竹虎四代目が竹縄（たかなわ）の製作、作り方を紹介します。竹縄の材料は真竹や淡竹の新竹を使います。その年に生えた竹の枝葉が開いて3日目が伐採時といいますが、3.5メートル程度の長さに切り揃えて油抜きの加工をするのです。一度のこの作業を映画で拝見した時のことが忘れられません。虎竹の油抜きなどと違い豪快でした、まるで高知特産のカツオのタタキを思い出すような火の勢いでした。それもそのはずタタキは藁を燃やしますが同じように竹縄の新竹油抜きも大麦を使い一気に大きな火で炙るのでした。それから、ずっとこの目で見たかった竹縄作りの現場、訪れた東秩父村で竹縄が最後に販売されたのは昭和27年頃だそうです。竹の技消えていく中、縄の製造は細々とではありますが受け継がれています。一般道路を通行する山車には「竹縄」で結束する事と当時の警察署にも記録されている程の自然素材最強のロープ。日本人は身近な竹から様々なものを生み出して来たのです。
