A thoughtfully packed handbag. Thank you for the video 🌷🌿. My handbag is smaller. I always carry a tissue pouch and wallet I made. A handmade pouch I bought for my mobile. My sunglasses and reading glasses. I need to replace my pen with a pencil. I like the feel of writing with a pencil and holding the wooden outer layer. Tiny things I have - a notebook, hand cream, hand sanitizer, headache tablets in case a family member needs it and a cotton mesh shopping bag. When we go out for a few hours I take drink bottles and a snack in handmade snack pouches I made

There are things I carry with me to reduce my waste, but a lot of the things are not super accessible to me. I'm a wheelchair user who cannot carry much on their body, and additionally, my chair is not in the greatest shape and will tip over if I hang things on the back, so I have to be very choosy about which items I bring with me when I leave the house, especially independently (which is very rare right now, but I'm hoping to build the independence to take a few classes locally soon). Carrying folded bags in my pouch is pretty accessible, but by the time I bring my assistive technology (such as the tablet that assists me to communicate verbally) and medical equipment, there's definitely no room weight-wise on my person for much else.

I have a toddler so my bag contents count a bit higher than yours but I just wanted to give a suggestion to any mommy out there trying to live a bit more minimalist. Going out to eat? Most places offer a coloring page with a few crayons to keep the little ones entertained. And guess what happens when you leave, crayons meet trashcan. Keep the crayons! Throw them in a little pouch with a small notepad and you’re ready at the drop of the dime for free entertainment. Crayons getting too short or broken in a bunch of pieces? Melt them all down together and make a multicolor, fun-shaped, brand new crayon :) Cheers to you and your channel. I absolutely love it!

Great ideas! The one thing I would suggest, as much as you kindly like supporting your local artists, is to use a RFID blocking wallet to protect your self from electronic pick pocketing, called RFID skimming. Some credit cards, passports, and driver's licenses now come with embedded radio frequency identification chips and your info can be stolen right through your purse. These wallets can be ordered on Amazon and other places.

I truly enjoy all your videos and i learned alot from you along the way. But in general i found all of “What’s in my zero waste handbag” quite impractical in my life. I walk at least 8kms a day and carrying a water bottle, a coffee cup and all sort of things in my handbag is just totally unsuitable. Carrying on this much of stuff everyday would definitely destroy my back in a long term. I would love to know your tips on having a zerowaste handbag for ppl like me. :) 🙏🏻 thanks
@FairylandCottage6 жыл бұрын
It's great you get walking in everyday. My friend uses a backpack instead of a handbag. If a backpack is of good quality it will sit comfortably into your back and have support. I would also recommend a bamboo coffee cup because it is lighter than stainless steel etc. Same with the water bottle, the lightest material you can get. Scrap bring snacks in glass and use stainless steel instead or if you have some tub aware. I hope that helps somewhat.

I love munching on fennel seeds! I use fennel and clove oil in my homemade toothpaste! So good! Though I never even thought to pack them to go!! (Duh!) Thanks for the good tip! I also love that you bring your servette with you! I am looking at getting a set for myself and my kiddos - (since we are the ones who are out and about the most!) I'm looking towards bamboo and some type of 'spork' type utensil so I dont have 4 forks and 4 spoons in my bag!! (With littler ones both are often needed!) Do you have any good tips for snacks on the go for kids that can last in a bag for maybe more than a day? We bring nuts, seeds, and dried fruit as well as granola or my homemade energy bites most of the time... oh and fruit- but often times I find myself reaching for/buying those convenient apple/fruit sauce packs because they are really easy, not hard to carry around and well... fruit. (Though definitely not zero/ low waste sadly. Any other ideas you may have?? Love your channel! PS- Love your bag!! I have 2 canvas bags - a bigger one and a smaller one- LOVE them!! @@FairylandCottage I have a question... How do you know exactly what can be recycled? For example the plastic wrappers on microwavable popcorn packets? Or maybe I should ask how do you know the little stickers on individual fruits are non recyclable? I don't want to contaminate my recycling bin with items that cannot be recycled. My waste company has a very generic list of items that can be recycled and I guess what I'm really asking is how can I be as well-informed as you? It really sickens me to know that our environment is going to hell because of ignorance and greed.
@FairylandCottage6 жыл бұрын
You are very conscientious. The problem is that really not much can be recycled. Some recycling centres will recycle specific items but it depends on the centre. If you have a generic recycling bin, itemising what can be recycled, you can presume with confidence that anything else cannot be recycled. Its a grim reality that recycling is not really great. Glass and tin cans are widely recycled but even hard plastic that has the triangle on the item still cannot always be recycled if it has other material on it etc. Take it that nearly everything is landfill unless you have a good recycling centre near you that can take odd items (ours takes plastic lids and polystyrene etc)

Another good reason to use pencil instead of pen in a diary is that when things change - and things always do change! - it's easy to erase and rewrite. I have found that this not only keeps the diary looking tidier but also encourages me in flexibility. If it's written in pencil it's not carved in stone so I'm more prepared for change and it doesn't disturb me as much as it used to do. The outer mirrors the inner. Thank you for all you teach us Niamh. You are creating s great deal of good in the world.

I'm not sure if you already have one, but I would love to see a video on when and how you started becoming mindful of waste, and a starters guide for those who want to become as wonderfully mindful as you are.. but a quite intimidated!
@brendagilbert43045 жыл бұрын
Oh please don't be intimidated, dear Elizabeth. Just do one thing at a time. One simple step is to become aware of how much plastic we use daily and gradually begin to reduce it in any way you can. But totally without stressing yourself about it. It's not about perfection. It's about being kind - to ourselves and to our planet.
