Very interesting series that reveals a lot of new, to me , information . One question though. If the spy basket was lowered from the bomb bay, and was down advising when to drop bombs, how did they avoid hitting the spy basket with the bombs? I had initially assumed that the spy basket was just used to find the general lovation, and was then wound back in prior to bomb drop. But your descrption of the calais raid implies that the spy basket was down all the time and was continually spotting new targets.

Thanks and great question! Yes, spy basket stayed in the lowered position when they started bombing, also to see with better accuracy what they hit. The spy basket was attached to the Zeppelin with the steel cable, the bombs dropped vertically from the bomb chamber. Because of the speed of the Zeppelin while bombing (80-110km/h) and the spy basket being up to 800m underneath the Zeppelin, the bombs did not hit the spy basket.

@@BSport320 thanks for the answer , so effectively the bombs dropped in front of the trailing spy basket. Is that correct? Still don't think I would fancy being in there when they let loose. 😆 Very interesting series by the way ,as was some of the other historic stuff. That u boat haulage across Europe was mental! Interesting that some of the road layouts were built specifically for that trip and still exist to this day. I wonder how many modern locals know? I must also admit I didn't realise the zeppelins were capable of such speed when bombing. I had always thought of them as being fairly lumbering, a bit like Ming's spaceship in the flash Gordon film 😆.

The bombs would drop behind the spy basket is what I was trying to say :)@@Dilbert-o5k

Aaaahhh this whole Zepplin mission thing sounds way sketchy. Is it okay if I don't go down in that little spy pod thing? Furs and hot coffee? Can I use my battery powered socks? Im guessing no smoking either. :-(
