Way too many people giving her crap about not being vegan. The fact that she's living a reduced waste lifestyle and sharing her passion for it on here should be applauded. It's not about being perfect it's about inspiring and normalizing a more sustainable lifestyle.

Dom M, Vegan does not mean perfect, it is the best way to reduce harm towards other sentient beings, the planet, and often yourself.
@spir51025 жыл бұрын
Dom m, I think people are bringing up veganism because number one, meat is just not good for the human body, and number two, the animals are treated inhumanely and cruelly. do a search on KZbin or Google for factory farming and you'll see why most people who are aware of this recommend going vegan. Also go to nutritionfacts.org to find out about how unhealthy meat is.

Hey! Usually I'm never writing comments, but you are so damn inspiring i have to say that i cannot believe how such an awesome person like you doesnt get the appreciation you deserve, or people even judge you. In what world are we living, where millions of people adore persons like the kardashians, and you try hard to make a change in the world, without getting paid for it or having a manager .... the whole humanity should listen to you.

In the UK (London anyway) we don't have bulk buy supermarkets so EVERYTHING comes in plastic wrapping (often double plastis wrapping, too) and so what we do instead is buy it but take it out of the plastic wrapping and leave it in the supermarket. This sends the information to the supermarket that we don't want the wrapping! More and more people are doing this and they're having to clear more and more plastic wrapping themselves (which hopefully means soon they'll stop producing it!). Of course I would MUCH prefer to buy in bulk with zero plastic packaging, but while that is not an option for me (for the most part) let's keep sending them the message we don't want their plastic!

I recently got into baking and used soo much "baking paper"! It was on my grocery shopping list and I kept thinking about alternatives. I went to ikea and they had a stainless steel baking sheet as well as a silicone one. I went with the silicone one as I can take it with me wherever I move (lightweight, portable, rolls-up). I tried it out on the weekend and it's so amazing! This I can use forever whereas those baking sheets I just can't. I am using plastic containers to get my food to work and put them in two plastic bags (because they do leak occasionall). I have yet to find an alternative for both things, but since I am re-using both the box and the bags all the time it's OK. I just recently stumbled across your channel and love it!! Love your style as well .. and that septum .. it suits you sooo well!! :)

nick orange there are 2 cons. you can't clean them properly. they are a hub for bacteria unless like someone said to use pipe cleaners to clean them. if you have to buy pipe cleaners to clean a straw might as well use disposables straws, unless there is a use for used pipe cleaners. I'd suggest a spiral set.
@Gittemary7 жыл бұрын
If you buy a set of 4 or more straws, you usually get a pipe cleaner with the deal. I have found that the pipe cleaners that comes with the straws are meant for multiple uses, and are eco friendly. Above all else, I usually run boiler water through my straws once a week. It is most certainly not a solution to go back to disposable straws, never :)

Sorry but have to comment after reading all theses "why are you not vegan?" comments... First of all people, use your brains and your "instincts" when going through moral choices such as theses. Kudos to all vegan people for making that great effort, because thanks to you our food industries will have to change, some have begun, and adapt to human wants (less waste, better animal welfare,etc...). But becoming a vegan is NOT the only way to get there, I think if we each greatly reduce our meat intake future generations can be tought to consume reasonably. Being vegan used to be a moral choice, today it's mostly a trend people follow mindlessly, with absolutely no idea of how to do it properly, and undermine people who are not following conformity. Everyone has the right to make a change for the best in their own way, little by little, and we should be proud of them, not judging them by the single thing they haven't managed to change yet. People will be less inclined to change if they feel forced or pressured, we all perceive the world differently. I for example am more attracted to an organic vegeterian diet because I instinctly feel eating processed tofu or other protein supplements is not very "natural" or healthy in most cases ( MSG soy and all..). And I won't contribute to the seafood or egg industry by having my own chicken coot and fishing for a wide range of fish (not only salmon, tuna and the likes). That's what's great about diversity, we all have our tricks to keep the world as balanced as possible.

what would you recommend I use when I am freezing and defrosting single chicken breasts other than sandwich bags?
@Gittemary7 жыл бұрын
For small items like that, I use mason jars in different sizes :)!

I didn't even realize my family is starting to do this. We already have straws and we just reuse them we haven't thrown any away and we always take canvas bags

What to do about buying bread? It is always packaged in plastic at the grocery stores near me, and the farmers market doesn't have baked goods..,
@Gittemary7 жыл бұрын
I either go to the baker's, where I live there is no packaging, or I make my own :)

I try to to not get plastic bags, but I do get them time to time to use into my trash can. What could I use for the trash instead?
@reasonablechica7 жыл бұрын
Compostable plastic bags are an option, I found some in the health food section of my local supermarket. Really the only thing you can do to avoid trash can liners is to take forever filling one to capacity so you don't have to change them out often.

Hi, I had a question about about electronics waste, like old computers and cellphones. How do you account for this things in a Zero waste lifestyle?
@Gittemary8 жыл бұрын
+Diamond Oden When I have a piece of electronic equipment that is broken I turn it in at the recycling centre, they have a place or a bin for it. Then it will be torn apart and the parts will be used for other things. However, I have very little electronic equipment, only computer and cell phone. All my kitchen equipment are manual :) I hope that answers your question :)) !

How do you clean glass straws?
@blumeshullman80028 жыл бұрын
Straws are useless in the first place, you can drink without straws. If you use straws to protect your teeth from acidic and sweet drinks like juice, then don't drink juice outside of main meals, and brush your teeth afterwards. Yes you need to remain hydrated throughout the day, but you can drink water, and you definitely never need a straw.

Blume Shullman No! Do not brush your teeth under one hour of drinking fizzy/acidic drinks because it spreads the sugars around your mouth!
