The Stones are the "Greatest "Rock and Roll" Band"....as Zep...is, in my estimation...more "ROCK," and not so much "roll"...Zep is a genre unto themselves...Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis were the real original "rock and roll" artists...and the Stones are much more aligned with "that" and american old-school blues and R&B, than the "progressive excesses" of Zeppelin....I mean..."Brown Sugar" is "Rock and Roll"..."Kashmir?...not so much. Great. Yes. But not in any sense of the term "rock-n-roll."

As for the Stones, as a "musical movement" or "cultural influence" there 1963-1981 period is brilliant, because Jagger became a socialite (this backed up by Keith's bio), the band managed to develop close ties with music journalists and the "right" people in the media. Led Zeppelin was a different beast, it's hard to believe but they were underdogs throughout their career despite selling millions. Look at every tour until 1977, always the Stones stealing their thunder in the "big shot" magazines. Where i don't think The Stones deserve such a high pedestal is the fact they've carried on with many lineups and their post 1989 career is a parody of themselves. Musically i don't think they too as many risks and their live shows are NOT as diverse as Led Zeppelin. John Bonham defintiely made the band who they were....his death is more than tragic, it stopped the rock and roll world from keeping it's integrity i think. Best rock bands in my book: The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, no revolving door personnel and their influence....tremendous.

I believe touring in July was a mistake, June should have been the finale...a grand finale. in this case,the powder didn't had anything to do.as crazy bonham could be,he always prided himself in being spot on for the shows.they say he was upset and angry about that night in san diego,which didn't had anything to do with drinks or drugs but to a very upset stomach.no one knew how he got through the whole show in that condition.for the next show (the forum),he was determined to blow up the stage that night.he made some comment to page about it. he wanted payback,and he did got it¡¡

I was 8 years old in 1975 and of course, 9 years old in 1976, but if I had a time machine- just listening to all of the bands that you listed- man. What a time! like I said, I was alive but I wasn't going to experience any of this. I suppose listening to Mike's bootlegs would be the closest thing to a time machine.!

There's one word I wish you had used while "Nobody's Fault But Mine" played, when Bonham and Jones came in and that was power! The power those two displayed that night on so much of the show was just astonishing, taking nothing away from Page's guitar work or Robert's vocals either! It astounded me, in listening to the bootleg for the first time, how three people (again not discounting Robert, just setting the vocals aside for a moment) could generate such a wall of sound! I took my headphones off three hours after the concert started and I could kind of imagine how it must have felt to actually have been there and had the beat pulsing through your head and your chest!

This was great, almost like the 'Eddie of the JCM docs-it had it all. SW credits, and references with the whole band in character and Jimmy's SW sound on the 22nd. The requisite dig at The Eagles, a few Page 404 errors and a few cheeky jabs at Ginger Baker-I heartily approve of those! Love that you dedicated a decent amount of credit to Mike the Mic without whom we wouldn't be here watching this. His great achievements even with the (not inconsiderable) shadow of PG looming, actually made me sad to think how much more LZ stuff we could have had he not been so overly zealous in censoring fan recordings, especially during shows he had no intention of having professionally done. Plant got some great vocals out (and some hilarious Plantations), Jimmy and JPJ were creative and focused And my Bonzo😍...what can I say about his performance, seriously what was he ON on the 21st and where can I get some? 🤭

I think Peter Grant just adds to the love for these bootlegs. Sometimes hardships is what makes a historic document extra special. Look nowadays, everyone can record a show, HD, multiangles, etc, yet no one revisits them anymore. John Bonham's touring doctor was definitely a hero on the 21st. I'm sure he gave him a good shot of B12 Vitamin, that stuff will make strong in seconds. No kidding, i had to have that once as i had a nasty flu and a 3 hour show ahead. Thanks for watching Elle! The title of this boot SHOULD HAVE been “Listen To This Ginger…and Buddy!” San Diego 6-19 is a difficult and disturbing show to sit through. My mate and I listened to some of it the other night - because we HAD to (upon my insistence.) There are a few bursts of usual brilliance (surprisingly) but largely this is a tough one to sit through and knowing Bonzo had three hours to go is just…rough. Whatever demons were chewing away at the departed drum giant is anyone’s guess - and frankly none of anybody’s business but his own and his family’s. FF two nights and to their favorite venue: after two years/three months of absence there was much to prove this night and Bonzo more than made it up to himself and his band mates. Well he’s just kicking the living sht out of anyone/anything that dares come too close to the drum rostrum. Imagine a first hand account from Hinton? Good lord. Waiting for this episode for me personally was like waiting for King Kong in 1976 (also a John Barry Prendergast soundtrack score) to come to my local movie theater, and me at 9 years old. I lost sleep in anticipation and that’s no lie. Night two (the only night for Jim in full Dragon suit) is a very killer show too, riding on the great vibes from the previous night. The third night…feelings of sluggishness were beginning to creep in a little bit (and that dreaded Kashmir mishap) but Bonzo was certain to show everyone on hand who the better drummer was that night… Moonie had no chance 🤪. The final night on the 27th in my opinion sounds about as good as this opener! Thank you Jose for this great episode and of course, Mike the Mic. We’re forever indebted to you for capturing the impossible!

