a family of 4 went waste free and folks are still criticizing them?! that's wild. what a cool mom. she's got 2 young kids. they likely need a car unless we spontaneously decide to ditch freeways and horse and buggy comes back in style.

BronzeBellaBria you know not everyone drives, right? I'm 25 and my parents NEVER got me a car, and I've never driven before. haven't you heard of public transportation?? biking??

ultimatekai Not realistic for everyone. It would take me all day to get to and from work, my car gets almost 40mpg and I want my next one to be a hybrid if not a full electric. I'm not willing to give up easy transportation but I am willing to drive to a store that will let me use less plastic in the long run and invest in products that reduce what I waste. I hope to move to an area that allows me to use my car less for things like running errands but baby steps. No one is perfect.

I didn't say that everyone drives. I said that they likely need a car. You're you (solo traveler, maybe). They're a family of 4 with young children + 1 dog. Public transportation isn't always convenient, available or even an option where some people live. Not everyone lives near or adjacent to a bustling a metropolitan area. Not all areas have good/reputable/reliable public transportation *coughs*--Baltimore--*coughs**. Not everyone can rely on friends and family to help get kids to appointments or help with grocery shopping. It might not be feasible for a family with young children to live without a car in their area. I grew up in a suburban/borderline rural area. It would take me 20 mins tops to bike to my dentist. But it would take me 6x as long to bike to my Dr.'s office and I need to take busy roads to get there. I'd be concerned if I saw people biking with young children on the highway because they didn't have a car, couldn't catch a ride, and had no public transportation in the area.

Totally agree! If we all started somewhere think what a huge difference that would make overall to a village, town, or city. You would think basic stuff like this would be a requirement for the school curriculum, but unfortunately capitalist thinking eliminates common sense. Sad really, but that's the big bad world now. I've been looking at our rubbish volume and how to reduce it drastically, I believe every little helps. Also it's much healthier too, bulk foods in a cloth bag is so much healthier than plastic or plastic coated packaging, let alone reduction in waste. Unfortunately typing my thoughts here is like preaching to the converted, I'm sure that most people that watch this channel already know this.

I love this! We have also been reducing our waste for the last 2 years. I honestly wish I could go back in time and raise my 3 kids without all the plastic waste we produced before knowing any better. As it is, my 3 are teenaged and I find that although they understand WHY we as a society need to reduce waste, (and they do a really good job for the most part) they get nostalgic for the prepackaged "food" we used to buy. If I had raised them zero waste from the beginning, they wouldn't miss things that really weren't all that healthy to begin with.

This is very inspirational. I have been thinking about all the waste my family produces for some time now but outside of composting, I don't really know where to start. What I've been doing in the meantime is bringing in fewer things into my home, so that ultimately there is less trash. We also shop at the farmer's market so there's less packaging. That has helped a lot.

I currently live at home in between my spring and fall quarter from university, but I've become a lot more conscious about the amount of waste I produce both on-and-off campus. Off the grid with food, power and water. I am always so inspired by people who have done this, or are in the process of learning the lifestyle. One Life, One Search, Peace Out, Shane.

I am adopting to a zero waste lifestyle slowly. My dad was very concerned about the environment and he raised me and my sister telling us how we need to care about the our planet, plants, don't buy sodas, perfumes, deodorants, save water and trun of the electricity the list is long. Since I was child, I was very conscious of my actions.

pretty much the age of my kiddos next month makes me think. I have had a goal of zero waste but have had some very out of the ordinary obstacles to being zero waste I would get so frustrated with myself and I have had to pretty give up the goal for now to stay sane but it has pushed me to look at some bigger over arching waste streams and permaculture and has given me the heart to set up community groups to set up apartment dweller s with bokashi compost systems and connect them with farmers and land owners for composting and starting a system of networking to grow soap berries all over the county so the poor can do laundry.and other permaculture and bartering systems. I am so encourageed by zero waste and I want to do what I can to help all families achieve it.

