Excellent video, thanks! Don't know whether you've ever done this, but I'd love to see a video of you zeroing this scope at the range. I just bought an SS 10x42M to put on my Savage 10, and was surprised to find that no manual came with the scope.
@drmaudio8 жыл бұрын
Thank you. It is not uncommon for scopes to come without instructions, though I wish they would. I appreciate the request and I will make that video next time I sight something in. In the mean time, this Midway video covers the basics well, with the exception that you would not want to zero 2" high for precision shooting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIa5ZWN3mtl5a68 Thanks for watching.

Rex at Sniper 101 had a good idea. Just using a pointed color sharpie (I used green) I simply put a tiny single dot with the sharpie facing me at the base of the turret at my zero. This can be done on both el and wind turret zeros. If changing zero for any reason, wipe off with acetone and reapply to new zero point. Great idea especial on windage where you need to go past your zero and a stop just gets in the way. Price? Cost of a color sharpie.
@drmaudio8 жыл бұрын
Yes, that absolutely works. I use to put a thin strip of white tape just below the zeroed turret. I used p-touch labeling tape which is thin enough for the turret to roll over if you need to dial down a little, but having a zero stop a mil or so below your zero is much faster when you are dialing back and forth a lot. Of course, as you mentioned, zero stops are no good for windage, so dots or tape are great there. Thanks for watching.

FYI The maker says "all the fixed power, non-HD scopes and the 3-15". NOT just the 3-15x as mentioned below the video.

Looks like a simple and effective product. Like DirtDart said, now you can zero farther out than 100 yards and still have a reasonable means to find your zero. Have a good one, Doc.
@drmaudio9 жыл бұрын
+JunkfoodZombie Yeah. My range is daylight only, and even when cloudy it is still bright here, so I haven't really missed the illumination (though it would be nice). The problem I was having is when I dial up for long range shots 6 or 7 hundred yards out there, with the 5 mil per revolution turrets, you can find yourself several revolutions up. If I forget to put it back down, or forget if I did or not, it can take several shots to figure it out. The other issue is going from 700 to 300 where I would have to remember how far up I was for 700, than subtract the dope for 300 to figure out how far I need to dial it down. When dialing for several different ranges like this, it is very easy to get lost or confused. This fixes all that. It doesn't matter where you are, you can always just bring it down to the stop and back up to zero, and you are at the right starting place for whatever dope you need for the next shot.

Buy a cold water 3/4" plumbing pipe. cut it for the space below the turret. cut the pipe to make a C-clip. sand to fit with small amount of play. zero stop for $2.00 and time.

Zero stops are nice, 30 and 40 MOA bases are better so you can simply hard zero your scope on the bottom rotation from the start. Might be worth checking out?

is your rifle actually zeroed on the number 0? or did you just do that so it would be understood easier?
@StoneHardFITNESS8 жыл бұрын
I'm getting a swfa ss 12x42 so I'm just trying to understand this easier.
@drmaudio8 жыл бұрын
I adjusted the scope so so my point of aim and point of impact are the same at my zero distance (100 yards), then I "slip" the turrets. In other words, you take the turret caps off without turning the stem, rotate the cap, and put them back on so your 100 yard adjustment now shows "0" on the turret. You can then dial up or down for different range targets while still being able to return to your 100 yard zero. The zero stops come in because you may have to dial all the way around past zero (sometimes several revolutions) to set the scope up for long range shots. In this case, when you want to return to your 100 yard setup, the zero stop makes this faster and easier then having to count or remember how many revolutions up you are. I hope that helps.

awesome thanks for the quick reply, that seems like a smart thing to do, i will be sure to do that once i get my 100 yard zero! thanks again

Nice vid, thanks. You had accidentally dialed up 1/10 of a mil when you removed your turret but replaced it at zero. Did you notice this when you tried the rifle?
@drmaudio7 жыл бұрын
slofr8dan I see what you are seeing there, but by that point the cap is already loose and the stem is not moving. It has reasonably positive clicks.

+Gun Sense (drmaudio) what size Butler Creek Flip-Up caps do you use on that SWFA 3-15x?
@drmaudio8 жыл бұрын
+ddyoder They are standard Flip-Up: 16 eye, and 30 objective. The eye piece cover fits slightly loose. One layer of electrical tape inside the cap (sticky side toward the cap) fixed that nicely. SWFA sells them as a kit, part number 155k, here: swfa.com/Butler-Creek-Lens-Caps-Kit-P44314.aspx

Cant you just pay attention to the numbered scale on the side of the turret???
@drmaudio6 жыл бұрын
Sure, but zero stops are faster, less condition dependent (unusual shooting position, lighting, etc.), easier, and considerably more stress-proof.
