I have to make another comment. I have been watching the conductor very carefully. He does a stunning job with the orchestra and chorus. The orchestra is not at all noisy, and he has complete control of the sopranos. Bravo, Maestro. Bravo, orchestra and chorus.

Are you implying that the sopranos are more in need of control than the other voices?? ;-)

Truly excellent. 1:01 Altos start the fugue, excellent mastery of dynamics, Beethoven choral fugues benefit from a moderate pace and light starts, most of the time. The conductor must have worked hard to get that level of suppleness and control from the chorus and orchestra. Was a bit jarred by the english at 2:32, but hey it still sounds great and the sound is super supple and clean. Thanks for posting this! 😊

I definitely agree with all the comments below; however, I take issue with the slower tempo of the fugue and the over annunciation of the letter d. "Praise the Lord" sounds more like "Praise the Lort", and unfortunately, I found it distracting and almost unable to forgive. Annunciation is important indeed, but not at the cost of the overall fluidity of the piece. I'm sure that there will be many naysayers, and that's okay...it's a free country and this is just my opinion. Overall, a wonderful performance.

Beethoven wrote this to be performed in German, not in English. Certainly this chorus can sing in German, can't they? German is one of the languages choirs are supposed to be able to sing in, nicht war? After all, it's not Lithuanian or Xhosa, right (just picking a couple of rarer languages)? In no particular order: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian. Disappointing.

This popular English adaptation of the final chorus from Christus am Ölberg has long been a staple for church and school choirs. The English version transforms it into a 'hallelujah' and is not a literal translation of the original German text.