virvich the only shop to buy bulk near me is the chain bulk barn and they just started allowing your own containers. No pet food yet and limited choice for some stuff. We have 5 cats so that’s a cat food bag a week and litter which I have considered composting but worry about ground water contamination. But second hand just doesn’t work for clothing for us. Size 6 to 14 girls it just dries up or there is xs women but the cut is wrong for size 12-14 on third girl so well researched, the exception is dresses lots of dresses.
@MaybeAshleigh
@MaybeAshleigh 6 жыл бұрын
You can start making small changes to the amount of waste you produce NOW! Be mindful of the clothes you buy and try buying more of your clothes second hand. Choose loose vegetables over those in plastic packaging. Stop using plasic straws, we don't really need straws but you can buy metal ones that you keep and reuse if you want! Also try to carry reusable cutlery with you to avoid needing plastic disposable cutlery when you're out. If you buy coffees/hot chocolates/tea often, invest in a Keep Cup that you reuse rather than using disposable ones from the cafe/shop. Carry a glass or metal drink bottle with you so that you can refill that and won't need to buy bottled water. Next time you replace your toothbrush, try to find a bamboo toothbrush which you can compost when you're finished with it (remove the bristles first). If you are a person who menstruates, look into purchasing a menstrual cup and/or reusable cloth pads and/or period underwear, rather than disposable pads and tampons as they produce a huge amount of waste throughout our lifetime. They're just a few suggestions, and you don't need to do them all immediately! Just start to think twice when you're about to use plastic and disposable items, and choose a low waste option if it's available instead :)

I started transitioning to this lifestyle about 4 or 5 months ago and it has been very interesting and challenging. I have found that the majority of my waste is from things like frozen and fresh berries, packaged veggie burgers and since we are gluten free, it is very difficult to buy gluten free flour, pasta and the like in the bulk bins. I can't just buy a loaf of unpackaged gluten free bread. I make all of our dinners from scratch, but I can't be 100% zero waste because of our dietary restrictions. I eat berries everyday and there's no way to buy them package free. I have a very large raspberry bush in the backyard, but they're only available in the summer. I just can't give up my berries! They're way too healthy!

Congratulations. How do you weigh stuff that you pack in your glass jars? Do you weigh the jar each time and how does the retailer do this? Also what do you do with your dog poop? Especially when he poops outside your homes backyard. The backyard poop can be flushed. But how about when he poops in the park. Also, do they sell dog food in bulk and how do you pack it?

@DawnBreaker5

kuchytapr if you take a jar in, usually you have it weighed before filling it at the cash register or customer service area. If you use the same jar all the time you can just write the tare weight on the jar in marker, or use a sticker. Cloth drawstring bags are also an option. If you purchase them they usually have the tare weight sewn on the bag. If you make your own, same process as the jars, weigh it yourself, or take to the store and wright the tare weight on the bag in permanent laundry marker. Hope this helps.

kuchytapr sorry, forgot to add- like you said, you could flush your dog's waste at home, but we have a dog poop composter. There are several methods online, one was put out by Vancouver parks program, just google "dog poop composter" when we are out walking I use newspaper that my mother still subscribes to (because we don't 😉) and wrap it up well and put it in a small bag to carry until we get home, then I just add it to the dog poop composter. Our pet store sells bulk dog food (dry) that we fill a 5gal bucket with. Hope this helps you.

kuchytapr I don’t think you can flush pet waste is your sewer treatment plant isn’t prepared for it call your local authorities plus then it goes in water or sludge tanks made of concrete better to compost it in a special corner of your yard

Yeah, just kinda look around what's in your area and depends on what you like. I'm vegan and I buy bulk wheat flour, rice, lentils, beans, peas, nuts, seeds etc. I grow a lot of fruits and veggies and I buy from a local farmers market. I'd say the most important part is to reduce consumption of processed/packaged food.

Cat Thompson You need to have some bags and jars. You probably already have some in your house. You can also get more at thrift stores, and even make bags out of old clothes. Then you go to the stores that sell in bulk with your bags and jars. Rice, beans, oats, fruits, veggies... Meats are problematic because they contaminate the packaging, which will need to be sterilized, by boiling or otherwise.

a little suggestion? when you go zero waste use everything ylu already own without buying anything new . your plastic toothbrushes can be staralized and reused and then clean your tile grout with them. your old clothes can be made in to cloth shopping bags. everything should be reused and remade in your own household never leaving your front door. If yu collect your garbage in a jar like that get in touch with the Garbage warrior team to see if they will be able to incorporate your glass jar garbage in to the building.

A restaurant- e.g. a fast-food- can not have tissue, straws etc for customers to use but only offer reusable towels ect. People used to bring their own oil bottle to the groceries store to buy oil and carry shopping in a fish net plus they bought food for a few days -they didn't store food at home for long a few dicates ago.
