Ok but you don't realise how big of a deal this is - the new years concert in Austria is a thing where you have to reserve your seat like 5 years prior and it's _not cheap_. There's a ton of people watching and he is of the youngest to ever perform there, all of this in Austria where classical music has a relevancy and high standard. We (Austrians) count this like the ultimate goal, this is an extremely big achievement

This was in fact a concert on Chinese New Year - same venue, different date, different performers. The New Year's Concert you're talking about was conducted by Franz-Werner Möst that year (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_New_Year%27s_Concert). sm entertainment gave his mother a call and they refused at first. chenle and his mother didnt know anything about kpop and thought kpop has more upbeat dancing songs. when taeyeons song "I" was popular chenle realized that there re also melodic songs in kpop - which i think are songs that suit his singing voice more. in the end chenles father said he knew about the company and that its a trustable company so chenle and his mom gave it a try when sm contacted him again :)

Going to Korea was great for Chenle, seeing all the memories he was able to make and all the friends he made. However, if he had stayed in China, he would be one of the biggest stars there.
