How about comparing this one to the xpa-dr3 at 450 watts x 3 channels. Is it worth extra $1000.?

W A - Sweet amp. I bet you’d be able to hear a difference if you ran a Emotiva XSP-1 gen 2 preamp with your sweet ass Yamaha integrated amp! At the price point your at now people get extremely opinionated and fastidious

I have one of these. The first thing you notice about this amp is that because of the compactness of the switching power supply, it is...mostly empty. That's because the same amp structure is used to take between one and 7 amplifier modules. They have rolled out a monoblock chassis now that cuts down on the empty space in that configuration. But the power supply can supply peaks up to 3000W, so the power supply is not the practical limit of this amp - it is actually the protection circuit, which limits the minimum speaker impedance the amp will drive to around 2.5 ohms. If there were no protection active on the modules, they could drive ultra-low impedances of down to 1.6 ohms, to peak power of 1500W, on both channels. But the individual amp modules can't handle that kind of current without destroying the output devices, so there is limiting. My assessment of this amplifier is it has gobs of power to really drive any full-range speakers you might have, but it has no sweeteners. My Aragon A2004 amp from the 90's (bought used from a friend) has less power but sounds quite a lot nicer. I might press this amp back into service to drive some passive subwoofers. But I haven't sold it.

I have my HTPC sitting on top of my XPA-5 and the power supply from the PC interferes. I don't really use the XPA-5 much anymore since I have XPA-1 monoblocks now and usually just listen to 2 channel anyway. I tried comparing my old Carver amp to the XPA-5 and I could hear no difference. I'm not really sure how people hear differences between quality amplifiers. Their ears must be better than mine.

Class H is basically class AB with two voltage levels in power supply instead of one. When signal is large enough, the higher voltage takes over and that is the principle behind power saving.

The subs all have SVS isolation pads which helped a lot and then the mini dsp and extra room correction really dialed it in. I am very happy with the sound. I like the Emotiva amp more than the Parasound - everyone says the Parasound has a warmer sound and the Emotiva is a cool sound, I dont know I just know they both have no distortion at reference level volume and from the horns on the 590's I like the sound better (personal preference) with the Emotiva. I do listen to jazz, classical, 90's, 80's, electoswing as well and to my ear it sounds accurate and crisp. Doesnt matter what source I am on it all works well together - the timbre matches. Im no audiophile or expert just an enthusiast that likes what I hear. I hope this answered you question. @@toorop111

Crown 1002 power consumption does not exceed 175W for both channels (2x80W?). This is written on the back plate. So do not expect more than that in the out ports. Emotiva XPA Gen3 has got 3kW power supply so it can feed about 2kW output in multichannel config. 2 channel version cannot consume more than 1kW. No sense to compare Crown 1002 toy with full powered Emotiva XPA Gen3.

Love the review Zeos. This is a "Dak catalog" amplifier. Onkyo made a cheap monoblock amplifier in the late 80s to late 90s that sold like hot cakes at every BrandsmartUSA, NobodybeatstheWiz, etc for $299 or less. Looks like Emotiva did its best to copy it minus the amp handles. They were reliable but were nothing special. This is the Hyundai Sonata of amplifiers. You can pick up a used crown or anything solid state from the last 30 years and it will cost less, probably sound better, and offer some good old nostalgia. Emotiva is nothing special. When the company launched 15+ years ago some of their gear was interesting and had a better value proposition, imho. Metal remotes, 😂. Today the chi-fi market is flooded with interesting stuff. There is nothing "emotive" about this amp. Emotiva's loudspeaker line may be a different story. Dont know much about their loudspeakers. I will defer to a Z review on their speakers.

Emotiva's higher end products have always been domestic. And it isn't just assembly. It's just that saying "Made in USA" is ridiculously strict. The FTC is hardcore about that. Same reason Schiit gear also says assembled in USA now, even though their products are as American as ever.

