The last thing and worst thing you can do to anyone who is suffering from (any kind of) addiction is to publicly shame him. They need professional counseling and the support and unwavering intervention by their loved ones. The only people they will trust are those who have been through the same struggling. Their brains are changed forever by the chemicals from the substances they unfortunately got themselves sucked in. Those who have the kind intention to help also can benefit from the counseling designed for these families and friends. It's a nasty fight. The addicts are sick in their brains. It takes empathy and tremendous perseverance to get involved. Just because you have a long relationship with the adddicts isn't enough. DON'T SHAME THE GUY PUBLICLY! THAT WILL BACKFIRE BIG TIME.

It seems to me substance abusers cannot help themselves, so great is the pull. Perhaps it's not "don't drive if you drink," but complete abstinence, as in AA.

Agree every word you said but I think you had it in wrong direction. His case is not about addiction…
