The emperor questioned him whose life is more important his or ruo wei. He was under impression that ruo wei felt unhappy in the imperial palace cos she fails to kill him or taisun The emperor gave taisun 2 options 1 marry ruo wei and leave the imperial palace and cannot have the surname zhu Or 2 retain his power and imperial status but live a LONELY life The emperor asked taisun to think carefully cannot have both wealth and girl The episode on their talk was on a preview not seen in episode 22 Another important factor seen in episode 22 Hu shan xiang asked 2nd prince for his help to recommend her as one of those to be chosen as taisun's Han wang or 2nd prince stated he likes girl who play with fire The next scene showed her aunt being summoned by the han Wang's wife and given a tight slap . Later her aunt was seen to collect her from han wang court discreetly Shan xiang when questioned by her personal maid on what happened at han wang,2nd prince 's place , the maid was warned not to bring up this matter again

Tai Sun can't make the choice he wants to make because of the political stalemate he has with the Duke of Han/2nd Prince. 'If' Tai Sun does not choose Hu Shan Xiang/Duke's pawn, then that means Tai Sun offends the Duke by snubbing his recommendation. Tai Sun and the emperor have to play nice with the Duke because he holds the most military power at the moment. The Duke added further pressure by implicitly threatening to expose Ruo Wei's identity as a rebel; this would mean Ruo Wei could never marry Tai Sun. It comes to: if you want to marry the woman you love, the price is accepting my pawn. The practical point of the Duke's manoeuvring is to use Hu Shan Xiang to spy and/or control Tai Sun. The covert reason is to exert 'soft power' over his nephew and father. It may be about the marriage on stage, but backstage, it's about the Duke going: "Your decisions are only as good as what I allow, look who holds the true reins of power." Another major pressure on Tai Sun to choose Hu Shan Xiang as consort/future queen revolved around his grandfather. At first, grandpa was all: "Go ahead! If everything falls apart, grandpa will deal with your Evil Uncle." Then later, it became: "Have a good think about your decision." Hint, hint. This is interpreted by Tai Sun as the emperor sustaining too much political pressure for his sake. His grandpa is already showing signs of ageing and ill health. With his father also ill, it likely makes him feel wretched to exhange his happiness for his male family's health. Going along with the Duke is the only way to prevent pressure on his grandpa. A tough decision. I think the irony is that Ruo Wei likely doesn't give a fig who is chosen as consort/future queen. She technically is forced into this marriage. Tang Wei has described her character as never having an actual choice in matters. It's her sister being chosen as consort/future queen, and at this point, she sure loves her sister more than Tai Sun. Romantically, she also ultimately loves Sun Bin, so whatever marriage title she gets by marrying Tai Sun is unlikely to be the end of the world for her. It's just a sad world for Tai Sun. Give the man a teddy bear for heaven's sake.