Take note that he says he can't hear the difference between the XPA and the Crown XLS 2502. No doubt an audiophile will hear a big difference. Speakers also make a difference. I also do DJing and I have owned the 1002, 1502, 2502. I sold all of them to my DJ buddies. I didn't like how the bass sounded and also the high end was not natural sounding. It's Class D so I was not surprised. Also the noise floor on those amps is too high. I am thinking about getting this Emotiva. Looks priced really well compared to the competition for an audiophile quality Class AB amp. Seems to have tons of power. I currently own a 100 watt and 125 watt per channel rated amps. I just need to figure out if the extra power will benefit my setup. I would just it not for DJing but to power two tower speakers in my home setup.

Thanks for the review. I debated buying this 5 channel amp. Glad i stuck with my crown xls amps instead of this emotiva. Double the price for no audible gain or difference. Large and bulky, hardly fits in any tv stand. I drive polk lsim 707 towers with crown xls 1502, crown xls 1002 drives polk lsim 703 and the yamaha avr drives the center channel. Audiophiles can't handle the fact they spent 8k on an amp and these new transistor board amplifiers are becoming the new norm.

Crown amps have full power at 1.4v and .775v. With selective input sensitivity. Even with weak voltage from modern avr's there is no issue with driving my speakers. No one wants to spend 3-5 grand on a pre amp. I've driven those amps with different brand receivers and never noticed a difference.

Crown xls 1502 has 250W power consumption MAX while Crown xls 1002 has 175W power consumption MAX. Both of them don't out more than that. Emotiva XPA Gen3 has got 3kW power supply block, so it has fair power.
@13bcoffee
@13bcoffee 3 жыл бұрын
With that trick power supply, they are capable of putting more power out than they pull from the wall. The caps store power for a few seconds that the amp can pull from. The 1502 was bench tested and did hit it's numbers. The catch is that the power is specified at 1000 hz. It can't hit those numbers at lower bass frequencies such as 50hz. Still the amps put out a ton of power for what you pay.

@TheTruthTeller1111

The amp can't make the rated power with both channels driven full range into a low impedance, is the typical reason they rate them that way. Most amplifiers do have an issue doing this.

Cant see using this for home theater since only two channel. Your center channel would suffer if your left and right were powered by an external amp and you had your center powered just by a receiver.Not familiar enough with external amps to know if you could tell the difference but I can't imagine you would not hears some change in sound.

Z so why didn't you give more of an 'splanation of what H circuit vs Crown's Class D? Also $$$ wise?Crown 1002 is 200wpc/700 mono for less that $350 and (some say better sounding) 1502 with 300wpc/1050 mono $439 at Crown well there better be some real difference or the Crown is still the no brainer vs this big ol box for $1K.Can you more 'splain? Class H is just a modern class ab. It switches to a higher voltage rail to add more power. Class D works by changing the signal to pulse wave modulation then changing back to pcm to be efficient. It's not about power or distortion in this case. What it comes down to is how well they are implemented. Well crown are pro amps as in they are used for shitty PA systems where loudness is prioritized before quality so the crowds can hear. The amp is durable and reliable so you can stress it... But it sounds like shit. The xpa amp is just a really efficient speaker amp. It sounds om and still has to much power. You only need 100 watts unless you're powering small speakers for a big room then you need to upgrade your speaker size because it will be crazy difficult to accomplish.

@@V1ralB1ack Actually, the Crown amplifiers don't "sound like shit". I had a Crown CTS-2000 that was every bit as good as my friends Krell and Mark Levinson amplifiers as far as sound quality.

@ZReviews
@ZReviews 4 жыл бұрын
I think the Heresy have better mids and highs. Lack low end and are WAY too low. I am going to recommend people put them up on stands if they are serious about music listening. ALSO they are so efficient that it throws off the balance a bit. If you crank them the horns overtake the 12" and they start sounding thin. So I am Bi-Amping them to correct that.
