Thanks. I replaced the cracked upper valve block on my 03 XJ8 with the trans in the car and your videos were a big help. Symptoms were dropping out of gear on hard stops and slow engagement into reverse and drive when hot. I made alignment pins out of 16p nails tapped 10-32. Really made it much essier. I too had issues with the aftermarket filter. Sounded like a Ford power steering pump on startup. Viewers - Watch the whole ads so Gary gets paid.

Hello, thanks for replying to me!!! 👍🏼 No.... once I let it warm up no harsh reverse engagement. (It’s always smooth and perfect, unless I go into reverse quickly but only the first time each day. Today I let it warm up a few minutes and no harshness. Been doing this off n on for about 6 years.

Hi Gary from France ! I repaired a gearbox of X5 v8 4.4, the rings are new and bronze, the torque converter is also new; But when I am going to accelerate to start at a slow speed, but if I do it too brutally, it accelerates in a vacuum, I have to accelerate very slowly to make it roll; Solutions...? I'm not at my first box but this one gives me a hard time ... My speeds are jumping I do not know if my soleinoids are good Thanks you so much

This demystifies one of the most intimidating aspects of these transmissions. Thank you! Two questions: 1. That stone you used to smooth out the valve body ... would you please advise how I can acquire one? 2. How do you know how much the torque the various fasteners?

Try googling sanding stone, i think i got it on line, maybe amazon. I have the actual ZF manual that gives the torque specs.

I know this video has some age on it, but I was wondering...if one of these 5HP24's drive fine in the morning until it warms up, no slip, smooth shifts, feeling *perfect. Then fully warm, it revs free and then bags hard from a stop.I can feather it by modulating the gas pedal and get it into 1st, and after that it will climb gears, all the way to 5th and be fine, until I get off the freeway where it will free-spin and bangs again. I did get a tcm code for stall error. Does this sound like a torque converter to you ?( new correct fluid in it and filled right )

Hello Mr Bimmer. How is reverse? When you get a stall error code, that means it's slipping on pull away, not converter problem

Hi Gary, I have one of these trans in a 2001 BMW 740i with sport. I’m getting intermittent and now more constant harsh shift to reverse for the first time each day I drive. (Once it’s warmed up it has smooth engagement) All else is fine with the trans, it’s had 2 fluid changes in its life, and now has 89K. I was thinking VB rebuild/update. Any ideas? Thank you!

you may want to check the dampers on the end of the drive shaft, if you let the car warm up, is it still harsh?

At 17:00 You said this pressure control valves were ok. How can i see that they are ok, or when should i replace them? Thx
@GaryFerraro3 жыл бұрын
The Pressure regulator valve bore wears out, when this happens it creates pressure spikes and blows the A drum, if the bore looks worn the casting will have to be replaced, if ok you can use the second design valve. what kind of car is this

Hello Gary and thank you for this!!! Question... I am thinking about doing some preventative (seemingly important) maintenance by replacing the lower front valve body section (w/filter tube) to my 2002 Audi A8L at 160k during it's fourth upcoming fluid change. I want to avoid the dreaded pressure regulator valve sticking problem that's known to kill the A drum in higher mileage vehicles after the aluminum bore becomes worn. From what I can tell, it looks like I'd be able to remove just that lower front section to switch valves out; correct??? Or not? And anything else you would recommend too? Speed sensors maybe? Or other? Thank you!
@GaryFerraro5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can remove the lower front half only and switch the valves, there is a second design pressure reg valve as well
@erics85955 жыл бұрын
@@GaryFerraro Thank you again Gary! Where is the second design pressure reg located??? Also back to this valve... Would you recommend using the TransGo valve option since my casting is brand new? These are suppose to extend the life of the bore.
@GaryFerraro5 жыл бұрын
@@erics8595 If the casting is new you can go with second design pressure reg valve, Just take out the original one and install the second design. Do you have a source for parts?
@erics85955 жыл бұрын
@@GaryFerraro I thought you meant from the beginning you were referring to another valve somewhere called a secondary... But I think now you're just saying a newly upgraded pressure regulator valve exists, which I assume is the 5HP24PR TransGo Kit for my D2 Audi with a 5HP24A tranny. I already bought the casing from Eriksson Industries.
@GaryFerraro5 жыл бұрын
@@erics8595 No, actually a second design OE pressure reg valve, since the casting is new you can get that valve, much cheaper than the transgo kit. If you were reusing the original casting and it has the PR Vent, i would say use the transgo kit

Hi I have this transmission in my X5. Having a problem with downshifting. After driving for couple of miles when coming to a full stop it bumps. I believe it's 2 to 1. I have read on a forum it could be O ring, and the roller bearing issue. Don't know what that exactly is. But the explanation sounds logical. Apparently with a internal hydraulic leakage and fluid getting wormer and thicker. The pump can’t keep up with the leakage at tickover so more revs are required to provide sufficient pump flow to get the A clutch engaged. What do you think is this what I'am going through.
@GaryFerraro4 жыл бұрын
So you would say it's ok cold but not hot?
@arturgrabowski35314 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. There's a weird noise when you drive it in the morning. But after a short trip it's getting quieter. That nois is very clearly heard when accelerating particularly with wheels turned left or right. I'am suspecting that would be the torque converter. So when cold it's not having problems with downshifting but other symptoms.
@GaryFerraro4 жыл бұрын
@@arturgrabowski3531 Does the noise change with engine rpm? I had recently worked on a jaguar with a similar problem, when hot had a 3-2 downshift bump. I spoke with a ZF expert on this and he said it's normally a valvebody problem, I changed the valvebody and problem remained, I decided to pull the trans out and found excessive clutch clearance in the clutch packs. Was anything done to the trans prior to having this problem?

Hi, I note that you mentioned possible issues with one of the oil tubes grinding against the valve body deteriorating it. I have an issue where the oil tube closest to the frontal part of the trans nearest to the engine is hanging down 1cm. Is this tube supposed to be plugged up against the housing in the hole or is there a bung/plug which connects the tube to the housing? I doubt the tube just sits freely below the hole, am I right? cheers

The part number for the oil tube I'm referring to is 1058 301 071.

If you look at your video at 37.36 mins toward the central bottom of the screen there is a right angled oil tube which goes up toward the trans (sorry i'm no expert on the terminology). Is that tube plugged directly in like the others or does it stay out?
@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
none of the tubes should be left out, they should all be plugged in. Sorry for late reply, shop is packed. Thanks for watching, please subscribe
@anne76067 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, Yes it seems they should all be plugged in. When removing the oil pan from the trans it was noticed that the tube I'm referring to was popped out about 1cm low from the entry hole and left hanging. The tube was then pushed up into the hole but kept falling out. I then researched the ZF 5hp24 parts catalog manual and the oil tube (ZF part number 1058 301 071) has an associated bung or plug (ZF part number 1058 301 019) which looks as if it may plug into the end of the tube I'm talking about. This part was not present when the pan was removed and I'm wondering if it has fallen out or removed in the past. The transmission is in an e38 late 1996 735i BMW
