A crack has one tip, while a flaw has 2 tips. Imagine you have a crack with crack lenth 'a' and Crack Tip 'A', so for an internal flaw it will have two crack tips and thus the length of the flaw will be equals to 2 times 'a' (Crack Length) that is why its '2a'. This is amazing, 2 minutes in and I understood certain concepts that I have been having a hard time grasping. I have one question; why is K larger in plane stress condition than plane strain condition for the same material?
