigel, did you shoot your samples with mechanical shutter (slower) or electronic (faster). I think this lens needs a 2 stop nd on most sunny days. Shooting with mechanical shutter renders better images than shot with electronic shutter with FujiFilm. 📸
@zenography79232 жыл бұрын
Most of these were shot with electronic shutter, due to the very bright light that day. Thanks for the tip!

A couple days ago I noticed Y.T. no longer gives one a search by oldest upload. (last week I watched your very early uploads and left comments, which may never be seen) Anyway, too bad about that. What youtube should do is allow a search within a user's uploads by subject. Maybe I'm just focus peaking myself...

I wonder whether it's possible to take portraits at maximum aperture. I suspect not because if you focus on the eyes you'd probably get a blurry nose which isn't very flattering 😀

A blur monster to the extent that nothing is in focus.
@zenography79232 жыл бұрын
Well, I wouldn't say nothing is in focus - the plane of focus is thin at f0.95 for sure, which can make some incredibly beautiful shots, and if it's too thin for a particular shot it's best to stop down a bit! Thanks for looking in.
@dedskin12 жыл бұрын
Jesus Christ nothing is in Focus , we the photographers always want that blur , but i find my self stopping down more times then opening up . I have Canon 1.8 , and the biggest problem i have is what to shot , its not F ratio , like here , man goes out has F0,9 lens , and what , not a single picture is moving , not a single good shot , that is what happens to me too . You have to have a target , you have to to the mountain or a hill near by , at sunset , get that F10 rolling and shoot some landscape , for example . For this 0.9F lens i dont know what you can do with it , you can shoot portraits , but you still need a target , a fine model , you still need lights , 2 Flash lights , umbrellas , light modifiers , and get all of that right , you can shoot with F8 , no one is going to complain . That is what it boils down to .
@zenography79232 жыл бұрын
I guess f.95 isn't for everyone!
@dedskin12 жыл бұрын
@@zenography7923 Do you know what to do with it ? I mean the more light the better , but we must think about other aspects , like focus , and we lose that . Stanley Kubrick's famous shot in the Theater was done with F0.9 lens , and it works , but for video , and even then subjects had to be places specifically in order to be in focus and even then they are not really in focus . So basically you need a Film gear , a studio and Focus pull , in order to use it for Video . Photo , i dont know , only low light portrait work . But even then one eye will be in focus the other wont . Its a problem im sure you know that .

You could possibly get a lavalier microphone to reduce some of the background noise. Also there are some nice audio plugins that can remove noise from dialogue that are very affordable. I use Waves Clarity Vx, which can be purchased for $40 on sale. It is super simple to use if you have a video editor that can use audio plugins.