Fantastic work. My LZ fan career began when n about 78 I think. I missed the kingdoms show, as I was probably 12 and hadn’t quite arrived. In the next year or so, I discovered it, via LZ 4, in probably the 8th grade. Quickly followed by HOTH, III, PG, II, I, Presence. In that order. Sometime probably during my infatuation with HOTH I made a new friend. Jeff, he played guitar, no, he channeled guitar, by way of Jimmy Page! Jeff would plug in his Carvin Les Paul copy, through a Morley Wawa, MXR dist+, and MXR phase and show me how Dazed and Confused was played while the turntable was spinning TSRTS! He played every single song, the studio albums, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 2112, etc In 9th grade he was in a band that played bars, only 2 of the other members was still underage, Mitch (drummer) and Ritchie (my young childhood friends older brother who was in high school) on bass. The last two read charts, and were first string in their school band. Jeff, I can’t remember if he read, he was just the teenage legend who everyone knew was Pages unknown clone. I followed Jeff till his death in 2004. Never attained his deserved recognition outside those early years. My zeppelin bootleg collection includes some of the LA 77 shows I think. I stopped collecting years ago, but still have around 100 vinyl’s, 200 misc single disc and 2,3 and 4 CDr ones, and maybe 100 still non digital cassettes. I’ve heard perhaps half of them. Every once in an awhile I dig out a CD that was burned onto my computer, swap it onto my phone and go for a drive. I have a kickass JL Audio system in my car, with a high quality Pioneer HU, so driving to a board sourced bootleg is great. Some audience sourced shows are good as well. Most sound bad, so those shows are often hard to enjoy, unless they are somehow standouts. My favorites are any Seattle shows, I think I gave all of them, Gonzaga University is great only because of its existence. Sound is shit. Hoping this video is as great as it is so far, I’m only 5 min into it. ❤

Hi Jose, the money was in the States & until Robert lost his son he enjoyed performing there. It was Bonzo & JPJ’s that got fed up with touring. Jonesy and his wife hired a Winnebago and did their own thing. Festival’s in England were ok in the 70’s but Zeppelin hated having support. Grant only booked minor bands even for Knebworth they were paid a pittance other than Wood & Richards, but they only did one of the shows. Plant cancelled his gig at my local venue last week, Cliffs Pavilion he has rescheduled for November. As for Earls Court the sound was always terrible, Iron Maiden played it in 2000 on the Brave New World tour the sound was appalling even with a modern PA!

One thing I know for sure, the acoustics were not great. I saw the Stones with Van Halen opening there in either 77 or 78, and you couldn’t really discern what was being played, especially when it got really loud with VH. Definitely couldn’t appreciate Eddie’s solos…

Also when Pink Floyd played Kemper Arena Roger Waters was not lip syncing either (he would start lip syncing on the third performance of The Wall in Los Angeles after throwing his voice out the first night leaving David Gilmour to sing the last verse of Hey You on February 8 and parts of The Trial).

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Roger most certainly did start lip syncing The Trial as of the third Wall concert in Los Angeles (The Pros and Cons Tour he was lip syncing more and the lip syncing snowballed in 2006 as he threw his voice out despite the fact that he quit smoking in 1975 but screaming and pushing the voice the way he did recording Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut and Pros and Cons took a toll). David Gilmour on the other hand has always sung live and won’t use tapes nor click tracks. In fact he sang almost all of Dogs on the Animals Tour except the last verse and if the song was too high he would change the delivery but keep in the same key structure.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-StoriesYes it was tape. David Gilmour sings live and I saw Pink Floyd on the final tour in 1994, skipped my Senior Prom to do so and was blown away. David Gilmour sang great despite the fact that he flubbed one lyric on Keep Talking and forgot one line on High Hopes as it was overcast and rainy and was nervous about the rain pouring on his lap steel which he played the ending solo after tossing the towel off the stool he sat on to play. His solos were spot on and his Fender Stratocaster guitar solos especially on Comfortably Numb were awesome. David’s last tour he sang live and sounded great and does a series of shows. I stopped seeing Roger after The Wall because of the lip syncing and saw him five times between 1999 and 2012. He didn’t mime on his 1999/2000 shows except on Every Strangers Eyes but the rest was all live warts and all. Only member of Zeppelin I saw was Robert Plant in 2002 when he opened up for The Who and the Dreamland album was just released and was blown away that I bought the CD a few days later. Plus did three Zeppelin tracks and hit the high G on Babe I’m Gonna Leave You. I kick myself for missing Page/Plant and especially the Clarksdale Tour.

