This piece is “Rashomon” played by “Chikuzen Biwa” which is another popular type of Biwa than “Satsuma Biwa” , as you know, played by Kinshi Tsuruta. “Rashomon” is the name of the old gate that existed in ancient Kyoto. Actually, this piece is about the story more than 1000 years ago referred from the old Japanese collection of tales, although the song of Biwa itself was composed within the last 100 years. The performer is Kyokusui Yamazaki. Unfortunately, she already passed away but she was one of the best players of “Chikuzen Biwa” and designated as Living National Treasure in Japan.

In Rashomon the story goes like this.. Watanabe no Tsuna and his colleagues heard that Oni like demon lived at Rashomon. Tsuna was pushed to go there with a sign post which would be an evidence of his presence there. When he got there, actually he encountered the Oni, fought with it and cut its arm. Oni flied away as dawn arrived. Rashomon has following story which is called Ibaragi. Oni disguises himself into Tsuna’s aunt, come to his house in the mid night. As Tsuna was in purifying period after the incident, he asks her to visit tomorrow. The aunt tries to open the door with her evil emotion. Eventually he makes her into his house and shows the arm he cut off the Oni. Then she turns to Oni, grabs it’s arm and flies away again. Ibaragi is one of Yamazaki Kyokusui’s favorite piece.
