I can explain why a number with an exponent of zero (0) equals 1 another way. Whenever a base number is multiplied by itself continually, that means addition for the exponent, and division of a base number by itself means subtraction for the exponent. Therefore, when the exponent equals the identity element of addition (i.e., 0), the base number has to become the identity element of multiplication (i.e., 1). However, a negative number with 0 for an exponent but no parentheses around the negative number equals -1. Also, as you might've said, 0^0 has no meaning.

I see you have made this for basic math. Maybe my question is basic? I am just posting this problem to several sites on exponents to see who response first. Sorry, this is in a college algebra class. I have a problem in a college text book that seems simple but has made me second guess myself. It is 27 X^-2 (U^-73 V^2900 w^163)^0. Now I got 27 / X^2 thinking that all that (.....)^0 = 1. The book has the answer in the back which gives 127 / X^2. I assume the 127 is a typo and it meant 27? However, I know that U^-73 V^2900 w^163 equals V^2900 W^163 / U^73. So, I am wondering if the answer in the book is a typo like I assumed, or does V^2900 w^163 / U^73 somehow simplify to 100 and not 1? I'm 95% sure (U^-73 V^2900 w^163)^0 = 1....? Plus seeing your example of (X = Y / Z)^0, I am even more confident all the mess (U^-73 V^2900 w^163)^0 = 1...lol. I know mistakes can be made in a textbook, but as a student when you see stuff like that it makes you go WHAAAAAT?....Then you ask yourself, could I be wrong somehow? I'm still pretty sure the 127 is a typo.