Hi Jose ! First of all, I usually say that if it was recorded by Mike Millard then it's good, very good stuff! This man was awesome, the wheelchair trick was genius. I imagine Grant meeting Millard up there and shouting “you rascal, you fooled me all the time!” 😂 As for this episode, it makes me think that these people lived through an incredible time, so many fantastic bands, great songs, cool movies, it seems like the world was a better place than it is today. I really like Zeppelin's shows in 1977, I know not everything was perfect but you know, love can be blind and deaf too... that reference to Jimmy's black suit, there's a video with Plant having fun saying “Mr. Page’s pants are falling down!“ They don't show anything but I would have liked to have seen Jimmy half naked 😂 thanks for this great episode Jose Sensei, excellent research, editing and presentation as always. Also the ill fated sequel to The Exorcist which was Exorcist II The Heretic (which was a financial success but paled in comparison to the original) was released four days before the L.A. gigs. Also an interesting fact about the MSG shows Linda Blair attended two of the shows at MSG and one of the Pink Floyd MSG shows in July as she took a year off from acting to focus on her equestrian showjumping hobby and was dealing with the lifestyle choices that would get her in trouble with the law at year’s end.

Exorcist II oh yes...with the infamous Pazuzu. I've watched it a couple of times, there's some fascination with this flop. How can you screw things so badly after the 1973 CLASSIC i wonder haha. Linda Blair was at both shows? He definitely partied hard in the late 70s, no blame to her, she was a star, but her career certainly did not pick up...her posing for that magazine didn't help either. Rick James would disagree with me.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories She was at two of the six MSG Zep shows (a reviewer from the New York Times spotted her in the audience at MSG for Zep on two of the six shows) and she was also at one of the four Floyd shows at MSG (she lived in Connecticut at the time). For the record the Rick James tale he made up as he wrote his book while under the influence and dying and Linda got sober in early 1979 and dated Tommy Shaw of Styx and left him in 1982 over his drug and alcohol abuse and infidelities. Rick and Linda were friends but were not as romantic as the press claimed (in fact Linda severed ties with Rick over his drug addiction (her story on the fallout has never changed whereas Rick's did after he went back to using in 1999 after his stroke and the BtM had aired a year before) as she was finishing her four years probation and anti-drug speeches punishment for the 1977 cocaine and 1978 marijuana busts). I watched the Behind the Music which he made in 1997 (aired in 1998) before he relapsed and changed his story about her (she was interviewed as well and her views on what happened have never changed).

QUOTE (I've watched small bits of his documentary style voice overs prior. This is the first one that I watched more than 10 minutes. I was surprised that he misquoted audio of Robert's from the June 21st, 1977 and he incorrectly thinks John Bonham is singing the verse vocal lines in Bron-Y-Aur Stomp -- when Jimmy Page sang those vocal lines along with Robert in 1977. I was only able to listen to other parts of it, while I busy with other things. If those basic unforced errors in there are present - I'm sure there are more. Pink Floyd never played there due to the size of the stage and instead played Anaheim Stadium in 1977, 1988 and The Rose Bowl in 1994. David Gilmour played the Forum in 2016 supporting Rattle That Lock and played a great cross section of Pink Floyd material and solo material.

I've often noticed that Roberts register seemed to stretch back to his old voice when they did acoustic numbers or simply when the music is quieter. It seems like whenever he puts more force behind it to make it louder is when his voice breaks.

My uncle had tickets for the Chicago Stadium shows in '80 that were to never be. You should do a review of the Richfield Coliseum show from April. I think that is top three from the tour, next to Seattle Coliseum, and one of the Forum Shows. Definitely Hot Shit, except I think they were hotter in '73 and '75. I think they were just tighter, and it was probably due to all the distractions that manifested during this '77 US Tour. I mean you get rid of Cincy, Tampa, and Oakland and it's a great tour. Anyway JMHO. Cheers!!!!

