This is not a “by-the-book” "Zettelkasten; I utilize the webbed-approach and hierarchy blueprint loosely to aid queries. A molding of my old system, of which is substantial, and this new framework (which is proving to be very useful). I’m bound to make more changes in the future to cater new needs. If you want to create your own system that works for you, I recommend following the same "webbed" approach (smart tagging and relating) over strict hierarchy. Any program with backlinking can be used. Notion is just my go-to. I was a bit fearful to make this considering this method has a lot of passionate followers, which is why I was scared of this title: "How To Implement Zettelkasten Inside Notion." Rather I chose: "Zettelkasten In Notion & How I Use Its Principles." If there are any formulas or functions here you'd like me to go over in the future let me know!

For anyone interested: The word “Zettelkasten” is pronounced as something like “tsaetteulkarsten” in German (use English pronunciation). In German, we pronounce “a” as in “car” and “z” as tse. And after the double “t” (“tt”) follows a short break. Idk if this is helpful, I just noticed how barely anyone non-german uses the original pronunciation :)

Pro: One of the most direct, objective and precise explanations about Zettelkasten, applied modernly. Congrats, OP. Con: Very complex implementation in Notion, since Notion is not its own tool, since there are its own applications like Zkn3, The Archive, Obsidian etc. Suggestion: As Notion now supports backlinks, just add subpages (+) to create the hierarchy of parent and child notes. Best in, IMO, Roam Research, Remote, Obsidian, note-taking apps next gen.

If note doesn’t relate to any other note, I start a new thought and go from there. I divide each note card by context, and add continuation/sub notes within it. Citing book and pages within body of notes. Some people like making one page with the book’s title at the top and sub pages as chapters

Thanks Red for the sincere and articulated share - like how you kept open perspective, I was thinking in parallel how his original style was unique to his personality - very rigid to even create such a system - the energy for those with less rigid personalities now possible with backlinking in Notion or other software means this is truly the age of 2nd brain and the power that comes from that. For those, perhaps like myself with often over-expanded thinking where I lose ideas since my notes were never backlinked, this is such an exciting time to 'bring it all together' but also then get more practical and realistic as the scope can be seen from afar (and visualised in many systems like Roam and Obsidian) so much fun - thanks

Revising Red, I wonder is your numbering system offering any value to you? Since you have to pause and first understand your numbering system - vs Obsidian idea or Roam where you can visually see the relationship? I see value in knowing how many notes follow a strand ... interesting stuff. Here's an concept to add which I'm setting up - x.y.z as usual distance dimention attributes to ideas, then 't' as a time attribute which like the universe cuts through space and why there is no time outside of a 3-dimsional reality

Very good video of the concept and the technical application. I had just reading "How to Take Smart Notes" about zettelkasten (book renamed it to slip-notes). Generally I've used OneNote for the last 2 years and was looking for potential software for this and had learned about notion. Notion looks pretty technically capable since you got some kind of scripts at 8:18, so I may have to look into that as well. If I end up using notion in the future I doubt I could do is it as detailed as you. One tip is to explain the system the share the template for notion. The reach users better to avoid too much technical detail on the tool. The more technical audience can figure things out anyway. Focus on use cases and templates and much simpler..

I really appreciate this video, and it is ingenious how you've managed to create these templates! I am currently finding a way to organise my notes on Notion, and I am struggling a lot! I tried using 2nd brain templates from other KZbinrs including from this one, and all just seem too complicated, but I'm still keen on the rationale on why it is being used. After finding it overwhelming, I looked for Zettelkasten videos and they too are quite complicated. I have a very very bad relationship with perfectionism, always seeking the one that works best, and I'm not really a creative guy and I tend to outsource towards other people's ideas/templates. Plus I work as a pharmacist and I want to keep my knowledge base on Notion organised with any of these methods. Do you or anyone else have any tips please?

I'm in exactly the same boat! Wanting this "web-of-ideas" approach without having to figure out how to create with equations such as I've only seen in the most complex Excel sheets. As a graphic designer this makes my brain melt. :( HOWEVER, for those of us who want to think more visually, I think Red's idea of file cabinets makes a lot of sense, check out their other video on that, because it rolls up individual topics into other larger categories, rather than having to have a big mess of tags that are inter-related but still distinct. Try to look past the programmer jargon (no offense, seriously!) and think about where a particular piece of info might fit in your own mental web and how you'd arrive there, and you can kind of "back in" to this structure. In my mind it's like Minority Report. :)

(About formulas) Hello Red! What an amazing (and complicated) tutorial! I'm watching it several times over to try to understand. I'm struggling most with the code. I liked what you had done with the Time table, where you had added the seasons in. I'd like to do the same for Bronze Age and Golden Age etc, and preferably link them to continent as well as these ages didn't start at the same time everywhere, but I cannot figure out how. I'd like for it to understand that if the age is between 1700 and 500 BC , and if it is linked to the location relation and populated with Norway, that the formula would show "Bronze age". If it is too complicated to add the location, even just the time 500-1700BC=Bronze age would be nice! Could you help me break down the formula so I can learn how to do this? Or if anyone else knows? Thanks!

I mean zettels with start type (ex. 1.0 ::: Unification in general, 2.0 ::: Bttle. Gettysburg) Seems like, if I want continue an investigation of something, I must follow "1.1 ::: Some Title". But if I found a new additional info about, I should create the Supplementary card from an appropriate source. I understand this approach flexible (own life - own rules 😁), but I'm interesting what you think about. One more example please)

I love that Obsidian now has aliases so [[Tony Robbins, Anthony Robbins]] will work on the same card. I wonder if Notion does that? Zettelkasten is a brilliant invention. Did you ever consider what happens with your collection of knowledge if the software (not just notion ... any software) is corrupted. Is there any way to to retrieve it from Notion
