Beethoven didn’t compose the libretto. That was Franz Xavier Huber, according to Wikipedia.

I have to make another comment. I have been watching the conductor very carefully. He does a stunning job with the orchestra and chorus. The orchestra is not at all noisy, and he has complete control of the sopranos. Bravo, Maestro. Bravo, orchestra and chorus.

Wonderful performance- the joy on the conductor's face and the choir, the huge scale of the production, the rapturous applause at the end! Handel's chorus has a rival!

Truly excellent. 1:01 Altos start the fugue, excellent mastery of dynamics, Beethoven choral fugues benefit from a moderate pace and light starts, most of the time. The conductor must have worked hard to get that level of suppleness and control from the chorus and orchestra. Was a bit jarred by the english at 2:32, but hey it still sounds great and the sound is super supple and clean. Thanks for posting this! 😊

Same here. We sang it in university choir twenty years ago. We learned our part (alto) together in sectional and will never forget the tempo, the crescendo, decrescendo, and everything even until now

I grew up listening to the Robert Shaw Chorale sing this on an album entitled Great Sacred Choruses. But this live version has become my favorite. I start every Christmas season by finding and listening to it.

I loved the clarity of their performance. The Morman Tabernacle's version is very overproduced. UCLA's rendition is crisp, allowing the nuances of both orchestra and choir to come through.

I had the privilege of singing this several years ago, when our church choir director, who was also music/band director for the local middle school, brought together musicians from the high school to play while we sang. It still gives me goose bumps!

A minor score by Beethoven, lifted above the norm by the clear and crisp chorus, in a moment they will surely remember all their lives. Glory be to Beethoven and his choral pieces (Fidelio included), which can best be described as hymns to the human spirit

I thought the Robert Shaw was my favorite but I do believe that this rendition is a better one - clarity, precision and timbre of voices. Wonderful ! Yes, to hear the entire piece with these artists would be simply marvelous.

I definitely agree with all the comments below; however, I take issue with the slower tempo of the fugue and the over annunciation of the letter d. "Praise the Lord" sounds more like "Praise the Lort", and unfortunately, I found it distracting and almost unable to forgive. Annunciation is important indeed, but not at the cost of the overall fluidity of the piece. I'm sure that there will be many naysayers, and that's okay...it's a free country and this is just my opinion. Overall, a wonderful performance.

The Angeles Chorale which also rehearses at UCLA. Donald Neuen was its Artistic Director for many years until he stepped down a few years ago.

+Dean Schulze Her name is Dr. Rebecca Lord and she was the UCLA Associate Director of Choruses. Prof. Neuen and her worked with each other for many years and she was in charge of this whole performance and the various farewell activities we had for Professor Neuen.

Beethoven wrote this to be performed in German, not in English. Certainly this chorus can sing in German, can't they? German is one of the languages choirs are supposed to be able to sing in, nicht war? After all, it's not Lithuanian or Xhosa, right (just picking a couple of rarer languages)? In no particular order: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian. Disappointing.

This popular English adaptation of the final chorus from Christus am Ölberg has long been a staple for church and school choirs. The English version transforms it into a 'hallelujah' and is not a literal translation of the original German text.