I was there for the 3rd night show, I clearly remember Ias 19. we had seats behind the band which I thought were going to be horrible but it was just the oposite. We got to see all kinds of things going on back stage. At one point during one of their sets there was some crazy guy on his hands and knees behind Bonham who kept slapping their gong. Plant finaly notices the guy and pulls him out on stage and says Kieth Moon everybody Kieth Moon! Moon and Bonham end up doing a drum solo with Moon standing in front of the drum set while Bonham stayed seated. It was beyond epic! It wasn't but a few short years later and they were both dead.

6/23/77 it's all about the badge holders for me. One of the very best No Quarters ever recorded. Bonham is so on fire that night. Amazing. And having seen many shows at The Forum , I have to say that place has amazing acoustics . Got to be that low ceiling it drops down in the middle . It does not sound and echoey . Really good doco!! I have a copy of Listen to this Eddie, its really good!! The Outro of No Quarter is one of the best musical moments in the 1977 tours, but maybe it was Achillies Last Stand, there are some epic examples from '77. I quite like Roberts voice in this era, it became more about the texture, control and flavor, less about the screaming.......Bonham plays like no other rock drummer can, he was so in touch with his playing at this stage and I can't think of another drummer who could even come close to the power of Bonham, but at the same time, he was dynamic and played so intelligently. JPJ is is the glue, he's mammoth in his contribution to keeping Zeppelin on the tracks. However, sorry but Page really lost his way, I want to like what hes doing so bad, but the booze and drugs really took their toll, cleverly disguised as food poisoning a few times, there were always glimmers of something that could have been, but overshadowed by out of tune guitars under bends, overbends, overshooting notes and chords, sticky fingers syndrome, missing things, the self indulgent twaddle and that horrific gimmick "solo" he does with the Eventide H949 to awful effect......it pains and almost embarrasses me because hes my favourite guitar player and I feel we all know how much better it could have been..............But then he did some back with a vengeance in the latter days of the Page/Plant tours, his guitar playing through that period makes me proud and he was unstoppable, his shows with the Black Crowes showed how incredible he could be, I'm so happy he made it through those dark times.

Kev i can understand why you feel this way about Page, thing is, i just can't hear it on the recording as in "wow he sucks" you know? As a guitarist and fan, i can say there were some problems but the locking in system with Bonham made them carry on with the show like very few you know? I agree Page and Plant got his guitar mojo back. The show in CHILE 1996 remains one of his BEST.

Jimmy never sucked, but rather struggled and battled those demons, and thats what I hear in his playing, it makes me a little sad.....I know I single him out a lot, Bonham ultimately and tragically paid the price in the end which was devastating in so many ways...But somehow back then JB kept his playing together, maybe not so much on the 1980 tour, but it was never as obvious and it was with Pagey... I love the way you can find the jewels in Pagey's playing, and I enjoy your takes on it too!!

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories -Thank you. It's a really difficult time right now. Everyone at some point deals with family loss but losing a Mother to illness is almost overwhelming. We had a good familial relationship and her loss is devastating and hasn't fully sunk-in. I remember her saying "don't worry there'll be other concerts to see when you're older." So it was an age thing. I remember replying "This is Zeppelin the biggest band in the world and there won't be another chance to see a band like this again. Even at 10 I knew the opportunity. I might play some LZ to ease mind somewhat during this difficult period. Good channel and thanks again.

This was an absolutely phenomenonal 6-night run at the LA Forum. I'm sure that Led Zeppelin could have played many more shows at the LA Forum, on this 1977 run, with rests in between. Jimmy Page has stated that Led Zeppelin had to sacrifice additional concerts during their various musical tours because they simply couldn't satisfy the massive demand for concert tickets to their shows

Thank you thank you thank you for this review of the most badass live recording I've ever heard...picked it up from Ear Xtacy in Louisville in 1982 and never looked back. Did miss just a bit the coverage of the "Mo-mo-mo-mo-monkey on my ba-ba-ba-bad back..." Robert indeed was "starting to cook..." I really do wish they'd tackled In My Time of Dying on this night with this energy, though

When Bonzo takes over and plays LEAD DRUMS in the studio - and Jimmy let's him - man! that song can take me places! A small correction: During the 1977 tour, Jimmy was doing the backing vocals for Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, not Bonham. Thank you for this documentary, been waiting a long time for this. Awesome!

I was 10 years old in 1977 my brother saw them in Cincinnati that same year. He was also at the who show in Cincinnati where 11 people were trampled to death. I think one person was killed at the Zeppelin show..

Bonham bass roll+snare during TSRTS is off the charts on 6/21. Plants best show from 77, sang his arse off on sick again, the acoustic section, Kashmir! All great. Page is at least awake for 77 but still not hitting the solos. Wish we had a healthier plant in 75 like 77 it would have been devastating
