Zhang Shuai has a good reputation in the tennis world and is a doubles grand slam winner, thats why other seasoned tennis players is defending her on her behalf. Zhang never lashed out if there is no solid reason, so on her reputation alone the Umpire should have at least give her the benefit of the doubt or offer to replay the point. Instead the Umpire, the linesmen verbally abusing and discrediting Zhang Shuai. The Umpire and linesmen are there to conduct and supervise a fair game, not for their own personal reputation and bias. If a player drops out because it thinks the game is not fair, then the Umpire have failed tremendously at its job. To be fair, Toth only erased the mark AFTER the umpire already made the review. Yes she could have been nicer and she also should have shown more sympathy to Zhang’s panic attack. But honestly, Zhang needs to toughen up or just focus on Doubles. You can’t let one bad call derail your entire game and then retire just because you feel the officials and crowd are against you. It seems strange to me in this day and age that if you do not have hawkeye at the event, why not use replays of television footage? I mean, numerous replays of that shot were being shown within seconds of it happening in real time & you can quite easily see there is an error from the umpire. 99% of people seeing the replay would call the shot in. It would solve disputes much quicker. I know it is still interpretation but it is essentially what VAR is in football and for the most part, it works.

Even Toth thought it was in because she quickly removed the ball print from the court, so why did the umpire call it out. It looked like it touched the line to me.
@majestigs Жыл бұрын
There are a few different points to keep apart from each other: - The chair umpire clearly made a mistake there. She spotted the wrong ballmark and got the call clearly wrong. Thouigh as long as she is convinced she made the correct call (which we will never know) she rightfully did not overturn her decision. The supervisor has no chance to overrule that call by herself, if the chair did tell her (what I assume did happen), that she gort the call right. Without replay or challenge opportunity the call stands (which is bad for Zhang but unfortunatelly by the rules. - Toth is not obligated to correct the ruling of the chair. If (what we dont know) she saw the ball land on the line, she could have done that (a good sportsman would do that in that case, but I have seen different many times before), but she decided not to do so...That (if she knew better) would be at least questionable but part of the game. - The wiping out of the ballmark later suggests, that she knew she got away with the wrong call, BUT that action by itself is not unsportsmanlike. The next point was already played out by that time, so there was no situation imaginable, that the ballmark would still be an issue of overruling or any further resultchanging debate. That said, Toth wiped out the mark to prevent it from distracting the chair umpire in case the next serve or any further shot from Zhang landed in the same area. Toth had every right to do that and that was not unsportsmanlike at all, that is very common among players on clay court matches. Whether she did that to provoke Zhang or only protect her own interests we dont know. - The celebration after Zhangs withdrawal on the other hand was disgusting and very poor behaviour! In my view, the chair umpire is to blame the most, cause it was such a big ballmark and she should have easily been able to correct the linejudge if she did pay attention to the rally and keep her eyes on the spot while getting down from the chair and walk over to the far sideline. If she was bias, we dont know, but that could have been the case here!?

There were no adjacent ballmarks the umpire could mix up with. Watch the video. What does that make you?
@antonvinnik426 Жыл бұрын
I am agree with you but I would like to add some points. 1. From video it is NOT clear whether the ball was in or out. Generally by trajectory it was out but as well may touch the line and the mark was mostly outside and without closer look it's hard to comment what was there. 2. Umpire has a right to make a mistake - but player has no right to argue after decision was finally made. That's against the rules and this is not sporty to your opponent as well. Zhang put herself above the rules of the game and it's her who started all this. 3. I suppose that 99% of that 99% of commentators who blame everybody but Zhang didn't play tournament tennis in their lives, where such cases happen quite frequently - but 34-old Zhang should not start all this comedy "All the world against Zhang".

Weeping in tears like a child who does not get what she wants immediatelly. Finally cowardly retireing because of one single point after she made up a hysterical scene and pointing at the crowd with her finger threatening them. Just because a presumably bad call and there was a good chance loosing first set against a player ranked 550 even without this incident. Actually she successfully derailed just herself.
