I went there some years ago. Beirut is the only city I traveled thus far and found it like coming back home to HKG, as its terrain looks very much like HKG, with shoreline and jogging trail. People are modern looking and beautiful. You can hang out or drink beer in downtown Beirut similar to what we're doing in LKF HKG daily. They've 17 religious sects. And it's the only city in 1982 that CIA had planted a car bomb to revenge against its some 200+ GI there being killed in the barrack by the militia. Eventually they concluded that they're Lebanese first and foremost, thus ended the Civil War, and the Israeli occupying forces in the southern part of Lebanon were asked to be evicted. Maron was a Syrian Saint, and also the patron Saint of Lebanon. Thus they've the well known Maronite militias besides Jumblatt of the Muslim Druze. Not far off from downtown Beirut, there's a big cave with dropping of some 25 to 30+ storey high. I traveled to the Beqaa Valley, the very place where the IDF of Israel fought with the Hamas ferociously then in 1982/83. The Valley is exotic, you can see the Bedouin people, with armed guard posts along the road and certainly you'll find yourself traveling back to the medieval. In a certain part of the valley, cedars are found everywhere, and some are told to be more than thousands years of age, besides monasteries dropping thousands of feet deep down the cliff in the valley. One also should travel to the population center of Baalbek, in the middle of nowhere, suddenly there was a big site of Roman relics up to 3/4 storey high, exotic and amazing indeed to surprise you. To accommodate the different religious and political factions, they've instituted by the French, a multi faction political system with the top 3 senior posts to be occupied by Shites, Sunnis and Christians respectively. Eventually it didn't work well as we saw it today. It's tragic, a country that one time called Paris of the middle east.
